A new meshing scheme is introduced that will allow the sampling points of an Unstructured Transmission Line Modelling simulation to be adapted while the simulation is in progress. Two mesh adaptation methods are investigated, namely the Centroidal Voronoi Tessellation and the Optimal Delaunay Triangulation techniques. Based on these results an improved mesh adaptation using absolute field pattern, and ensuring a constant mesh topology that is critical for the UTLM simulation, has been devised. Population related IP traffic mapped to the optical DWDM layer together with leased lines form basic traffic load, which is expanded by a factor of 33 and 100 for a 10-year projection. These traffic loads are analyzed for mixed-line-rate and reach/bandwidth elastic network scenarios; the latter one is realized by optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (O-OFDM). The flexibility of choosing between circuit, packet or burst switching and electronic or optical implementation results in an improvement in both energy and data transport efficiency because the most appropriate method and less power consuming elements can be selected and used for transmission of data through the network while inactive elements are switched off or put in a low-power mode. In this paper, we propose a novel network concept that we refer to as adaptive hybrid optical switching (AHOS) and present and investigate several architectures and realization options for AHOS nodes. The corresponding control plane comprises two layers, of which one implements routing, signalling and link management functions as defined in the GMPLS standard while the other one is responsible for managing already established circuits and scheduling the transmission of packets and bursts. In this paper, we propose a distributed framework to address energy-efficient lightpath establishment problem for computational grids over the optical WDM backbone. Each backbone node maintains two thresholds to determine its sleep/wakeup cycle. A node in the sleep mode saves energy by rejecting transient traffic. Each demand is routed based on anycast routing and with the objective of minimum power consumption. Through numerical results, we show that significant energy savings are attained by the proposed framework without requiring centralized information and control. The influences of re-routing and load balancing factors on the algorithm are evaluated, with a focus on different re-routing thresholds. Results from dynamic network simulations show that re-routing strategies can lower CO2 emissions compared to the basic energy source routing scheme, and a lower re-routing threshold achieves more savings. The increased blocking probability brought by using re-routing schemes can be compensated by applying load balancing criteria. We demonstrate a reduction of three orders of magnitude in the density of fluorescent NV centres in single crystal diamond due to hydrogen plasma treatment. This reduced fluorescence extends to a depth of 80 μm below the diamond surface and provides a clean slate upon which subsequent growth and characterisation of high quality isolated NV centres is possible. The photoluminescence excitation linewidth of NV centres in a 100 nm thick layer are measured to be as low as 140 MHz at T <; 12 K, with favourable spin properties.
