Salinity is considered to be the most important abiotic stress that limits the crop production. The current study deals with the impact of NaCl stress on growth and development of Panicum sumatrense (Little millet). The seeds were raised at different concentration of NaCl (0, 5, 10, 15, 20 mM) for 30 days. Under saline stress, morphological changes, pigments and biochemical levels determined to analyze the physiological and biochemical characteristics. In addition, there was a progressive increase in the levels of proline, glycine betaine, MDA and H2O2 activity from 0 to 20 Mm. statistically, there was a decrease in photosynthetic pigments, amino acid and starch with reduced leaf succulence under increasing salinity. Salt stress greatly influenced a significant reduction in the leaf area, fresh weight, dry weight, number of leaves and roots. From this study, little millet crops can be sustained at 5Mm salinity condition. It was concluded that these osmolytes play a key role in generating tolerance against salt stress.","PeriodicalId":219033,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Agriculture and Food Science","volume":"227 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134376430","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There is a growing interest to recognize the involvement of the endophytes in the production of the growth promoting bioactive compounds and secondary metabolites that are produced by the plants. Medicinal plants are known to produce several phytochemicals with potential biological activities. In the current study the endophytic bacterial diversity of two valuable medicinal plants Gymnema sylvestre, and Tabernamontana divaricate are studied. The study aimed at understanding the involvement of the endophytic bacterial community in growth beneficial trait of the host plant viz. IAA( Indole Acetic Acid) production, Phosphate solubilisation and their capacity to grow on Nitrogen free medium so as to assert their role in Nitrogen fixation. A total of 14 bacterial strains were isolated from both the taxa. 11 isolates from Gymnema sylvestre and 03 from Tabernamontana divaricate. The morphological and biochemical characterization of the isolates were performed. It was found that 13 out of 14 isolates were capable of producing IAA, 04 isolates were able to grow on Nitrogen free media and only one was capable of Phosphate solubilisation. The study showed that the isolated strains of endophytes have immense plant growth promoting potential which can be used for improvement of growth of crops.","PeriodicalId":219033,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Agriculture and Food Science","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129911765","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
