In this paper, we present a technique for adjusting the number of chips/bit to maximize throughput in such poor near/far power ratio environments. The technique leverages information derived from our chip discrimination approach, and also exploits the low duty cycle nature of ultra-wideband (UWB) radio. We present this simple method for detection of near pulse interference and develop it as one component for a peer-to-peer MAC layer protocol, to effect more efficient transmission rate control using only locally derived input. We demonstrate the efficacy of the technique using simulation in bursty, pulse limited environments. A pseudo-noise sequence prescaler modulates the impulses with specific modulation schemes, such as pulse position, bi-phase modulation or a combination of both. In this paper, we present a novel \"two dimensional complementary sequence\" (TDC) and its application in MC-CDMA system. Meanwhile, an algorithm to construct this sequence has been built up. The second circuit shifts the pulse in time by varying the operating point of an avalanche transistor. The multi-code signal, which is generated by spreading the desired user's M transmitting bits with M orthogonal codes, is pulse-position modulated. At the receiver, the received signal is demodulated through two stages. In the first stage, the multi-code based PPM signal is demodulated through the Bayes decision rule. Then, in the second stage, the demodulated multi-code signal is de-spreaded by using the M orthogonal spreading codes that are used in the transmitter. The BER performance and bit transmission rate (R/sub b/) of the proposed scheme is analyzed. From the viewpoint of coding, coded UWB-IR systems can be viewed as a class of serially concatenated coding, because channel encoder and pulse mapper in the UWB-IR systems plays a role of outer and inner encoder in serial concatenated coding, respectively. For serially concatenated coding, it is well known that iterative decoding between the inner and outer decoder brings additional coding gain by using a soft-in/soft-out (SISO) decoding algorithm. In this paper, we derive a SISO algorithm for pulse demapper based on a max log-maximum a posteriori probability (MAP) algorithm to make the CIDD applicable, and then we show that this CIDD strategy improves the error rate performance with a reasonable complexity from simulation results.
