Understanding software entails more than browsing the source code or reviewing the models in the other software artifacts. We use information visualization and visual analysis techniques to parse data sets generated from UML and Java SDK source code versions to examine patterns. Although these systems are usually implemented in an object-oriented fashion, they raise very specific, and technology-dependent, understandability and quality assessment challenges. This paper presents a visual approach for comprehending the design of distributed software systems, by using technology awareness to isolate the functionally-distinct units within the code, so that the blueprint of the system's distributed behavior can be easily extracted. Our visual approach, implemented as the Gilligan tool, uses standard GUI widgets (such as lists and editors) that developers are familiar with. Gilligan represents complex dependency data in a simplified format, appropriate for investigating reuse tasks. We present a small-scale, semi-controlled experiment that indicates that the approach permits more accurate identification of relevant structural dependencies with a lower time investment, as compared to traditional manual approaches. In this paper we describe an approach to modeling, extracting, and animating the architectural evolution of a software system. We have built a prototype tool called YARN (yet another reverse-engineering narrative) that implements our approach; YARN mines the source code changes of the target system, and generates YARN \"balls\" (animations) that a viewer can unravel (watch). The animation is based on a static layout of the modules connected by animated edges that model the changing dependencies. The edges can be weighted by the number of dependencies or the importance of the change. We integrate the Multi-Dimensional Scaling (MDS) algorithm into a visualization technique for converting raw source code into patterns that capture the software architecture. Individual components are drawn using graphical \"glyphs\" that vary their spatial position, color, and texture properties to encode each component's attribute values. The result is a display that can be used by viewers to rapidly and accurately analyze, explore, compare, and discover within the software architecture. We show how our visualization tool, known as DiffArchViz, can be used to study different architectural views representing multiple attributes of the software components. We also present a technique to visualize dynamic software architecture by examining the correspondence between multiple runtime profiles for a few storage server performance benchmarks. In a typical research context however, it is not known upfront how a tool should work. Researching the tool's design is part of the investigation process. Various designs have to be prototyped and experimented with. This paper focuses on the research process of interactive visualization tools. We present, how to improve development, so that a novel tool ca.n be tested and modified at (almost) the same time. We present the Mondrian framework, which supports on-the-fly prototyping of interactive visualizations. Many approaches have been investigated to visualize evolving systems, but most of them focus on structural data and are useful to answer questions about the structural evolution of a system. In this paper we consider an often neglected type of information, namely the one provided by bug tracking systems, which store data about the problems that various people, from developers to end users, detected and reported. Thus a distinctive understanding both from the technological and from the functional point of view is an important prerequisite for a successful implementation of such systems. The following article presents a concept of three-dimensional views as well as the development of a visualization pipeline to create dynamic views. Thus far, this type of awareness has focused only on individual developers, with information regarding individual artifacts provided in a contextualized visualization. Here, we build upon our prior work, but take a broader perspective: visualization and exploration of workspace activity and evolution on a project- wide basis. We believe this visualization helps project managers who now have a comprehensive view of all project activities, allowing them to intelligently steer development and adjust task assignments. Developers can also benefit from this high level view by understanding how their work relates with each other and to the project as a whole.
