It is difficult to measure the temperature due to its extremely short duration. A mathematical model considering the multiple reflections of metal powder is established to predict heat generation. The mathematical model is verified and then used to describe the influence of line energy density and powder diameter on the temperature profile of the LTW process. The results demonstrate that the temperature from experiments and simulation are consistent. Therefore, the established model is suitable to predict the heat generation of metal powder laser-absorbents in the LTW process.","PeriodicalId":21729,"journal":{"name":"Science and Technology of Welding and Joining","volume":"28 1","pages":"589 - 597"},"PeriodicalIF":3.3,"publicationDate":"2023-03-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46394601","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"材料科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Three different alloys, Haynes 188, Inconel 718, and Rene 41, were deposited, and tested for their high-temperature tensile properties, and the results compared with wrought data. The alloys were tested from ambient temperature to 1000°C in their as-deposited condition and after undergoing industry standard age-hardening and solutionising heat-treatments, to down select the best performing alloy under two different processing conditions. The mechanical strength of the alloys fell short of the maximum achievable in wrought condition. Precipitation-strengthened alloys, Inconel 718 and Rene 41 were found to have underperformed the most significantly, whereas solid-solution-strengthened Haynes 188 suffered the least due to WAAM.","PeriodicalId":21729,"journal":{"name":"Science and Technology of Welding and Joining","volume":"28 1","pages":"525 - 533"},"PeriodicalIF":3.3,"publicationDate":"2023-03-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44668674","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"材料科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As-built samples revealed the presence of a γ-matrix with precipitation of γ′, γ′′ and MC carbides. When heat treated at 750°C for 4 h, γ′′ phase precipitated increasing the hardness by 5%. In situ X-ray observations revealed that heat treating at 870°C for 1 h resulted in δ-phase precipitation. Two different second-stage temperatures were tested (1050°C and 1150°C), which dissolved the δ-phase while MC carbides formed upon cooling. The second stage at 1150°C had a higher deleterious effect than the one performed at 1050°C due to extensive grain growth.","PeriodicalId":21729,"journal":{"name":"Science and Technology of Welding and Joining","volume":"28 1","pages":"534 - 539"},"PeriodicalIF":3.3,"publicationDate":"2023-03-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43303129","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"材料科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this work, the explosive welding technique was successfully performed to join Nb/316L dissimilar metals. To reveal the phase constitution and texture distribution at the joining interface, the EBSD test was carried out. It was concluded that an irregular large wavy structure of fine crystal, sub-grains and twin structures was formed. In addition, the recrystallised structures, substructures, deformed structures and local internal stress at the joining interface were attributed to severe plastic deformation and rapid solidification of liquid metal. Furthermore, six different deformation textures and recrystallisation textures were confirmed at the joining interface due to severe plastic deformation and dynamic recrystallisation.","PeriodicalId":21729,"journal":{"name":"Science and Technology of Welding and Joining","volume":"28 1","pages":"598 - 607"},"PeriodicalIF":3.3,"publicationDate":"2023-03-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49354335","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"材料科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To show the beneficial effect of TiCps addition on microstructure and mechanical properties, a conventional 7075 aluminium alloy was also manufactured for comparison. Upon the addition of TiCps, remarkable grain refinement was achieved with a decrease in average grain size from 111.8 to 12.5 µm, and grain boundary segregation was alleviated. It was also found that many secondary phases precipitated at the grain interior in the deposit with TiCps. Owing to the refined microstructure and favourable precipitation, as-deposited 7075 aluminium alloy with TiCps showed enhanced tensile properties of ultimate tensile strengths of 346 and 355 MPa along scanning and build directions.","PeriodicalId":21729,"journal":{"name":"Science and Technology of Welding and Joining","volume":"28 1","pages":"495 - 505"},"PeriodicalIF":3.3,"publicationDate":"2023-03-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46328094","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"材料科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The results show that the grain size in the upper part of the weld is slightly larger than that in the lower part, and the whole distribution is uniform without delamination. The average tensile strength at 300°C is 148.3 MPa, the yield strength is 106.6 MPa and the elongation is 10.5%. δ-Al3CuNi and γ-Al7Cu4Ni increase the strength of grain boundary, and the strength of θ″ and θ′ are dispersed from the α-Al matrix during aging, which are the main reasons for obtaining high-temperature properties.","PeriodicalId":21729,"journal":{"name":"Science and Technology of Welding and Joining","volume":"28 1","pages":"506 - 513"},"PeriodicalIF":3.3,"publicationDate":"2023-02-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43982977","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"材料科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is identified that the presence of micro-sized Cu-rich second phases in the initial microstructure of the AA7075 is responsible for constitutional liquation in the PMZ. Although the liquation cracking can be avoided using the proper selection of filler metal, it is demonstrated that the formation of brittle Al2Cu-type intermetallic-containing eutectic structure resulting from non-equilibrium solidification of the liquated grain boundaries can induce a severe loss of ductility in the PMZ. This calls for proper strategies to minimise the grain boundary liquid film thickness to produce a more reliable fusion weld on AA7075 alloy.","PeriodicalId":21729,"journal":{"name":"Science and Technology of Welding and Joining","volume":"28 1","pages":"488 - 494"},"PeriodicalIF":3.3,"publicationDate":"2023-02-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48737288","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"材料科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The high-pressure area generated during the plunge stage was responsible for the hook formation. Threads and grooves sleeves not only enhanced the mixing effect but inhibited the hook formation by breaking up the alclad layer or promoting the downward material flow, respectively. The welds using a grooved sleeve had the lowest hook height and highest tensile-shear failure load. As the hook height decreased, the upward tendency of crack propagation was suppressed, which confined the propagation paths within the regions of higher hardness.","PeriodicalId":21729,"journal":{"name":"Science and Technology of Welding and Joining","volume":"28 1","pages":"478 - 487"},"PeriodicalIF":3.3,"publicationDate":"2023-02-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41845833","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"材料科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
