Although developing digitised artefacts offers a rich new set of value creation and growth opportunities to organisations, to grab these opportunities encompass a wide variety of strategic risks. In this context, in academia, little attention has been focused on NPD processes, development risks and value creation in IoT. Thus, this paper offers a discussion on what development risks are found, what is new approach to NPD process, and how value for IoT is created comparing its counterpart in traditional manufacturing economy. To achieve this aim, a literature review was undertaken to examine existing value creation and NPD models, which are continuously evolving but not much improved in their application to developing digitalised artefacts. Through a case study, the risks, opportunities and activities for IoT development are further elaborated and critically discussed. Finally, along with a discussion of the strategic development challenges and opportunities, a continuous process of a new NPD model for IoT products and services is proposed.","PeriodicalId":221011,"journal":{"name":"Living in the Internet of Things (IoT 2019)","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124938635","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The project explores the transformative potential of placing IoT-enabled data driven systems at the core of design and manufacturing processes. The research focuses on the opportunity to collect data from IoT-enabled sensors embedded in products during real-time use by consumers, explores how that data might be immediately transferred into usable information to inform design, and considers what characteristics of the manufacturing environment might optimise the response to such data. The project also considers implications arising for skills development in the education sector as well as ethics in manufacturing. In this paper we provide a vision for future “Chatty Factories”.","PeriodicalId":221011,"journal":{"name":"Living in the Internet of Things (IoT 2019)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115921597","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, ordinary people who are citizens and users of these emerging technologies have rarely been involved in the processes that inform these policies, governance mechanisms and design due to the institutionalised processes that prioritise objective knowledge over subjective ones. People's subjective experiences are often discarded. This priority is likely to further widen the gap between people, technology policies and design as technologies advance towards delegated human agencies, which decreases human interfaces in technology-mediated relationships with objects, systems, services, trade and other (often) unknown third-party beneficiaries. Such a disconnection can have serious implications for policy implementation, especially when it involves human limitations. To address this disconnection, we argue that a space for people to meaningfully contribute their subjective knowledge - experienceto complex technology policies that, in turn, shape their experience and well-being needs to be constructed. To this end, our paper contributes the design and pilot implementation of a method to reconnect and involve people in IoT security policymaking and development.","PeriodicalId":221011,"journal":{"name":"Living in the Internet of Things (IoT 2019)","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116816937","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such an approach sits at the heart of this work. Here we present the outcome of an ongoing research programme based on sensor and App interventions (trial) at homes of participants who live independently but require care. The results indicate contrasting views of carers and the persons who receive care regarding (a) the uptake and utilisation of IoT, and (b) the potential impact on the quality of life and independence of both groups. In contrast to current telecare solutions that respond to “hard”- acute alerts, our research proposes the introduction of “soft” warnings, based on the continuous evaluation of the occupancy behaviour, care conditions and the home environment. In this context the results suggest that the care needs of a person can be more important determinants of occupancy behaviour than socio-demographic attributes that are typically used in residential occupancy classification. This research under the CareTeam programme, is a non-intrusive IoT approach geared to generate proactive care-awareness to help people who receive care stay independent and active for longer.","PeriodicalId":221011,"journal":{"name":"Living in the Internet of Things (IoT 2019)","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126421431","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A number of industry-academic collaborations are emphasizing on use of data to empower emerging technologies. Large scale deployments of IoT devices and sensors are making data available at an unprecedented scale. This is leading to design and development of governed data infrastructures to harness the value of socio-technological processes and maximise the economic impact. Application of cognitive technologies such as machine learning and artificial intelligence is paving way for newer ways of data-driven innovation for decision making, predictive analysis and scenario modelling. The paper describes the various building blocks of the data-innovation engine and substantiates it through an anonymised real-world use-case from the built environment. It describes the emerging data-driven innovation models in these sectors and the corresponding value created by them. Finally, it proposes an impact assessment framework to understand and evaluate data-driven innovation in an organisation.","PeriodicalId":221011,"journal":{"name":"Living in the Internet of Things (IoT 2019)","volume":"73 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114385651","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
