Bypass-AODV uses cross-layer MAC-notification to identify mobility-related link break, and then setup a bypass between the broken-link end nodes via an alternative node while keeps on the rest of the route. Therefore, Bypass-AODV enhances resource utilization by avoiding unnecessary error recovery cycles and consequently increases the network throughput. On the other hand, Bypass-AODV enhances route reliability; it avoids dropping packets by transmitting them over the constructed bypass. The simulation results show that when running 1-TCP connection, Bypass-AODV performs better than AODV. In particular, this behavior is rapidly changed with increasing the physical distance between the TCP connection end nodes beyond 2 hops. For example, when number of hops is equal to 6, goodput is enhanced by more than 100% compared to AODV for a 1-TCP connection and about 24% for multiple TCP connections. Further, the ratio of packet drop is reduced from 16% to 2%. Moreover, considering the hop count, the Bypass-AODV shows less sensitivity to the ongoing number of TCP connections.","PeriodicalId":217269,"journal":{"name":"International ICST Conference on Ambient Media and Systems","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-02-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121022074","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) defined by the 3rd Generation Partnership Projects (3GPP and 3GPP2) represents today a basis framework that enables the vision of providing triple play services with quality of service and mobility support across heterogeneous networks. The Fraunhofer Institute FOKUS has recently launched the FOKUS Media Interoperability Lab (MIL) that is based on the \"Open IMS Playground\" testbed. MIL is as an open environment gathering all major IMS core components, and triple play toolkit originating from own developments as well as major industry players, which can be used by academic and industrial partners for early prototyping of new triple play services, related components, protocols, and applications. This paper introduces the relevant technologies and provides an overview of the testbed architecture and the relevant multimedia services at FOKUS. The validation of this architecture is demonstrated with an implementation in the testbed.","PeriodicalId":217269,"journal":{"name":"International ICST Conference on Ambient Media and Systems","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-02-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123954909","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Co-operative systems improve their performance by sharing information with each other. One key-enabler for describing and exchanging context between intelligent vehicles, which use it for reasoning about their environment, is a common context-model. In this paper, we briefly discuss the influence of the driving context on decision-making and present an OWL-based context-model for abstract scene representation of driving scenarios. We further outline the integration of scene-descriptions with a logic-based reasoning system, based on a set of transformation rules.","PeriodicalId":217269,"journal":{"name":"International ICST Conference on Ambient Media and Systems","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-02-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124785740","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

First we apply an algorithm to segment audio content into harmonically similar and/or contrasting progressions, i.e. the stanzas. We map the stanzas found to a sequence of labels, where stanzas with a similar progression are mapped to the same label. The lyrics are analyzed as well to compute a second sequence of labels. Using dynamic programming, an optimal match is found between the two sequences, resulting in a stanza-level synchronization of the lyrics and the audio. The synchronized lyrics can be used to compute a synchronized slide show to accompany the music, where the images are retrieved using the lyrics. For an additional enrichment of the experience, colored light effects are synchronized with the music that are computed from the sets of images. The song segmentation can be done reliably, while the mapping of the audio segments and lyrics gives encouraging results.","PeriodicalId":217269,"journal":{"name":"International ICST Conference on Ambient Media and Systems","volume":"189 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-02-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131283738","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is especially true for continuous media (audio and video clips) because they are large in size and are streamed at a pre-specified rate to support a display free from disruptions and delays. Caching of clips across devices is an effective way to improve key quality of service (QoS) metrics including the fraction of requests serviced successfully when the home's connection to the outside infrastructure is lost (data availability), number of devices that may stream and display their referenced clips simultaneously (throughput), and the average delay incurred from when a user references a clip to the onset of its display (average startup latency). In this paper, we focus on home networks consisting of a handful of devices and present a novel cooperative caching technique named Cont-Coop. Cont-Coop controls the content of participating caches based on the asymmetric bandwidth of wireless connections between devices. We compare this technique with an alternative that does not control the content of cooperative caches, showing Cont-Coop is superior when the access pattern to clips is skewed. In addition, we show cooperative techniques enhance all the aforementioned QoS metrics when compared with a greedy caching technique.","PeriodicalId":217269,"journal":{"name":"International ICST Conference on Ambient Media and Systems","volume":"468 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-02-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116185659","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Because ambient systems have unpredictable requirements and are context-aware, software designs must support dynamic and sustainable change. We argue that such designs should utilize formal methods and aspect-oriented techniques, to help in supporting model validation and verification. Features of an aspect-oriented, multi-agent, architectural description language are presented as a mechanism for reasoning about cross-cutting concerns.","PeriodicalId":217269,"journal":{"name":"International ICST Conference on Ambient Media and Systems","volume":"70 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-02-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122265598","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) have great potential for UC applications and are envisioned to revolutionize them. However, before WSNs become a commodity, several issues remain to be resolved. Among the major concerns of designing WSN for UC applications is the design of efficient energy-aware routing protocols. A large number of routing protocols has been proposed in the literature. They basically differ depending on the application and network architecture used in their design. In this paper, we present clustering energy-aware routing protocols for WSNs and highlight their features.","PeriodicalId":217269,"journal":{"name":"International ICST Conference on Ambient Media and Systems","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-02-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130722784","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main purpose of this research is to develop an efficient telemetry system for measuring water pressure and temperature signals. The system reads data from two types of sensors, resistive and capacitive. Anderson circuit configuration has been used for the resistive sensor, since it offers linear like behavior. The capacitive interface is based on capacitance-frequency-voltage conversion that uses phase lock loop (PLL) to convert the frequency to voltage. A developed pressure sensors based on polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) was used to evaluate the performance of the capacitive interface. Two mechanisms have been adopted to reduce the overall power consumption. These are power scheduling and wakeup circuit for the capacitive interface. The first one is implemented fully by the micro-controller unit (MCU) in order to switch on/off all the system units. A wakeup circuit has been designed to interrupt the MCU when it is in the sleep mode and the capacitive samples are changing significantly. A platform for wireless sensor network (WSN) has been developed so that the receiver side can communicate with more than one sensor node.","PeriodicalId":217269,"journal":{"name":"International ICST Conference on Ambient Media and Systems","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-02-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131187797","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
