This mixed-methods article reports on a pilot study that explored practitioners' perceptions regarding the impact of learning holistic engagement practice (HEP) skills on their service delivery and well-being. The research inquires into the perceptions of social workers who received the training, particularly in relation to their quality of presence and the therapeutic relationship; HEP as a form of self-care and a facilitator of compassion satisfaction; the impact it has on social work practice and settings; and the facilitators and barriers to using holistic engagement. Implications from the findings focus on the need for additional research, training, organizational change, and communities of practice to facilitate changes that could promote more effective social work practice, greater levels of empathy, and compassion satisfaction.</p>","PeriodicalId":21875,"journal":{"name":"Social work","volume":"66 4","pages":"285-296"},"PeriodicalIF":2.9,"publicationDate":"2021-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"39365523","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is a new area of inquiry with limited research available. Of the few published studies, the majority focus on staff perceptions of patrons' needs and surveys of patrons experiencing homelessness about their use of public libraries. The present study is the first to examine and compare staff perception of patrons' needs, patrons' self-expressed needs, and the actual use of social work services by patrons within one library system. Comparisons are explored between actual service usage alongside the perception of patrons' needs as originally reported by both staff and patron groups. Implications for library-based social work practice are discussed.</p>","PeriodicalId":21875,"journal":{"name":"Social work","volume":"66 4","pages":"297-305"},"PeriodicalIF":2.9,"publicationDate":"2021-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"39263892","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Authors analyze Latinas' main strengths from a resilient and intersectional approach, to consider them holistically within social work interventions. Rather than focusing on Latinas' difficulties, authors point to their multiple strengths and the ability to move forward. The study took place in the province of Tarragona, Catalonia (Spain). A qualitative approach was used. Participants included Latinas living in Tarragona and social workers from the Tarragona social services. The techniques used were nine life stories and 59 semi-open questionnaires with Latinas, and 14 interviews with social workers. The authors identified a fighting attitude and an entrepreneurial and creative spirit as both individual and collective strengths, especially within Latinas' social networks. Latinas did not recognize themselves as victims, nor did they claim to assume that identity. The social workers' interventions are implemented in a weak welfare system based on a model characterized by a paternalistic and victim-based viewpoint. Adopting approaches such as intersectionality and resilience would allow for the creation of fairer policies, programs, and projects targeted for Latinas, not just in Spain, but in other countries, too.</p>","PeriodicalId":21875,"journal":{"name":"Social work","volume":"66 4","pages":"348-357"},"PeriodicalIF":2.9,"publicationDate":"2021-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"39344419","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, many doubt the ability of social workers to act as social entrepreneurs. This study examined action strategies adopted by social workers who established innovative services to address social problems. Data were collected from qualitative in-depth interviews conducted with 23 successful social work entrepreneurs. Research findings revealed seven action strategies that have the potential to promote successful social entrepreneurship in social work: (1) coalition building, (2) legislative advocacy, (3) media use, (4) legislative tools, (5) active use of social network: \"street smarts,\" (6) development of a resource infrastructure, and (7) cultural norms and traditions. It begins with an overview of the micro-mezzo-macro spectrum in the context of vocational rehabilitation services and shows that corporate culture plays a critical role in determining the employment outcomes of people with disabilities. This case study, a collaborative project of two business enterprises in Hong Kong, illustrates the benefits brought by a mezzo-level intervention for people with disabilities. Feedback collected from eight participating staff members from the two companies revealed that such collaboration can facilitate disability-friendly work environments. By promoting workplace inclusion through three main factors-attitudes, skills, and knowledge-social workers helped support the participating staff members who worked with people with disabilities. The staff participants gained a more accurate understanding of the characteristics of people with disabilities, and better workplace accommodations were provided for employees with special needs. The experiences reported by the participants in this project suggest that social workers' scope of practice should be expanded to mezzo-level interventions to target corporate culture.</p>","PeriodicalId":21875,"journal":{"name":"Social work","volume":"66 4","pages":"339-347"},"PeriodicalIF":2.9,"publicationDate":"2021-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"39260337","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
