To start, let us assume, as most grammatical theories do, that phonetics and phonology are two distinct modules of grammar. It is then necessary to think about how these two modules of grammar are related to one another. More concretely, discrete, abstract, and cognitive phonological symbols need to be “translated” into continuous, gradient, and physical phonetic gestures, the issue that is sometimes known as the “translation” problem. The C/D model is an explicit attempt to model this translation procedure. This characterization of the C/D model may sound trivial—well, any grammatical theory has to do it anyway, but as soon as we attempt to think about doing so explicitly by ourselves, we come to appreciate the value of the C/D model. Let me try to walk us through the conceptual aspects of the C/D model as a theory of the phonetics-phonology interface. The C/D model cares about both phonological representations and phonetic representations. To understand its value and how it came to life, it may be helpful to recall that Osamu, the creator of the C/D model, is a physicist who is interested in languages in general. In order for the vocal folds to vibrate, the air pressure below the larynx has to be higher than above it, in the oral cavity. This transglottal air pressure di f ference can be achieved through an expansion of the pharyngeal cavity, primarily by advancing the root of the tongue (Kent and M oll i 969, Svirsky, Stevens, Mathies, Manze11a, Perke11 and Wilhelms-Tricarico 1997, Proctor, Shadle and Iskarous 2010). This mechanism, in tum, can have an effect on the location and the degree of an oral constriction, making lingual articulations for voiced obstruents somewhat di f ferent from their voiceless counterparts. The exact consequences of this can vary for dif ferent places (e.g. alveolars and velars) and manners of articulation (stops and fricatives), given the additional constraints specific to di f ferent articulators or dif ferent air dynamic conditions (see Fuchs, 2005 for a review). The focus of this study is on details of supralaryngea1 realization of voicing in stops and fricatives as manifested in the contact between the tongue and the palate.","PeriodicalId":224194,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Phonetic Society of Japan","volume":"166 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-08-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122185481","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
