The scheme is based on recording positions of zero-crossings of the input signal added to a deterministic dither function. This information can be represented in a manner which requires only logarithmic increase of the bit rate with the oversampling factor, r. The input-bandlimited signal can be reconstructed from this information locally, and with a mean squared error which is inversely proportional to the square of the oversampling factor, MSE=O(1/r/sup 2/). Consequently the mean squared error of this scheme exhibits exponential decay in the bit rate.","PeriodicalId":218804,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings DCC 2000. We observe that MDLVQ, in the form introduced by Servetto et al. (1999), is inherently optimized for the central decoder; i.e., for zero probability of a lost description. With a nonzero probability of description loss, performance is improved by modifying the encoding rule (using nearest neighbors with respect to \"multiple description distance\") and by perturbing the lattice codebook. The perturbation maintains many symmetries and hence does not significantly affect encoding or decoding complexity. An extension to more than two descriptions with attractive decoding properties is outlined.","PeriodicalId":218804,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings DCC 2000. Its basic principle is the computation and use of the bit probabilities derived from the symbol probabilities of Huffman codes. Thus, we obtain a joint source-channel decoding algorithm which takes advantage of this a priori knowledge. Even better performances are obtained when a turbo code-like iterative decoding is carried out. Compared to separate decoding systems, the gain in signal to noise ratio varies from 0.5 up to 1 dB with an added complexity which is relatively limited.","PeriodicalId":218804,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings DCC 2000. Researchers have demonstrated the effectiveness of wavelet subband energy values as a feature for representing and classifying texture images. However, the extraction of these texture features from compressed data can be cumbersome using traditional decompress-process approaches. A method has been developed for calculating wavelet energy features directly from a compressed embedded zerotree wavelet (EZW) symbol stream. The resulting technique is efficient and requires less memory than traditional approaches. In order to simplify the detection of subbands within the compressed data stream, end-of-subband markers have been inserted during the dominant pass of the EZW coding process. After compressing the test image, the reconstruction values described in Shapiro (1993) are used to calculate the energy of each subband. Following this technique, the memory requirements are reduced since the image is no longer reconstructed prior to the energy calculations. Additionally, the potentially large reconstruction matrix is no longer traversed which also reduces the time complexity.","PeriodicalId":218804,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings DCC 2000. Wavelets intrinsically give us the capability of localized signal decomposition and analysis in space and frequency. We present the recursive merge filter (RMF) discrete wavelet transform (DWT) algorithm, that organizes intermediate coefficients with respect to both space and frequency. This allows close coupling and pipelining with the encoder, fine grained coding, and \"cheap growing\" of larger DWT from smaller ones in a constant number of filter operations. The RMF algorithm computes the DWT of an array of length N in a bottom-up fashion, by successively \"merging\" two smaller DWT (four in 2D), and applying the wavelet filter only on the \"smooth\" or DC coefficients.","PeriodicalId":218804,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings DCC 2000. Storer and Reif (1997) have studied this modification of the Lempel-Ziv scheme and shown that it provides an efficient protection against error propagation while preserving the asymptotic optimality of the code. We refine this result by providing an asymptotic expression for the average redundancy rate of this code for memoryless sources. We have established our result by exploiting a relationship between a parsing scheme of the Lempel-Ziv encoder with the k-error protocol and a generalization of the digital search tree structure, and by using analytical techniques of the analysis of algorithms. We accompany our analysis with a number of experiments that test the validity of our theoretical result and demonstrate the effects of various additional modifications of the Lempel-Ziv algorithm.","PeriodicalId":218804,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings DCC 2000. We propose a new DCT-based image coder that provides a balance in three areas: compression, progressive coding, and robustness. We design a unique form of progressive coding. The scheme is described as a three-layer, two description image coder because it provides three levels of progressive coding where the last two layers refine the image independent of each other. This is the first image (source) coder of this type. Our coding technique increases robustness to lost information when compared to traditional progressive coding methods, and it maintains progressivity. The proposed coding technique implements two levels of coefficient scaling. The goal of the first level of coefficient scaling is to obtain a coarse representation of the original DCT coefficients by using large quantization step sizes. Next, the coarse representation of each DCT block is subtracted from the original, producing a quantization error or residual, which is quantized with smaller step sizes. At this point, we have two quantized representations taken from the original DCT coefficients. To create two layers of image refinement, the residual data is divided into two descriptions such that adding either description to the coarse representation provides a significant improvement in image quality. Thus, the coding scheme creates three layers of successive refinement of image quality, where the first layer provides a coarse or base level of quality and the two following layers provide independent, full image descriptions for refinement. We show that the proposed layered image coding scheme provides good performance for practical packet erasure rates experienced in the two refinement layers.","PeriodicalId":218804,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings DCC 2000. This consists of performing repeated stages in each one of which we identify a substring of the current version of the text yielding the maximum compression, and then replace all those occurrences except one with a pair of pointers to the untouched occurrence. This is somewhat dual with respect to the bottom up vocabulary buildup scheme considered by Rubin. This simple scheme already poses some interesting algorithmic problems. In terms of performance, the method does outperform current Lempel-Ziv implementations in most of cases. Here we show that, on biological sequences, it beats all other generic compression methods and approaches the performance of methods specifically built around some peculiar regularities of DNA sequences, such as tandem repeats and palindromes, that are neither distinguished nor treated selectively here. The most interesting performances, however, are obtained in the compression of entire groups of genetic sequences forming families with similar characteristics. This is becoming a standard and useful way to group sequences in a growing number of important specialized databases. On such inputs, the approach presented here yields scores that are not only better than those of any other method, but also improve increasingly with increasing input size. This is to be attributed to a certain ability to capture distant relationships among the sequences in a family.","PeriodicalId":218804,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings DCC 2000. The suffix tree is an efficient data structure used for Ziv-Lempel coding schemes. We propose a new data structure called the k-truncated suffix tree (k-TST), which is a truncated version of the suffix tree. The original approach exploits only the interframe correlation between bits and a few simple schemes have been devised in order to use the intraframe correlation. In this paper, we present an efficient method to exploit the intraframe correlation during the channel decoding process. We estimate an a priori soft value of the bit being decoded from the bits already decoded along the trellis path. This estimate is then used together with the estimate obtained from interframe correlation in the Viterbi metric. We also introduce an adaptive estimator of bit correlation that takes into account the reliability of the bits at the decoder output. Our channel decoding algorithm is applied to the full-rate and enhanced full-rate speech codecs in the GSM system and results in a noticeable improvement of the bit error rate.","PeriodicalId":218804,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings DCC 2000.
