The paper introduces the data relation tracking method (DRTM) as a practical instance of data oriented program analysis, a key factor of our new quality assurance approach. DRTM helps comprehension of the source code by extracting the internal logic of the source code in declarative notation. An example and evaluation of DRTM for the C language is also described. The example shows that DRTM can deal in data structures and inter-data relations of any control structure. The evaluation shows that DRTM can extract the internal logic of the source code uniquely and that the extracted internal logic is useful for quality assurance of the source code.","PeriodicalId":223965,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 1995 Asia Pacific Software Engineering Conference","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-12-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125366534","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Chen and Yu (1994) have generalized some of Weyuker and Jeng's results. We extend the analysis to subdomain testing in which subdomains may overlap. We derive several results for a special case and demonstrate a technique to extend some of our results to more general cases. We believe that this technique should be very useful in further investigating the behaviour of subdomain testing.","PeriodicalId":223965,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 1995 Asia Pacific Software Engineering Conference","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-12-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116875910","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Inadequate test-cases may cause bugs to remain after testing. Overlapped test cases may increase costs. This paper proposes an event interactions graph (EIAG), representing the behavior of concurrent programs and the cooperated paths (copaths) on the EIAG as test cases. The EIAG consists of event graphs and interactions. An event graph is a control flow graph of a program unit in a concurrent program. The interactions are synchronizations, communications and waits between the program units. Copaths can be generated automatically by the algorithms which are presented in this paper. The generated copaths can detect dead (unreachable) statements and can find some communication errors in testing. However, it is necessary to validate the feasibility of the generated copaths.","PeriodicalId":223965,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 1995 Asia Pacific Software Engineering Conference","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-12-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123892312","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There have many studies supporting these processes, such as cooperative working models in meetings, tools based on those models, and specification and design methods such as structured analyses and object-oriented analysis. However, there have been no studies describing specification documents based on contents of meetings. Participants communicate verbally with each other, so we consider that an effective method should be based on verbal histories. i.e. utterances appearing in meetings. We propose a method to write specification documents considering that structures of meetings are reflected into structures of specification documents. Briefly, the assumed basis of our method is that analysts put pairs of subsequently discussed topics (we call them \"temporally adjacent topics\") into close positions in the tree structures of the specification documents. We also assess the feasibility and the effectiveness of the method through several experiments and case studies.","PeriodicalId":223965,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 1995 Asia Pacific Software Engineering Conference","volume":"58 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-12-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116500817","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The questionnaire survey was undertaken as part of a programme of research to validate unsupported claims about the paradigm. The questionnaire follows structured interviews of experienced object-oriented developers with the intention of confirming the findings on a wider practitioner group. It was posted to relevant electronic newsgroups and to members of an object-oriented (postal) mailing list. The survey received 167 responses to the electronic questionnaire and 119 responses (30% response rate) to the postal version. Results show that respondents are of the view that: (i) the object-oriented paradigm has advantages over other paradigms in terms of ease of analysis and design, programmer productivity, software reuse, and ease of maintenance; (ii) inheritance can introduce difficulties when trying to understand object-oriented software; (iii) missing design documentation and poor or inappropriate design are prevalent problems; (iv) maintenance causes degradation of object-oriented software, but less frequently than conventional software; (v) C++ has many deficiencies in comparison to other purer object-oriented languages.","PeriodicalId":223965,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 1995 Asia Pacific Software Engineering Conference","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-12-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126481290","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The methodology uses the structured specification to capture the design of an application. Unfortunately, the structured specification only has an informal definition and consequently, the correctness of a design cannot be easily verified. Prototyping has been acknowledged as an effective way to verify designs. Some attempts have been made to help generate prototypes from designs produced by the methodology. The paper contributes to this approach by providing a set of translation rules for deriving prototypes from the structured specification to Prolog programs. The proposal differs from previous attempts in two aspects. First, the specifications for which prototypes are generated are less restrictive and have richer semantics. Second, the translation rules facilitate automatic generation of a full prototype and can be easily integrated into a CASE tool supporting the structured analysis and design methodology.","PeriodicalId":223965,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 1995 Asia Pacific Software Engineering Conference","volume":"78 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-12-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124455341","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The approach utilises the modularity inherent in Object-Z specifications to simplify proofs. Properties proved for a class in isolation can be used when that class is either inherited by another class or instantiated as part of a system of interacting objects. As a result, organisations that wish to change database vendors are typically forced to rewrite their applications using the new vendor's 4GL. The anticipated cost of this redevelopment can deter an organisation from changing vendors, hence denying it the benefits that would otherwise result, e.g., the exploitation of more sophisticated database technology. If software reengineering tools existed that could reduce the rewriting effort, the large upfront cost of migrating the organisation's applications would also be reduced, which could make the shift economically feasible. The paper describes several approaches for migrating 4GL based information system applications. These approaches were developed as part of an industry sponsored research project to construct a \"real world\" software re-engineering toolset. Semantic issues identified during the preliminary design of the toolset are addressed. These issues are instantiated using examples from the project. The application of knowledge based software re-engineering technology, which facilitates the implementation of the toolset, is also described.","PeriodicalId":223965,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 1995 Asia Pacific Software Engineering Conference","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-12-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121627430","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
