Research on ICN has already produced insightful outputs, nevertheless architecture-tied designs of ICN devices cannot be easily deployed and tested in operational networks; further those designs are hard to share. In the meantime, the vision of Software-Defined Networking has grown and taken new shapes. Network players desire to change devices' behavior often and drastically, even though performances are still crucial to operate at line-speed. This has been leading to a rethink of network devices designs with the aim to offer full-programmability through high-level programming languages for packet processors, like P4. The paper presents a preliminary open source implementation of the Named-Data Networking (NDN), that is, an ICN instance, written in P4.","PeriodicalId":223733,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE NetSoft Conference and Workshops (NetSoft)","volume":"88 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-06-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115644063","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

SDN virtualization is achieved through an SDN network hypervisor that operates between the tenants' controllers and the SDN infrastructure. In order to provide performance guarantees, resource mapping is required for both data plane as well as control plane for each virtual SDN network. In the context of SDN virtualization, the control plane resources include the network hypervisor, which needs to be assigned to guarantee the performance for each tenant. In previous work, the hypervisor resource mapping is based on offline benchmarks that measure the hypervisor resource consumption against the control plane work load, e.g., control plane message rate. These offline benchmarks vary across different hypervisor implementations, e.g., single or multi-threaded, and depend on the capabilities of the deployed hardware platform, e.g., the used CPU. We propose an online approach based on machine learning techniques to determine the mapping of hypervisor resources to the control workload at runtime. This concept is already successfully applied in the context of self-configuring networks. We propose three models to estimate hypervisor resources and compare them for two SDN hypervisor implementations, namely FlowVisor and OpenVirteX. We show through measurements on a real virtualized SDN infrastructure that resource mappings can be learned on runtime with insignificant error margins.","PeriodicalId":223733,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE NetSoft Conference and Workshops (NetSoft)","volume":"110 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-06-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124738634","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There are a variety of challenges facing early adopters of Network Function Virtualizations; key among them are resource and service mapping, to support virtual network function orchestration. Service providers need efficient and effective mapping capabilities to optimally deploy network services. This paper describes TeNOR, a micro-service based network function virtualisation orchestrator capable of effectively addressing resource and network service mapping. The functional architecture and data models of TeNOR are described, as well as two proposed approaches to address the resource mapping problem. Key evaluation results are discussed and an assessment of the mapping approaches is performed in terms of the service acceptance ratio and scalability of the proposed approaches.","PeriodicalId":223733,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE NetSoft Conference and Workshops (NetSoft)","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-06-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125506814","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A TM presents the network traffic volume between origin and destination (OD) nodes. Many network management methods assumed that an accurate traffic matrix is given by other network entities, but this is not true. To apply those methods in the practice, the first priority challenge is to obtain an accurate and timely TM. Another issue to obtaining TM is to estimate the change of TM in the near future, not just reporting historical traffic measurement results. Meanwhile, Software Defined Networking (SDN) paradigm has attracted a significant interest from industry and academia as a future network architecture. Within SDN environment, many advantages exist compared to traditional IP based network. To acquire an accurate and timely TM for SDN, we propose FLAME, a TM estimation method based on Poisson Shot Noise process. FLAME is designed to take advantages of the SDN paradigm, and it reflects network traffic characterics revealed by current measurement studies. To evaluate FLAME, we compared the estimation results with a real data center network traffic trace. The evaluation results show that the estimated TM is 66.36% similar compared to the measured traffic.","PeriodicalId":223733,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE NetSoft Conference and Workshops (NetSoft)","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-06-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114958363","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, it may cause poor performance due to the large number of out-of-order packets especially when the paths have different delays. To resolve this issue, we propose to dynamically add or remove MPTCP paths with the leverage of software-defined networking (SDN). The key idea is to track the available capacity of connected paths and pick the most appropriate paths depending on varying network conditions. To show the feasibility of our approach, we create an SDN platform using Mininet over Wi-Fi networks. Our analysis shows that a faster download and improved quality of experience (QoE) in adaptive rate video streaming is possible with our dynamic MPTCP path control mechanism using SDN.","PeriodicalId":223733,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE NetSoft Conference and Workshops (NetSoft)","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-06-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115089603","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While traditional communications protocol architecture mandates layering where the lowest layers are application agnostic, research in cross layer design attests to the inefficiencies inherent in the “dumb pipes” networking paradigm. This paper investigates the potential of significant performance gains possible over the access network by departing from the traditional layered protocol approach and using a software defined protocol in conjunction with subscriber and application partitioning to provide ASO over the access network, while still maintaining a TCP/IP protocol stack to provide connectivity to the rest of the Internet. As a case study, we examine the potential performance gains provided by ASO of video streaming over the ADSL access network.","PeriodicalId":223733,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE NetSoft Conference and Workshops (NetSoft)","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-06-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130650135","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With growing expectations of network availability and performance, there is an unmet need to utilize all the available information in the network environment for optimizing network decisions. We present the preliminary design of a Software Defined Networking (SDN)-based prototype system that uses the knowledge about aerial node orbits to predict future network events, especially link outages. By proactively mitigating the effects of network events through SDN-based optimizations, our prototype system is expected to increase the availability and performance of aerial networks. We expect that our generalized approach of using SDNs for leveraging operationally available information for network optimization, is applicable in many different contexts in addition to aerial networking.","PeriodicalId":223733,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE NetSoft Conference and Workshops (NetSoft)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-06-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123978064","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The framework encompasses three main contributions: 1) the definition of multi-layered templates to identify what to supervise while taking into account the physical, logical, virtual and service layers. These templates are also finer-granular, extendable and machine-readable; 2) a self-modeling module that takes as input these templates, instantiates them and generates on-the-fly the diagnosis model that includes the physical, logical, and the virtual dependencies of networking services; 3) a service-aware root-cause analysis module that takes into account the networking services' views and their underlying network resources observations within the aforementioned layers. We also present extensive simulations to prove the fully automated, finer granularity and reduced uncertainty of the root cause of networking services failures and their underlying network resources.","PeriodicalId":223733,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE NetSoft Conference and Workshops (NetSoft)","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-06-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126477482","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the current SDN landscape is extremely fragmented, so that different open and closed source controller frameworks such as OpenDaylight [2], Ryu [3], Floodlight [4] or ONOS [5] exist. This jeopardises the gains of introducing SDN, since porting SDN applications from one platform to another is time consuming and requires high effort.
