The phenomenon may become more and more of a concern for security and defense. This chapter provides some explanation of what the phenomenon itself is, a mode of warfare which embraces conventional capabilities, as well as irregular forces, irregular tactics, and formations, but also includes information warfare and involves both state and nonstate actors. It also outlines some of the steps which NATO and NATO member states have taken since the annexation of Crimea and considers some of the potential future hybrid threats and how they could be defended against. It is noted that in order to counter many threats of hybrid warfare a societal level response is required.","PeriodicalId":221938,"journal":{"name":"NATO and the Future of European and Asian Security","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123869344","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For the current and future alliance, the most geographically important places of uncertainty in this area are North Africa, the Middle East, and Ukraine. Due to the complex political, military, and social conditions, NATO must seek allies globally and regionally in the fight against security problems generated by new wars, failed states, and globalization. The military nature of the organization requires it to have soft power resources that enable the development of human capital resources in troubled regions, which is crucial for their stabilization.","PeriodicalId":221938,"journal":{"name":"NATO and the Future of European and Asian Security","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131403401","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The European Union currently faces problems both internally and also an unstable European neighbourhood. There are different theoretical perspectives on how Europe can and should perceive its role in the world. The chapter addresses these views, considers the relationship of the EU and NATO, and then comes to assess some of the issues the EU faces on its borders and in its neighbourhood, namely the refugee crisis, the conflict in Ukraine, and the recent conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh. It then outlines if a European military could help the EU achieve better peace than the current situation. This chapter argues that the European Union needs to adopt a military in order to better achieve its goals of liberalisation and democratisation on its borders; however, it should be a last resort. There are also considerable practical matters to address to ensure that the EU military can be effective as a stabilising and peacekeeping force and doesn't undermine the very liberal goals the EU aims to follow.","PeriodicalId":221938,"journal":{"name":"NATO and the Future of European and Asian Security","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123473030","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, as Greenland is actively seeking independence from Denmark, the future of Greenlandic defence has become crucial to understanding its independence aspirations. The threats against Denmark are very complex and are in a wider perspective the most unpredictable since the end of the Cold War. This is based not least on the aggressive behaviour of Russia, massive cyberattacks, China's economic aggressiveness, and the sustained terrorist threat against Europe and Denmark. This chapter examines the complexed international security situation in the Arctic zone. It focuses, especially, on the role of Greenland, de facto a demilitarized area in the northern hemisphere. What are the military and economic roles of Denmark, Russia, USA, Greenland, China, and further actors in the area? And what are the political, economic, military, and strategic consequences of the climate change in of the hot spots of security zones in the 2020s and in the future?","PeriodicalId":221938,"journal":{"name":"NATO and the Future of European and Asian Security","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126382156","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The symbol of this is undoubtedly the image of small, often improvised, vessels attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea. In some cases, there have even been attempts to traverse the English Channel. The issue of securitisation is one which can best be understood through the work of the Copenhagen School and particularly the work of Bary Buzan. Therefore, this chapter analyses the various legal regimes applicable to the different NATO countries whilst operating on the high seas where the application of such regimes is more questionable. Based on the analysis of relevant areas of law, it appears that the US is better situated, at least from a legal perspective, to conduct naval operations for the protection of the European southern border than the European states themselves. However, what is legally possible is only part of the consideration, as the political will is also an important consideration.","PeriodicalId":221938,"journal":{"name":"NATO and the Future of European and Asian Security","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133642654","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The key actors in global politics are trying to further develop nuclear weapons and improve their technologies. Against this background, the role and importance of the North Atlantic alliance is growing. The chapter discusses NATO's new nuclear policy and approaches to nuclear non-proliferation. The topic will discuss the risks, threats, and challenges facing NATO and the world in the field of nuclear security and the nuclear safety factor in global security amid asymmetric threats. The North Atlantic alliance was able to maintain peace and stability in the Euro-Atlantic region in the field of strategic security and stability, which, in turn, is quite active in the context of global security. The document will also discuss key aspects of NATO's nuclear policy in the modern era and the mechanisms of nuclear deterrence. The chapter will also discuss the 1987 Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty agreement canceled and New Start agreement.","PeriodicalId":221938,"journal":{"name":"NATO and the Future of European and Asian Security","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126727214","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For example, it can be taken into account the recent active geopolitical interventions by the Russian Federation and the intensive use of energy diplomacy to satisfy the political ambition of the Kremlin. First of all, it should be mentioned about the recent growth trends of energy interdependence between Russia and European partners of NATO. It is known that the European members of North Atlantic alliance consume more than 450 billion M3 of natural gas per year. At the same time, more than 60% of natural gas export of Russia in carried out on the European market. According to the data of 2018, “Gazprom” has exported 200.8 billion M3 on the European market. This chapter explores energy security as a part of NATO's mission.","PeriodicalId":221938,"journal":{"name":"NATO and the Future of European and Asian Security","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125787622","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This does not change the fact that the discourse on the possible duration of the North Atlantic alliance with the limited participation of the American partner existed in the past and will probably continue in the future. The discourse conducted by politicians, political scientists, and journalists reveals questions for Europe not only about the quality of the transatlantic agreement in the 21st century, but also about the shape of the European integration project and the political, economic, and defense condition of the old continent in general. The aim of this chapter is to look at the projects of European defense sovereignty from the perspective of the concepts, means, and political will needed to implement them. The analysis is designed to take into account the perspectives from both sides of the Atlantic.","PeriodicalId":221938,"journal":{"name":"NATO and the Future of European and Asian Security","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129205538","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
