The present study aimed to determine the biomass production and nutrient accumulation of a cover crop mix and its effects on weed suppression (biomass production), in the off-season, in a no-tillage area in the Cerrado region. The experimental design was in randomized blocks with six treatments and eight replications. Treatments comprised five cover crop mixes plus the control treatment (fallow). Mixes of cover crops, cultivated between grain harvests in a no-tillage system in the Cerrado region, efficiently reduced weed shoot biomass in the three evaluation periods, 30, 70, and 210 days after sowing. Additionally, it is concluded that the mixes 5 (Black oats, Buckwheat, Millet, Piatã grass, and Crotalaria ochroleuca) and 4 (C. spectabilis, Buckwheat, Pearl millet, and Crotalaria breviflora) are the best among those evaluated for Cerrado conditions because they produce more biomass in the offseason, due to the greater availability of nutrients to the soil, in addition to providing less biomass of weeds compared to fallow.","PeriodicalId":21558,"journal":{"name":"Revista Caatinga","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135312892","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate economical planting beds with the use of mulching and application of different irrigation water depths as a water-saving technology, and determine the irrigation water depth that promote the optimal plant development and fruit yield and quality of two cherry tomato cultivars. The experiment was conducted at the Federal Rural University of Pernambuco, Serra Talhada, PE, Brazil. A randomized block experimental design with split-plots (5×2) was used, with plots consisting of five irrigation water depths (25%, 50%, 75%, 100%, and 125% of the crop evapotranspiration - ETc) and subplots consisting of two cherry tomato cultivars (Carolina and Yubi), with four replications, totaling 40 experimental units. The development of tomato plants was evaluated through biometric measurements of stem diameter, plant height, and canopy area. Additionally, the following variables were evaluated during fruit harvest: number of fruits, mean fruit weight, fruit diameter, fruit yield, WUE, titratable acidity, pH, and soluble solids content. The economical planting beds promoted increases in WUE. Irrigation water depths lower than 100% of ETc resulted in better plant development and higher fruit yield, number of fruits, and WUE for the evaluated cherry tomato plants. The cultivar Carolina exhibited higher production performance compared to Yubi.","PeriodicalId":21558,"journal":{"name":"Revista Caatinga","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135261008","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, the use of treated seeds is an alternative for improving uniformity of plant stands at planting. Thus, the objective of this study was to assess the effects of seed treatments with biostimulant on the germination and vigor of watermelon [Citrullus lanatus (Thunb.) Matsum & Nakai] seeds of the cultivar Crimson Sweet. A completely randomized experimental design with four replications was used. The seed treatments consisted of six biostimulant (Agressive Desperta®) rates (0, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 mL kg-1). Seed germination speed index, seedling length, seedling dry weight, seedling emergence in the field, and seedling emergence speed index were evaluated. The treatment of watermelon seeds with biostimulant resulted in increases in seed germination speed and seedling length and dry weight as the biostimulant rate was increased. Seedling percentage and emergence speed increased up to the rate of 3 mL kg-1 under field conditions; however, application of higher rates resulted in phytotoxicity.","PeriodicalId":21558,"journal":{"name":"Revista Caatinga","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135314230","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This practice can increase the production of agricultural crops, including sorghum, in the Semiarid region of Brazil. In this sense, the objective of this study was to evaluate effects of different electrical conductivities of the irrigation water and H2O2 concentrations on plant growth and biomass accumulation of sorghum plants grown in the Semiarid region of Brazil. The experiment was conducted from November 2020 to January 2021 in a greenhouse at the Center for Agri-Food Sciences and Technologies of the Federal University of Campina Grande, in Pombal, Paraiba, Brazil. A randomized block experimental design was used, in a 4×4 factorial arrangement, consisted of four electrical conductivities of the irrigation water [0.30 (control), 1.50, 3.50, and 5.50 dS m-1] and four H2O2 concentrations [0 (control), 6, 12, and 18 µM], with three replications and one plant per plot, totaling 48 experimental units. Plant height, stem diameter, flag leaf length, and fresh and dry weights of leaves and stems were evaluated. The results showed that applying irrigation water with electrical conductivities higher than 1.50 dS m-1 decreases plant growth and biomass accumulation in sorghum plants. Treating sorghum seeds with H2O2 concentrations of up to 12 µM mitigates adverse effects caused by salt stress on sorghum plants subjected to the salinity levels evaluated in the present study.","PeriodicalId":21558,"journal":{"name":"Revista Caatinga","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135313184","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Among these metals, cadmium (Cd) stands out as an extremely harmful element to plant development and may even cause possible loss or suppression of vegetation in various soils worldwide. Thus, it is necessary to identify tolerant species to reestablish the ecological conditions of the environment. The present study aimed to evaluate Cd tolerance in Enterolobium contortisiliquum seedlings by assessing the effects of Cd on morphophysiological and biochemical variables and determining its potential as a phytoremediator species. The experimental design was completely randomized with four replications. Five Cd concentrations (0, 25, 50, 75, and 100 µmol L-1) were assessed. At the end of the exposure period to the treatments, we measured photosynthetic, morphological (shoot and root dry weight and root morphology), and biochemical (concentration of photosynthetic pigments, hydrogen peroxide content, membrane lipid peroxidation, and guaiacol peroxidase and superoxide dismutase activity) variables in plants. Even with the activation of antioxidant enzymes, cadmium concentrations negatively affected the photosynthetic pigments and photosynthetic rate of Enterolobium contortisiliquum, which reduced biomass production and photosystem functions, evidencing its sensitivity to excess Cd. Based on