During the handover, the management of session-related information introduces additional over-heads and delays, due to context transfer procedures; such delays may affect the QoS perceived by mobile users, making more difficult to realize seamless handover procedures. In this paper, we design a set of mechanisms (called CT-Trigger), which operate on the mobile node at different network layers and intelligently activate the context transfer in the framework of the Context Transfer Protocol. The proposed mechanisms provide methods to forecast the handoff time of the mobile node and the access router that will hand off the connection, and an actuator to start the context transfer signaling. We show that the forecasting algorithm is stable and converges both for simple and complex trajectories, typical of urban regions; moreover, it is able to effectively avoid the ping-pong effect. We also present the design of the CT-Trigger.","PeriodicalId":218095,"journal":{"name":"2005 Workshop on Techniques, Methodologies and Tools for Performance Evaluation of Complex Systems (FIRB-PERF'05)","volume":"103 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-09-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116645754","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Every flow specifies its leaky-bucket parameters and a required delay bound, and the algorithm admits a new flow if a guarantee can be given that the delay bound for every established flow is not exceeded. The algorithm is based on a formula, derived through Network Calculus, that relates the worst-case delay of a single flow to the transmission rate provisioned for the aggregate and to the leaky-bucket parameters of flows at the ingress of the network. We describe the algorithm and the employed data structures, and we evaluate its complexity.","PeriodicalId":218095,"journal":{"name":"2005 Workshop on Techniques, Methodologies and Tools for Performance Evaluation of Complex Systems (FIRB-PERF'05)","volume":"137 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-09-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127593139","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Simulation of agents in a 3D environment is a way for getting a better understanding of system behavior as well as detecting possible hazardous conditions concerning event sequencing and timing, along with their relations with spatial constraints. In this paper, a formal high-level control model based on Time Petri Nets is used to capture robot behavior and to drive animation in the virtual 3D environment. A rich set of tools has been developed to allow assembly of virtual robots, their composition into a virtual workcell and the definition of the control model itself.","PeriodicalId":218095,"journal":{"name":"2005 Workshop on Techniques, Methodologies and Tools for Performance Evaluation of Complex Systems (FIRB-PERF'05)","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-09-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127784681","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of its several extensions is called Parametric Fault Tree (PFT) and is oriented to redundant systems providing a compact (parametric) way to model replicated components or subsystems. This paper presents the PFT solution method based on a new form of Binary Decision Diagrams (BDD), called Parametric BDD (pBDD). Such method exploits the parametric form combined with the advantages of the use of BDDs. pBDDs are used for both the qualitative and the quantitative analysis of PFTs. A case of redundant system supports the introduction and the application of the new method.","PeriodicalId":218095,"journal":{"name":"2005 Workshop on Techniques, Methodologies and Tools for Performance Evaluation of Complex Systems (FIRB-PERF'05)","volume":"179 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-09-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131818443","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper we propose a possible solution to address software performance engineering that evolves through the following phases: system specification using an augmented UML notation, creation of an intermediate performance context model, generation of an equivalent stochastic Petri netmodel whose analytical solution provides the required performance measures. We describe all the steps of the proposed approach and present ArgoPerformance, a tool we have developed that provides a complete graphical environment for software performance evaluation. We present a simple case study and validate our results against those obtained by other authors through simulation.","PeriodicalId":218095,"journal":{"name":"2005 Workshop on Techniques, Methodologies and Tools for Performance Evaluation of Complex Systems (FIRB-PERF'05)","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-09-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131986019","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The software architecture is based on a layer called MAgic State Manager (MASM), which we have designed and implemented for transparently handling state related operations (i.e. checkpointing and recovery), and on an additional software layer, we propose in this paper, acting as Rollback Controller (RC) and taking care of all the other operations (e.g. event retractions) required to support optimistic synchronization. Compared to existing proposals, which only partially move synchronization related operations outside the application level code, our proposal has the advantage of completely removing the need for modules in support of optimistic synchronization at the application level, thus strongly simplifying the application level programmer job.","PeriodicalId":218095,"journal":{"name":"2005 Workshop on Techniques, Methodologies and Tools for Performance Evaluation of Complex Systems (FIRB-PERF'05)","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-09-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127160229","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These formalisms have been applied to model and analyze the performance of hardware and software systems at different levels of abstraction, and more recently at the Software Architectures level. In this paper we investigate some relationships between SPA and QN, and more specifically we compare the SPA specifications based on Æmilia and a class of QN. We propose an approach to translate a QN model into an Æmilia specification in order to take advantage of the model definition based on SPA that allows the combination of functional and performance analysis and compositional, graphical and hierarchical modeling of complex systems. This work extends and reverses a previous comparison of the two formalisms based on the mapping from Æmilia specifications to QN. The integration of these two formalisms aims to combine their main advantages as tools for system performance analysis, in order to efficiently describe and analyze both functional and performance properties of system specifications within the same integrated framework.","PeriodicalId":218095,"journal":{"name":"2005 Workshop on Techniques, Methodologies and Tools for Performance Evaluation of Complex Systems (FIRB-PERF'05)","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-09-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125143754","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The frequency and extent of changes to Web pages vary across sites and across pages within sites. These changes influence the quality of the information retrieved from the Web and to some extent the delays experienced by the users. Our study focuses on the analysis of a news Web site with the objective of modeling the dynamic behavior of its content. We identify weekly and daily patterns in the page creation and update processes and we analyze the degree of change of the content of the pages. The study shows that many new pages were created every day, whereas existing pages but front pages, were updated few times and typically to a limited extent.","PeriodicalId":218095,"journal":{"name":"2005 Workshop on Techniques, Methodologies and Tools for Performance Evaluation of Complex Systems (FIRB-PERF'05)","volume":"15 8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-09-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127822016","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using automated methods of model building is becoming of increasing interest to software developers who have neither the skills nor the time to do it manually. This is particularly relevant in pervasive computing, where the large number of software and hardware components requires models of so large a size that using traditional manual methods of model building would be error prone and time consuming. This paper deals with an automated method to build performance models of pervasive computing applications, which require the integration of multiple technologies, including software layers, hardware platforms and wired/wireless networks. The considered performance models are of extended queueing network (EQN) type. The method is based on a procedure that receives as input the UML model of the application to yield as output the complete EQN model, which can then be evaluated by use of any evaluation tool.","PeriodicalId":218095,"journal":{"name":"2005 Workshop on Techniques, Methodologies and Tools for Performance Evaluation of Complex Systems (FIRB-PERF'05)","volume":"125 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-09-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127824837","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
