{"title":"A Comprehensive Study on Small Indigenous Fish Species (SIS) Diversity, Availability, Conservation and Threatened Status in Sylhet Haor Basin, Bangladesh","authors":"K. A total of 140 SIS belonging to 35 families and 89 genera were collected from 43 sampling sites (10 in arats/wholesale fish markets, 16 in retail markets, and 17 in fishing locations). Cypriniformes were the most diverse group. 47%, 29%, 14% and 9% of species were moderately available, commonly available, rarely available and abundantly available, respectively. Fish belonging to Cypriniformes and Siluriformes were under moderately available and rarely available categories. Carnivorous was dominant group (49%). National and global population trends of 44% and 13% recorded fish were declining (Perciformes, Siluriformes and Clupeiformes were dominant), whereas most of the species don't have enough biological informationstatus. Out of the 140 species, 4 belong to `critically endangered`, 18 `endangered` and 14 `vulnerable` at national level, beside the order Osteoglossiformes, Sygnathiformes and Cypriniformes were more threatened. Additionally, Mastacembelus oatesiiand Rita ritawere endangered and Channa orientalisand Barilius dogarsinghiwere vulnerable at the global level. Indiscriminate fishing, poisoning, illegal fishing, siltation, pollution and invasive species posed the greatest threat to fish diversity. Climatechange is hard to predict and drastically changing fish habitats and putting SIS at risk. The introduction of new species and varieties can increase the biodiversity, what is an important factor in dealing with currentthreats in context with climatic changes. Asian pears are especially valuable due to their resistance to Erwinia amylovoraand Pear decline phytoplasma. They have also excellent tolerance to low temperatures and resistance to European pear scab (caused byVenturia pyrina). For this experiment, pomological and phenological properties were analysed on 32 pear varieties. The fruits were maturing from 9thof September (`Zao Su Li`) to the 20thof October (`Kieffer`). The heaviest fruits were determined at `Wu Jiu Xiang` (308 g on average). The lowest weight was detected at `Nanguo` (66 g on average). `Wu Jiu Xiang`, `Zao Su Li` and `Nanguo` have thin skin, which makes them ideal for direct consumption but also, they are prone to damage. `Baoshy` and `Dong guo` have thick skin, which provides good damage protection but decreases the organoleptic properties. The thick skin tends to be very bitter and overwhelms the taste of the fruit. The highest values of total soluble solids were measured in `Nanguo` (17.5%). The sourest was `Dong guo` (0.63 %) and `Nanguo` (0.54%of total titratable acids). It was carried out using key informant interviews (KII), focus group discussions (FGD), questionnaire interviews (QI) of fishermen, and secondary data collection. This water body comprised a total of 55 species, 23 families, and 10 orders, with 20% of the species being abundantly available, 40% of the species being commonly available, 29.09% of the species being moderately available, and 10.90% of the species being rarely available. Barbs and minnows (20%) were discovered to be the most common species, followed by carps (16.36%), catfishes (14.36%), and perches (14.55%). The most dominant order was the cypriniformes (38.18%), followed by the perciformes (20%) and the siluriformes (16.36%). Synbranchiformes, Clupeiformes, Osteoglossiformes, Beloniformes, Decapoda, and Anabantiformes made up the remaining seven classes. The values of the indices for Simpson dominance (C), Pielou's evenness (J'), Shannon-Weaver diversity (H), and Margalef's richness (d) in December, January, and February, respectively, were 0.91, 0.443, 3.25, 5.81, 0.94, 0.451, 3.29, and 5.95. Ethnomedicine is defined as the study or comparison of traditional medicine based on plants` bioactive compounds. Traditional herbal applications for kidney disorders are frequently used among people, as kidneys have a major role in the maintenance of homeostasis of the body, fluid, and electrolyte, and also, have a role to fulfill many metabolic functions. Iraq and Türkiye are homeland for many medicinal plants and it is crucial to understand local medicinal plant uses and their relationship with surrounding areas. To obtain valuable information, approximately 100 ethnobotanical and ethnomedicinal articles were scanned. As a result of this study, it has been found that 9 taxa are used for renal disorders in Iraq only while, 30 taxa are used for kidney diseases in Türkiye only, and 5 taxa were found to be effective against renal diseases in both countries. Furthermore, 22 plant families have been recorded in which Apiaceae (4 taxa), Compositae (8 taxa), Malvaceae (3 taxa) and Lamiaceae (3 taxa) were the most used ones. As a result, biodiversity is decreasing, and species are in danger of extinction. Long-term conservation of biodiversity depends on the conservation of biodiversity elements at different natural levels, from the lowest scales (genetic and species) to landscapes.\u0000\u0000This study aims to reveal the changes in diversity in the Denizli province of Türkiye according to the years. The change at the landscape level of the diversity in natural and semi-natural areas in Denizli province between the years of 2000 and2018 was revealed with Shannon index using the CORINE Land Use/Land Cover data. The area was divided into zones to spatially determine the change in diversity. According to the analysis, diversity has decreased in zones 1 -11, 15, and 19. These areas are also the areas where the anthropogenic effect causes change.\u0000\u0000This study, which was carried out in Denizli province, is one of the pioneering studies in the literature in terms of both the spatial determination of diversity and revealing the change over the years. With this study, it is anticipated that the biological diversity of the Denizli province will be protected and transferred to future generations. A total of 52 apricot cultivars, including 17 new perspective apricot hybrids planted in South Moravia region were analysed by flow cytometry. In addition, nuclear DNA content and ploidy level of 10 representative cultivars P. salicina, P. domestica, P. cerasifera and 22 interspecific hybrids of stone fruit were determined. Only the CV values lower than 5% were considered in analysis. All analysed apricot cultivars were diploid with average value of relative genome size 0.617 ± 0.014 pg/2C. The ploidy and DNA content of plums differ in botanical species. The obtained results were compared according to the geographical origin of cultivars and the theory about genome size evolution was considered. The values of relative genome size of original botanical species related to P. armeniaca (P. mume, P. sibirica, P. ansu) reached the lowest value in average compared with other cultivars in this study (0.603 pg/2C in average). Particularly, the internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) region of nuclear ribosomal DNA is used in molecular systematics because of availability of conserved regions with its highly repeated in number in plant genomes. Addition to the primary sequences of ITS2, also secondary structure form of the region became a valuable feature in species divergence and became to use like a morphological character. In the current study to indicate the secondary structure form of the ITS2 region as a useful tool in systematics, different taxa from 22 genera were used. The DNA samples were collected in the field studies in 2021 and sequences were aligned using ClustalW and Kimura-2 parameter to calculate the genetic distances. Phylogenetic tree was also constructed with Maximum Likelihood method with the best suitable model at MEGA X software. The secondary structure predictions of species and ΔG (Gibbs) free energy calculations, the tools of both the ITS2 database and mFOLD web server were used. The results indicated that ITS2 secondary structure estimations represented the genetic differences visibly with its helices and motifs like a morphological character.