these characteristics, E. contortisiliquum seedlings can be used as a bioindicator for cadmium-contaminated areas.","PeriodicalId":21558,"journal":{"name":"Revista Caatinga","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135311743","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is believed that the use of preand post-emergent herbicides combined with preharvest application may negatively affect the quality of soybean seeds. As such, the present study aimed to assess the effect of preand post-emergent herbicides on soybean seed quality. Five field experiments were conducted during the 2018/2019 and 2019/2020 growing seasons to investigate the effects of synthetic auxins and pre-emergents, acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACCase) inhibitors, broadleaf herbicides, and s-metolachlor or clomazone on the quality of soybean seeds. Dicamba application combined with the pre-emergent herbicides imazethapyr/flumioxazin before soybean planting reduced seed vigor and germination. ACCase inhibitors in association with broadleaf herbicides before planting had no effect on seed quality. Applying s-metolachlor (up to 2,880 g of active ingredient [ai] ha-1) or clomazone (up to 1,800 g ai ha-1) was safe for seed germination, even when used after soybean emergence.","PeriodicalId":21558,"journal":{"name":"Revista Caatinga","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135312903","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The rapid increase in population and consequent need for space has resulted in anthropogenic actions, such as the segmentation of the river course within the municipality of Mossoró, RN. The objective of this study was to assess the effects of this segmentation on soils in alluvial environments. Soil collection points were defined in natural and anthropized areas in the Mossoró urban segment; soil profiles were described and collected; and samples of the soil 0-10 and 10-20 cm were collected. The samples were subjected to physical and chemical analyses to determine granulometry, density, aggregates, pH in water, available phosphorus (P), exchangeable bases, potential acidity, total organic carbon, nitrogen, and micronutrients (Cu and Zn). Maps of location and land use and cover were developed. The soil found in the natural area was classified as Neossolo Fluvico Psamitico eutrico, presenting typical physical and chemical characteristics of this soil class, with variable texture and P contents along the soil profile. The soil in the anthropized area was classified as Planossolo Haplico Carbonatico vertissolico, with Ap Horizon presenting a sandy loam texture, since it is a horizon formed due to anthropogenic activity in the environment. All horizons and profiles presented high pH. The evaluated areas formed different groups regarding soil physical and chemical attributes, with overlapping points that can be explained by anthropogenic actions, even in the environment considered natural.","PeriodicalId":21558,"journal":{"name":"Revista Caatinga","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135260997","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For the research, three accessions were selected (AC002, AC004 and AC038) from the municipalities of Barra de Santa Rosa, Monteiro and Boa Vista, respectively, which showed distinct genetic characteristics, such as morphological and agronomic characteristics, chemical composition and hydrocyanic acid content. The leaf blades showed a cuticle that covers the entire epidermis, with papillose cells in the abaxial region and in a tabular shape in the adaxial region. The cells on the abaxial side are thinner than on the adaxial side. In the phytochemical screening of maniçoba leaves, the presence of steroids, tannins, flavonoids and saponins was observed. The leaves of maniçoba (Manihot ssp.) showed absence of alkaloids in all stages and accessions evaluated. All accessions evaluated showed positivity for the presence of steroids, with superiority in accession 04 in all stages, while for the other accessions it decreased with the maturation of the plant, especially in accession 02. The presence and concentration of secondary metabolites vary between accessions and maturation stages.","PeriodicalId":21558,"journal":{"name":"Revista Caatinga","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135261001","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study aimed to evaluate the behavior of the spatial distribution of sugarcane yield averages according to the altitude and soil physical attributes along a transect in Goiana, Pernambuco, Brazil. Sugarcane yield averages, altitudes, and soil physical attributes, such as soil bulk density, total porosity, micro and macro porosity, sand (total, coarse, and fine), silt, and clay, in the 0.00-0.20 and 0.20-0.40 m soil layers were determined at 20 m intervals along the transect characterized by a toposequence of Ultisols and Spodosols. Exploratory data analysis was performed with the aid of descriptive statistics. The analysis of spatial dependence was performed using geostatistics. Pairs of semivariances were obtained using the GS+ software. The development and adjustment of the semivariograms were performed using the GEOEAS geostatistical tool. The highest contents of the finest soil particles were found in the lowest sections of the transect, in the 0.20-0.40 m soil layers. The highest amount of macropores was observed in the subsurface soil layer. The areas with the lowest amount of micropores showed the lowest average sugarcane yield, around 32.00 t.ha-1. In this respect, this study aimed to determine changes in soil fertility and resistance to root penetration caused by fertigated cropping, as compared to soil under native forest. In each area, a non-regular sampling grid was established, which consisted of 87 georeferenced points in the melon cultivated area and 8 points in the native forest area. At these points, samples were obtained at depths of 0-10, 10-20, 20-30 and 30-40 cm. The determinations performed included soil physical, chemical and mechanical attributes. Multivariate analysis techniques and geostatistical procedures were used to analyze and interpret the data. The cultivation of the Vertisol altered all the variables studied, compared to the area under native forest. Soil decompaction and increase in phosphorus content were positive effects, while organic matter decomposition and reductions in potassium, calcium, magnesium and cation exchange capacity were negative effects. Sodium content and porosity parameters were prominent factors in soil alterations.","PeriodicalId":21558,"journal":{"name":"Revista Caatinga","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135316633","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
