Prior efforts have resulted in two separate simulation platforms 1) 4-zone MVDC SPS and 2) vBOLDPower, a non-real-time operational load modeling tool. This paper focuses on combining these two tools into a single multi-domain real-time simulation. This will allow the power system and associated controllers to interact with a realistic load model and further development of a system-relevant environment for evaluating system-level SPS controls. This paper's primary contribution is the interface design and cosimulation approach for an integrated electrical and operational load real-time simulation testbed. Demonstrations of this work are given highlighting the importance and relevance for control evaluation.","PeriodicalId":217862,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE Electric Ship Technologies Symposium (ESTS)","volume":"258 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-08-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117096687","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Device junction temperature varies as a function of converter operating conditions (e.g. load current, bus voltage) and operational parameters (e.g. switching frequency, modulation scheme), which adversely affect the device lifetime, especially for the emerging SiC devices. It is observed the device power loss is sensitive to gate drive output voltage, which can be utilized as an effective means to actively regulate the device junction temperature, and then improve the device lifetime and converter reliability. Moreover, for precise device thermal management, accurate junction temperature monitoring is essential. Therefore, this paper proposes a gate voltage-based electrothermal management using in-situ junction temperature monitoring for SiC-based converter. A Matlab/Simulink model considering an actual CREE SiC MOSFET validates the effectiveness of the proposed approach.","PeriodicalId":217862,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE Electric Ship Technologies Symposium (ESTS)","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-08-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129767448","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A unique challenge for packaging medium-voltage power modules is managing the trade-off between insulation demand and heat dissipation. The focus of this work was on developing a packaging innovation that improves the module heat dissipation and offers more flexibility to its insulation design. Two strategies were explored for the packaging of an 8-kV SiC diode rectifier module:(1) double-side cooling and (2) sintered-silver bonding. Double-side cooling was realized by using short metal posts rather than long and thin wire bonds for device interconnection, forming a low-profile package with devices sandwiched between two insulated metal substrates. Sintered-silver bonding enabled the devices to function reliably at over 250 °C. Simulations of the packaged module showed a low interconnect inductance of 2.67 nH and a 50% less heat transfer coefficient required to cool the chips. Prototypes of the module were fabricated, and preliminary electrical testing results validated the package design.","PeriodicalId":217862,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE Electric Ship Technologies Symposium (ESTS)","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-08-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126676812","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, the state-space modeling approach is used to model bipolar dc grids on ships. A ferry is used as a test case. The modeling is done for the radial and zonal architecture with similar components. This work focuses on the motivation, design choices, and initial prototyping of a 500 kHz transformer and 1.7 kV SiC switching-cells which form the core of the converter. The transformer is designed for 13.8 kVAC and utilizes electric-field-grading conductive insulation layers. Furthermore, new insulating substrate technologies and layouts are explored to meet the challenges of developing a fast switching, low inductance switching-cell. Electrical, thermal, and weight analysis for the switching-cells are explored to achieve a power loop inductance of 3.5 nH and maximum junction temperature of 175 °C. The packaging of 1.7 kV SiC MOSFET switching-cells based on these substrates is also presented. In this work, we focus on creating communication network models used to evaluate SPS models. These models are designed to capture both the behavior of SPS from both the physical and cyber perspectives. As an alternative to designing separate power electronics converters for different applications, a universal power processing unit concept known as the power electronics building block (PEBB), was proposed in the late 1990s by the Office of Naval Research (ONR) to achieve an overall improvement in system cost, efficiency, weight, and size. These universal power processing units are used to construct power electronics systems of different functions and various voltage and power ratings; thus, applying optimization techniques to achieve a compact design for PEBBs is desired. As a commonly encountered load type, the presence of a step load in the power conditioning system can result in an undesired transient response across the internal buses. For the PEBB-based system to be optimized, it is important to guarantee that the resulted design satisfies the transient response constraints of the system; this calls for the need to embed the terminal constraint requirements into the optimization process. In this paper, a hierarchical optimization method is applied in the design process of the PEBB's main power stage, which takes into account the terminal transient response constraint. Later in the paper, it is illustrated that the design spaces for the converter-level design variables are reshaped due to the presence of design constraints.","PeriodicalId":217862,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE Electric Ship Technologies Symposium (ESTS)","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-08-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114632262","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
