In the course of the investigation, a previously unsuspected fault - the Pingüino fault - with hundreds of meters of displacement was discovered. The gravimetric survey (summer, 1999) was the first phase of a geophysical assess- ment of the ground-water resources around Taos, an area of rapid population growth, and it was executed to help delineate buried structures that significantly influence ground-water flow and accumulation in the valley. Participants in the investigation learned a technique with direct relevance for lunar and planetary exploration and acquired data that were incorporated into subsurface geological and hydrological models of Taos valley.","PeriodicalId":224165,"journal":{"name":"Geology of the Taos Region","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122269323","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Servilleta basalts increase in thickness from south to north within the Taos Valley; they are absent in BOR1, present as a single thin flow in BOR3, and present as three multiple-flow sequences at BOR4, K3, RP2500, and the Airport well. The Ojo Caliente Sandstone Member varies in apparent thickness from thin or absent at BOR1 and BOR2/3 to greater than 1000 ft (300 m) at RP2500 to 340 ft (100 m) at the Airport well. The apparent thickness of the Ojo Caliente is greatest along the Rio Pueblo, suggesting deposition in a depression, possibly an ancestral Rio Hondo or Rio Pueblo drainage, during mid-to-late-Miocene time. The Ojo Caliente sand may have been derived from the west, accumulating against Chama-El Rito alluvial fans building off the eastern mountain front. Data from the drilling program are also used to identify and constrain offset on several intrabasin faults and a mountain front graben bounded on the west by the Seco Fault, across which the Servilleta Formation is offset 950 ft (290 m), and on the east by the Town Yard fault. The average subsidence rate within the graben is estimated as approximately 0.1mm/yr (0.3 ft/1000yr). Down-to-the west offset across the Town Yard Fault is > 1390 ft (420 m).","PeriodicalId":224165,"journal":{"name":"Geology of the Taos Region","volume":"2022 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114913136","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Rio Grande rift basin is complexly faulted, and these faults locally interrupt groundwater flow. West of the Rio Grande groundwater flow is deep and southeasterly toward a base level at the river. East of the Rio Grande gorge, groundwater recharge is mainly from mountain-front streams, and groundwater flows westward at shallower depths toward the river. A north-northwest-trending system of four or more distinct faults underlies the Taos Valley, extending from the Picuris Mountains to the Rio Hondo-Rio Grande intersection. Another fault system at the down-warped eastern edge of the rift basin underlies the town of Taos and the urban area along the mountain front. Many of these faults appear to compartmentalize the groundwater system. Groundwater quality is generally excellent. However, shallow wells may have septic contamination and wells along faults or mineralized areas may contain elevated levels of some chemical elements.","PeriodicalId":224165,"journal":{"name":"Geology of the Taos Region","volume":"51 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126000021","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Embudo fault, which is a transfer zone that strikes N60˚E across the north-trending Rio Grande rift, accommodates differential movement between the east-tilted San Luis Basin on the north and the west-tilted Española Basin on the south. Detailed geologic mapping along the northeastern 18 km of the Embudo fault provides evidence of late Pleistocene and possibly Holocene displacement along many discontinu- ous fault strands that are distributed over a width of several kilometers. The northeastern part of the Embudo fault has had left-oblique slip during the late Quaternary, as suggested by substantial along-strike variations in scarp heights, subhorizontal slickensides on fault planes, and reverse faulting within a right step-over. Fault-scarp heights along the northeastern part of the Embudo fault appear to correlate more with local strikes of fault strands than with age. The fault strands with northeasterly strikes exhibit prominent scarps, and strands with more westerly strikes have low scarps and subtle geomorphic expression. In comparison, the north-striking, rift-margin Sangre de Cristo fault, directly north of the Embudo fault, has prominent,","PeriodicalId":224165,"journal":{"name":"Geology of the Taos Region","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123235571","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Sangre de Cristo Mountains are largely composed of Proterozoic basement and Paleozoic sedimentary rocks. The exposure of uplifted, presumably dense, Proterozoic basement in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains should be associ- ated with gravity highs, but this is not the case. In this study, we focused on two gravity lows in northern New Mexico-southern Colorado. One is centered over the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in Colorado and northernmost New Mexico, and the other is located near Mora, New Mexico. The northern low can be attributed to Precambrian rocks