The methanol extract of watercress ( Nasturtium officinale) inhibits 12-O -tetradecaonoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA)-induced ear edema in mice. The extract also exhibits marked antitumor activity in in vivo two-stage carcinogenesis test in mice using 7,12-dimethylbenz[ α ]anthracene as an initiator and TPA as a promoter. From the active fraction of the methanol extract, sitosterol 3-O -glucopyranoside (1) was isolated and identified. This compound was evaluated for its inhibitory effects on TPA-induced inflammation (1 µg/ear) in mice, and had a 50% inhibitory dose of 299 nmol/ear. These results indicate that watercress extracts are useful in cancer prevention.","PeriodicalId":224142,"journal":{"name":"Japanese Journal of Complementary and Alternative Medicine","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125286836","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recent studies have reported that fucoidan structure and content differ according to origins of the algae. Gagome kombu (Kjellmaniella crassifolia ) is an edible brown seaweed grown around the southern area of Hokkaido, Japan and contains an abundance of fucoidan. Sakai et al. isolated fucoidan-degrading enzymes from marine bacteria and identified the chemical structure of fucoidan from Gagome kombu (GKF) by nuclear magnetic resonance imaging and mass spectrometry analyses of enzymatic degradation products. Structural analysis revealed that GKF is a polysaccharide that is more sulfated compared with those from other brown algae and consists of three major fucoidans: F-, U-, G-fucoidan. Many studies have reported multiple biological activities of fucoidan, including anti-coagulant, antivirus, and anti-cancer activities. Methods: Forty subjects with slightly high blood pressure were assigned randomly to 2 groups (active group and placebo group). Kurozu-containing foods or the placebo was administered to the subjects daily for 12 weeks. At week 0, 6 and 12, blood samples were collected, physical measurements were taken, and the quality of life (SF-36v2) and TCM constitution were examined. Results: Significant differences on blood pressure and TCM constitution between the groups were observed at week 12. The change of QOL between the groups was observed significantly at week 6. Conclusion: These findings suggest that foods containing Kurozu have hypotensive action and improve effects on constitutional problems. In addition, it was confirmed that foods containing Kurozu are safe to ingest.","PeriodicalId":224142,"journal":{"name":"Japanese Journal of Complementary and Alternative Medicine","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125272961","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
