A regular derivation of pruned transforms is also developed to generating arbitrarily pruned transforms for both, input and output arbitrary pruning. A Matlab code has been developed to test the correctness of algorithms, to evaluate their complexity, to generate their visual representation by flow charts and to automatically generate Matlab executable transform codes. It is demonstrated that these techniques allow also to easily derived fast algorithms for shifted transforms, DCT and transforms of real valued data.","PeriodicalId":218932,"journal":{"name":"3rd International Symposium on Image and Signal Processing and Analysis, 2003. They can be considered as the sets of points of one (see (I. Her, 1995)), respectively two plane(s) in Z/sup 3/. By this approach we can build up a whole family of triangular grids (the so called n-planes triangular grids). The hexagonal and triangular grids are the first two members of this family, moreover, they are duals of each other. We investigate the three-planes grid, the third member of the family, and its dual in detail. We show that for n /spl ges/ 4 on, the n-planes triangular grids are non-planar.","PeriodicalId":218932,"journal":{"name":"3rd International Symposium on Image and Signal Processing and Analysis, 2003. Specifically, we consider the problem of extracting the movement of chromosomal telomeres within the nucleus of a budding yeast cell. Our method has three components. The first is an alignment module that compensates for the movement of the biological structure under investigation. In our application, the images are aligned to the center of gravity of the nucleus which is detected by thresholding and fitted with an ellipse. The second step is a Mexican-hat filtering which we show to be optimally tailored to the detection of a Gaussian-like spot in fractal noise. The final component is a tracking algorithm that uses dynamic programming to extract the optimal (x,y,t) trajectory of a particle. We have implemented the method as a Java Plugin for the public-domain ImageJ software. We have applied it to real data and have obtained results that are as good - if not better as manual tracings. Our new algorithm reduces the analysis time of a 300 image sequence from 10 minutes, when it is done manually, to just a few seconds and offers the benefit of reproducibility.","PeriodicalId":218932,"journal":{"name":"3rd International Symposium on Image and Signal Processing and Analysis, 2003. This technique is based on using the windowing technique for designing the prototype filter so that its 3-dB cutoff frequency is located at /spl omega/=/spl pi//(2M). The motivation for this is the observation that if the prototype filter cascaded with itself is a 2Mth filter, then the resulting TMUX (in the case of an ideal channel being a pure delay) or FB system has approximately a perfect-reconstruction (PR) property. This implies that for this cascade the 6-dB cutoff point should be approximately located at /spl omega/=/spl pi//(2M), and, correspondingly, the 3-dB cutoff frequency of the prototype filter is located at this angular frequency. The main advantage of the proposed design scheme is that it significantly lowers the computational complexity when compared with other existing techniques proposed for designing critically sampled cosine-modulated TMUX or FB systems. The PR property is not achieved, but for the resulting TMUX (FB) systems, the intersymbol interference and crosstalk errors (the amplitude and alias errors) are small. Both of these errors are small enough in practical systems. Several examples are included illustrating these desired properties.","PeriodicalId":218932,"journal":{"name":"3rd International Symposium on Image and Signal Processing and Analysis, 2003. Two classes of methods are available for RN reduction or minimization - one uses state-space coordinate transformation, the other uses error feedback of state variables. In this paper, we propose a method for the joint optimization of error feedback and state-space realization. It is shown that the problem at hand can be solved in an unconstrained optimization setting. With a closed-form formula for gradient evaluation and an efficient quasi-Newton solver, the unconstrained minimization problem can be solved efficiently.","PeriodicalId":218932,"journal":{"name":"3rd International Symposium on Image and Signal Processing and Analysis, 2003. This research explores the use of question-answering (QA) to support personalized news video retrieval. Based on the user's short, imprecise natural language question, with implicit constraints on contents, context, duration and genre of expected videos, the system returns short precise news video fragments as answers. The system uses multi-modal features including visual, audio, speech-to-text, and external on-line news articles to perform the analysis. The system has been tested using 7 days of news video and has been found to be effective.","PeriodicalId":218932,"journal":{"name":"3rd International Symposium on Image and Signal Processing and Analysis, 2003. This discipline would be our starting point in this paper where we are going to study features of this system and to enumerate works done in this meaning and being connected to the image watermarking field, thereafter, we will present our developed approach based jointly on the image variance and its entropy. An assessment of this approach and a comparison between the watermarked image without mask and that using the proposed mask shows the interest of our proposition. A quantitative assessment in term of PSNR and average quadratic error will follow this assessment in order to illustrate these subjects.","PeriodicalId":218932,"journal":{"name":"3rd International Symposium on Image and Signal Processing and Analysis, 2003. The algebraic approach that has been presented in preceding communication, to analyse the question of perfect equalizability of multiuser channels is used. A new definition of identifiability for linear and nonlinear channel is given. This definition clarifies the fundamental link between the problem of observability of input-output system and the channel parameters identification. A test of that definition in terms of ranks of Jacobian matrices is provided.","PeriodicalId":218932,"journal":{"name":"3rd International Symposium on Image and Signal Processing and Analysis, 2003. It is established based on a robust variable step-size plain gradient algorithm (VSPG) and the proposed time-varying notch bandwidth technique. This technique can improve the convergence speed of the VSPG up to many times. The time-varying notch bandwidth is adjusted to be wide when the algorithm is far from the optimum. As algorithm approaches the optimum, the notch bandwidth is automatically adjusted to be narrow. In the early stage of adaptation, the proposed algorithm has high speed due to the wide bandwidth while ensuring high accuracy in the desired parameter due to the final narrow bandwidth. Extensive simulations are provided to show the performances of the novel adaptive algorithm. In addition, the coefficient bias and mean square error (MSE) are also revealed.","PeriodicalId":218932,"journal":{"name":"3rd International Symposium on Image and Signal Processing and Analysis, 2003.