being thrust over less dense Paleozoic rocks resulting in a rootless basement. In the Mora area, the low is attributed to unusually low-density Precambrian granitic rocks (the 1.68 Ga Guadalupita pluton) underlying a thick sequence of Late Paleozoic and younger sedimentary rocks.","PeriodicalId":224165,"journal":{"name":"Geology of the Taos Region","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116688569","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The estimates are based on the vertical offset of ca. 3 Ma Servilleta Basalt flows across the EFZ south- west of the Village of Pilar, and an average slip vector for that segment of the fault zone. A previous estimate of 130 m/m.y. average, east-west Quaternary (last 1.8 Ma) extension rate across the southern San Luis Basin was based on the slip rates on the Sangre de Cristo and Los Cordovas faults. If these independent estimates of average east-west extension are approximately correct, then the rate of extension across the southern basin may have increased slightly since the late Pliocene. Several other published estimates of slip on the Sangre de Cristo fault can be used to approximate average extension rates as far back as about 28 Ma. Although some of these estimates are poorly constrained, they can be used to speculate that: 1) average San Luis Basin extension rates may have increased since rift inception; and 2) average extension rates may have been greater across the southern San Luis Basin than across the central part of the basin near the Colorado border. The first speculation is difficult to evaluate, as extension rates have certainly varied through time. The second speculation is consistent with published conclusions that the cumulative amount of extension increases northward among rift basins, and that rifting has progressed northward through Neogene time.","PeriodicalId":224165,"journal":{"name":"Geology of the Taos Region","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127709966","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Detailed topographic surveys at the site show that the primary fault scarp, which is formed on late Pleistocene alluvial deposits, has about 3 m of net vertical tec- tonic displacement. A bevel in the scarp suggests that two surface ruptures occurred since deposition of the alluvial fan, each with about 1.5 m of vertical displacement. These displacements imply the occurrence of earthquakes having magnitudes in the range of M 6.8 to M 7.0. Stratigraphic relations exposed in a 30-m-long trench across the primary fault scarp show the presence of middle Pleistocene eolian and alluvial deposits faulted against late Pleistocene alluvial and colluvial deposits on the eastern, downthrown side of the fault. Stratigraphic evidence of surface-fault rupture includes scarp-derived colluvium and fissure-fill deposits that probably were deposited immediately following the surface rupture. The main fault strand consists of a primary west-dipping fault plane and secondary faulting in a 6-m-wide zone in the hanging wall. The fault zone contains multiple anastomosing strands in pervasively sheared alluvium, and probably has lower permeability than surficial deposits east of the fault, but higher permeability compared to deposits west of the fault. Calcium-carbonate cementation along fault planes in fine- and medium-grained deposits may be indicative of preferential groundwater flow downdip along the fault. Thus, major strands of the southern Sangre de Cristo fault probably provide preferential pathways for the downward flow of vadose-zone groundwater in unconsolidated near-surface deposits.","PeriodicalId":224165,"journal":{"name":"Geology of the Taos Region","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114168620","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Testing results from a series of municipal, exploratory, subdivision, and domestic wells are also used to characterize hydrologic properties (T, K, K', and S), and the effect of faults on groundwater flow in shallow and deep basin fill aquifers. The shallow unconfined to leaky-confined alluvial aquifer includes alluvial deposits and the underlying Servilleta Formation (Agua Azul aquifer facies). The deep leaky-confined to confined aquifer includes Tertiary age rift-fill sediments below the Servilleta Formation and is subdivided into the Chama-El Rito and Ojo Caliente aquifer facies. Although faults typically do not act as impermeable boundaries in the shallow alluvial aquifer and groundwater flow in the shallow aquifer is not significantly affected by faults, the Seco fault and several of the Los Cordovas faults act as impermeable boundaries in the deep basin fill aquifer. However, other Los Cordovas faults apparently do not affect groundwater flow in the deep aquifer, suggesting variable cementation along fault planes at depth. The Town Yard fault appears to be a zone of enhanced permeability in the shallow alluvial aquifer, and does not act as an impermeable boundary in the deep basin fill aquifer. Intrabasin faults such as the Seco fault that exhibit significant offset likely cause some compartmentalization of the deep aquifer system.","PeriodicalId":224165,"journal":{"name":"Geology of the Taos Region","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116760081","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
