Nevertheless, the satisfactory and ongoing trajectory towards an effective application of Lean principles in the New Product Development Process (NPD) is currently under study as it is rather new in industry and the companies still face different challenges to successfully implement them. As a consequence, a novel Maturity Model and assessment tool called SMART has been developed as part of a Lean Transformation Toolkit (Lean T2) within the LeanPPD project funded by the European Commission (NMP-2008-214090). This Maturity Model and assessment tool has three main goals: 1) to enable companies to understand which are the main lean practices that are required to achieve a lean product development process and the four perspectives into which these practices are grouped 2) assess which are the companies' current and desired maturity levels in order to develop an action plan for continuous improvement and 3) obtain in a simple and automatic way the results of the assessment highlighting the main opportunity areas. This tool is also meant to follow the company during the Lean Product and Process roadmap, providing the firm the maturity level in each milestone. Therefore, the objective of this paper is twofold, 1) to provide first insights of the successful validation of the SMART Assessment tool in five companies in Spain and 2) to summarize the results of an exploratory study which evidences difficulties and best practices in regards to the implementation of lean practices in product development.","PeriodicalId":219998,"journal":{"name":"2012 18th International ICE Conference on Engineering, Technology and Innovation","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123826403","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Partner Search service is the module in charge of managing and improving the manufacturer's knowledge about its, even potential, supply chains. This service, therefore, has to support the manufacturer in managing information, based on capabilities and performance, about past and present partners, as well as in identifying new potential suppliers. The service is useful especially to develop effective partnerships when producing small batches, where it is necessary to have a reduced and easily manageable supply base.","PeriodicalId":219998,"journal":{"name":"2012 18th International ICE Conference on Engineering, Technology and Innovation","volume":"61 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114824046","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Instead of customizing the western world products to local markets, these companies are increasingly developing products from scratch for the local consumers. They are engaging in frugal & reverse innovations, by developing affordable products and solutions with “good enough” functionalities and minimum frills, and later on, introducing them to the developed countries. This paper focuses on how multinational corporations [MNCs] are establishing themselves in the emerging markets and their innovation strategies. The paper initially differentiates between frugal & reverse innovation and goes on to analyze the practices of a German MNC. The paper concludes that end to end localization, core value identification & a healthy portfolio mix of both kinds of innovations is necessary for success in emerging markets.","PeriodicalId":219998,"journal":{"name":"2012 18th International ICE Conference on Engineering, Technology and Innovation","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131100823","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However there are population groups for which personalization is a real need affecting their health and quality of life because of the self products do not meet their needs. FASHION-ABLE project aims at providing the European innovative and customization-concerned SMEs with the technological means that will enable the agile and ecoefficient production of personalised products in terms of health and performance, addressing the complex individualised needs of such growing market niches out of the scope of mass-produced goods. The first step of this project have been the generation of the users' needs and requirements for fashionable and personalized footwear for diabetic feet, clothing for wheelchair users and high-performing textile compression bandages. In addition, the personalization processes of each type of products already existing in the industry were analyzed and some adaptations/improvements have been advised.","PeriodicalId":219998,"journal":{"name":"2012 18th International ICE Conference on Engineering, Technology and Innovation","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130446242","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Yet they usually find ways to improve their performance. This is not the case for the non-added value activities. Its “invisibility” and strict relation with SME cultural behaviour make it difficult to develop internal action and collaborative projects to improve its performance. The proposed collaborative approach aims to establish joint projects involving several players to deal and reduce the impact of that type of activities in SMEs. Each player has a specific role and all of them benefit from the collaboration: pool of SMEs, Sectorial Centre, Consultancy Company and R&D Institution. The approach steps and its application in the Setup process are presented. The type of participation of each player is described as well as its benefits. The final projects outputs are identified and discussed.","PeriodicalId":219998,"journal":{"name":"2012 18th International ICE Conference on Engineering, Technology and Innovation","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129962731","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore new constellations of participants in the innovation process can arise. To give these new actors a common direction for the development process the leading company within a Business Ecosystem has to define requirements. In the past most research on requirements management has focused on the interaction between established companies along the supply chain. Setting up suitable requirements for new actors in the innovation process needs further research.","PeriodicalId":219998,"journal":{"name":"2012 18th International ICE Conference on Engineering, Technology and Innovation","volume":"90 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115708542","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Looking at the current UX body of knowledge, several theoretical and experimental models already exist and address various aspects of the resulting user experience when interacting with a product, such as perceived usefulness, ease of use, hedonic quality and visual attractiveness to cite just of few (Forlizzi & Ford, 2000; Morville, 2004; Mahlke, 2002; Hassenzahl et al., 2000). The resulting holistic model of UX is currently undergoing empirical experiments ly in three different use case domains appertaining to the Internet of Things (IoT) based services namely, wellbeing, environment and logistics. Previous results suggest that different aspects of experience are mostly independently perceived by the users while all significantly contribute to the intention to use a product/service. The iterative nature of the Living Lab experiential design and relevance of existing elements of UX as well as value co-creation are discussed. Finally, a view of the resulting holistic model is presented with a first set of preliminary conclusions.","PeriodicalId":219998,"journal":{"name":"2012 18th International ICE Conference on Engineering, Technology and Innovation","volume":"126 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122755854","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
