Tourism is one of the world’s largest industries, and hence a powerful global political and socio-economic force. Yet numerous problems associated with conventional tourism development are now greatly exacerbated by the impacts of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Longstanding calls for sustainable tourism development to address such issues still tend to promote continued growth as the basis of the tourism industry’s development, while mounting demands for “degrowth” suggest that growth is itself the fundamental problem that needs to be addressed in discussion of sustainability in tourism and elsewhere. Given that incessant growth is intrinsic to capitalist development, pursuing touristic degrowth would necessarily entail post-capitalist practices aiming to socialise the tourism industry. Recent calls to foreground socialisation in tourism development largely focus on community-level initiatives. While this is important, the bulk of the tourism industry remains translocal in scale. We therefore apply a set of principles for conceptualising post-capitalist and degrowth-oriented tourism development to a series of case studies at different levels to conceptualise potential to scale up socialisation in a post-COVID-19 world within an overarching strategy of “eroding capitalism”. © 2022 selection and editorial matter, Freya Higgins-Desbiolles, Adam Doering and Bobbie Chew Bigby.","PeriodicalId":217169,"journal":{"name":"Socialising Tourism","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127903714","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For Indigenous peoples, the importance of relationships, respect and connections has long underpinned cultural affirmation, strength and survival. This chapter investigates the role of Indigenous welcome ceremonies in not only affirming, maintaining and strengthening culture, but also in establishing respect and connections with non-Indigenous peoples. In particular, this chapter looks at the specific examples of Australian Aboriginal Welcomes to Country and Acknowledgements and Maori powhiri and haka ceremonies in Aotearoa New Zealand. The authors, an Aboriginal Australian man and a Maori man, track the history of tourism through mass consumption to “new” “socialisation”, and outline the role of welcome ceremonies in not only affirming and strengthening culture, but also in providing ways for non-Indigenous visitors to engage with, learn about and connect with Indigenous cultures and histories. Conducting welcome ceremonies at tourist attractions and destination areas can provide an empowering way for tourism hosts and visitors to learn and connect with each other, with the local people and history of the land they are visiting. © 2022 selection and editorial matter, Freya Higgins-Desbiolles, Adam Doering and Bobbie Chew Bigby.","PeriodicalId":217169,"journal":{"name":"Socialising Tourism","volume":"95 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126560079","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nevertheless, many have been quick to proclaim that the pandemic-induced crisis provides an unprecedented opportunity for reimagining and rebuilding the tourism industries in line with the principles of sustainability, resilience and social justice. While there is emerging evidence of a desire to tackle previously unsustainable processes of tourism, its logics of growth and business models, this chapter critically examines the degree to which a radical, paradigmatic transition away from growth-led, corporate-managed and resource-intensive tourism development in the aftermath of the pandemic is possible. The chapter concludes that arguments for the socialisation of tourism should commence from a rigorous analysis and critique of the tourism political economy and attendant class relations of power which influence the potential scope for the kinds of coordinated collective action required to bring about alternatives to growth-led, capitalist tourism development. © 2022 selection and editorial matter, Freya Higgins-Desbiolles, Adam Doering and Bobbie Chew Bigby.","PeriodicalId":217169,"journal":{"name":"Socialising Tourism","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114489818","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This has significant adverse effects on the social and environmental well-being of host communities. In a post-COVID-19 era, where the tourism industry has already suffered significant impacts, the adverse effects of neoliberal tourism will be compounded if there is no change to economic models of “growth”. In the age of climate change, we know that there are social and ecological limits to that growth, but responsible and sustainable tourism approaches do not go far enough to address the challenges highlighted by COVID-19 and future crises. What we need now is transformative change in a way that socialises tourism within social and ecological planetary boundaries. Buen Vivir can act as a guide for socialising tourism towards transformative change by reframing tourism objectives, with greater emphasis on the collective well-being of host communities and their natural environment. This would place the focus on the benefits to communities and their ecological and social limits rather than just on the desire of the traveller, seeking to address the growing inequalities on vulnerable host communities. Buen Vivir offers a guide to “reset tourism” in the post-COVID-19 era in the fight against the commodification of people, places and public commons for tourism development.","PeriodicalId":217169,"journal":{"name":"Socialising Tourism","volume":"185 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126030269","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
