In this paper we show that, despite its name, pseudo-relatives are not relatives but complement clauses. The impossibility of passivization, we defend, lies in a ban that physical direct perception verbs impose on their clausal complements. According to this ban, embedded subjects can only have disjoint reference with the matrix subject. This explains not only the behavior of these verbs with respect to passivization, but also the ban on reflexive and passive se .","PeriodicalId":218970,"journal":{"name":"CUADERNOS DE LA ALFAL","volume":"67 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135263175","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

From Grice (1975, 1981) on, the pragmatic tradition has generally accepted that the semantic properties of y are equivalent to those of its logical counterpart & , and that the additional meanings that y conveys in instances of asymmetric coordination (i.e., The lights were switched on and the singer walked onto the stage ) may be thought of as conversational implicatures (Harnish 1976, Posner 1980, Levinson 2000). Also, the classical generative works on the syntax of coordination (Zoerner 1995, Johannesen 1998) assume that y is the head of a CoordP (i.e., coordination phrase), in which the second conjoined phrase is a complement of the head, and the first is its specifier. The aim of this paper is twofold: to discuss both of these hypotheses and to shed some light on the relation between the possible readings of coordination and its syntax. From the pragmatic standpoint, and in line with the developments resulting from Relevance Theory (Sperber y Wilson 1986; Carston 1988, 1993, 2002; Blakemore y Carston 2003; Wilson y Sperber 2004), we will say that the asymmetry in coordination is not a conversational implicature obtained from the utterance, but an inferential enrichment of its explicit content. From the syntactic point of view, and in line with the works of Bjorkman (2013) and Zhang (2010), we will propose alternative structures for the CoordP, which we will argue are the input for the different interpretations.","PeriodicalId":218970,"journal":{"name":"CUADERNOS DE LA ALFAL","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135310739","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In previous investigations, two values associated with the use of the conjunction pero were distinguished: either adversative or pre-concessive (Ferrari et al. 2021, Güemes et al .2021). Our hypothesis is that, unlike the adversative uses, the pre-concessive pero constitutes a face salving mitigation device to avoid contrast, in order to counterargue. Forty utterances were analyzed based on several acoustic parameters: occurrence and duration of pauses, duration of the conjunction, speed and inflection of the first constituent. In addition, the accentual patterns of the pre-concessive utterances were identified through the Sp-ToBI labeling system. The results show that the pre-concessive constructions present certain acoustic and accentual characteristics in correlation with their pragmatic values. This type of utterances, by presenting continuative inflections, encode a meaning of incompleteness that constitutes a mitigation strategy used to avoid the pragmatic consequences of counterargumentation.","PeriodicalId":218970,"journal":{"name":"CUADERNOS DE LA ALFAL","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135263174","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
