The approach we propose herein uses the integrating resampler proposed by M. Chiang and T. Boult (1996) as the underlying resampling algorithm. Moreover, it is a direct method, which is fundamentally different from the iterative, back-projection approaches proposed in previous work. We show that image warping techniques may have a strong impact on the quality of image resolution enhancement. By coupling the degradation model of the imaging system directly into the integrating resampler, we can better approximate the warping characteristics of real sensors, which also highly improve the quality of super-resolution images. Examples of super-resolutions are given for gray-scale images. Evaluations are made by comparing the resulting images and those using bi-linear resampling and back-projection. Results from our experiments show that integrating resampler outperforms traditional bi-linear resampling.","PeriodicalId":222106,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Third IEEE Workshop on Applications of Computer Vision. This problem is well known and has a linear solution for the 2 dimensional case, but little is known in the 3-D case. In this paper we present a polynomial time solution for the 3-D version of the Art Gallery problem. Because the problem is NP-hard, the solution presented is an approximation, and we present the bounds to our solution. Our solution uses techniques from computational geometry, graph coloring and set coverage. A complexity analysis is presented for each step and an analysis of the overall quality of the solution is given.","PeriodicalId":222106,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Third IEEE Workshop on Applications of Computer Vision. The spatio-temporal derivatives of the image function, calculated from time-varying imagery, are used to directly calculate the motion and position of the camera. For demonstration, they have implemented the system on a one-degree-of freedom thruster operating in a laboratory water tank. The estimated position information is communicated to the control system, a PID controller, in order to generate the appropriate signal to correct the thruster system's position. The performance of the vision system is demonstrated in selected experiments by comparing results with the data from an optical encoder position sensor.","PeriodicalId":222106,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Third IEEE Workshop on Applications of Computer Vision. Using three layers of ring shaped LED's with different illumination angles, three frames of images are sequentially obtained. From these images the regions of interest (soldered regions) are segmented, and their characteristic features including the average gray level and the percentage of highlights-referred to as 2D features-are extracted. Based on the backpropagation algorithm of neural networks, each solder joint is classified into one of the pre-defined types. If the output value is not in the confidence interval, the distribution of tilt angles-referred to as 3D features-is calculated, and the solder joint is classified based on the Bayes classifier. The second classifier requires more computation while providing more information and better performance. The proposed inspection system has been implemented and tested with various types of solder joints in SMDs. The experimental results have verified the validity of this scheme in terms of speed and recognition rate.","PeriodicalId":222106,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Third IEEE Workshop on Applications of Computer Vision. However, conventional object recognition methods using invariants based on point features cannot achieve efficient recognition because of large amount of combinations of point features in invariant calculation. To avoid this problem, the authors propose to use more complex features. They adopt arrow junctions and conics as complex features because man-made objects have often trihedral polyhedra (eg. parallelepiped) and circles and they make arrow junctions and conics in images, respectively. The multiple view affine invariance theory can be directly used for arrow junctions. For conics, they propose two types of invariants. They have developed an object recognition method exploiting these invariants. In addition to the recognition method with two input images, they propose a recognition method that needs only a single input image by substituting an image of a target object stored in the model library. Experimental results using 240 pair of images for 24 objects confirm the usefulness of the methods.","PeriodicalId":222106,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Third IEEE Workshop on Applications of Computer Vision. Two major procedures are used. The first is the segmentation of a single computer tomography (CT) image slice which extracts defect-like regions from the image slice, the second is correlation analysis of the defect-like regions across CT image slices. The segmentation algorithm for a single CT image is basically a complex form of multiple thresholding that exploits both the prior knowledge of wood structure and gray value characteristics of the image. The defect-like region extraction algorithm first locates the pith, groups the pixels in the segmented image on the basis of their connectivity and classifies each region as either a defect-like region or a defect-free region using shape, orientation and morphological features. Each defect-like region is classified as a defect or non-defect via correlation analysis across corresponding defect-like regions in neighboring CT image slices.","PeriodicalId":222106,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Third IEEE Workshop on Applications of Computer Vision. In order to accomplish this task, images should be geometrically and radiometrically corrected. We propose a new approach for perspective correction, useful when smaller images are gathered by rotating a camera with a fixed position. These images are projected onto a Gaussian sphere centered at the focal point of the camera which is later flattened on a plane tangent to the sphere. Using this procedure a field of view of up to 360/spl deg/ can be obtained on a mosaic image. We illustrate the geometric correction capability of our procedure (including more traditional gray level modification and seam elimination techniques) on outdoor scene images that partly overlap with each other.","PeriodicalId":222106,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Third IEEE Workshop on Applications of Computer Vision. In particular, a framework utilizing intelligent visual modeling, recognition, and serving capabilities for assisting the surgeon in manoeuvring the scope (camera) in laparoscopy is proposed. The proposed framework integrates top-down model guidance, bottom-up image analysis, and surgeon-in-the-loop monitoring for added patient safety. For the top-down directives, high-level models are used to represent the abdominal anatomy and to encode choreographed scope movement sequences based on the surgeon's knowledge. For the bottom-up analysis, vision algorithms are designed for image analysis, modeling, and matching in a flexible, deformable environment (the abdominal cavity). For reconciling the top-down and bottom-up activities, robot serving mechanisms are realized for executing choreographed scope movements with active vision guidance.","PeriodicalId":222106,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Third IEEE Workshop on Applications of Computer Vision. Detection is done in the presence of extraneous features such as tire marks. Suitable features are extracted from the image and warping using approximately known camera and plane parameters is performed in order to compensate ego-motion as far as possible. Residual disparity after warping is estimated using an optical flow algorithm. Features are tracked from frame to frame so as to obtain more reliable estimates of their motion. Corrections are made to motion parameters with the residual disparities using a robust method, and features having large residual disparities are signalled as obstacles. Sensitivity analysis of the procedure is also studied. A Bayesian framework is used at every stage so that the confidence in the estimates can be determined.","PeriodicalId":222106,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Third IEEE Workshop on Applications of Computer Vision.
