In order to make use of this possibility, the set values of the FACTS controllers have to be chosen appropriately. A valuable option is the application of Optimal Power Flow control, where the set values are determined such that an objective function is minimized given the model of the system. But due to the large size of power systems, it is often difficult for different reasons to include the entire system into the optimization process. In this paper, sensitivity analysis is used to determine the area on which the FACTS device has considerable influence and then only this limited area is included in the Optimal Power Flow control. If there are several devices placed in the same system, the areas assigned to these devices might overlap indicating mutual influences. Therefore, a coordination of the control entities is needed in order to avoid conflicting behavior of the devices rising the issue of Multi-Area Control. Here, the method based on Approximate Newton Directions is extended for the case of overlapping areas which are determined by sensitivity analysis.","PeriodicalId":214545,"journal":{"name":"2007 iREP Symposium - Bulk Power System Dynamics and Control - VII. The most vulnerable load buses of the system from voltage stability point of view are first identified by a modal analysis. A separate feed forward type of ANN is trained for each vulnerable load bus. For each of these ANN's, some novel inputs, comprising of the moments (obtained by multiplying the real power and reactive power contributions of each generator-vulnerable load bus pair with the electrical distance between the corresponding pair) and the reactive power margins available at the generators, are used in addition to the usually used inputs viz. the real and reactive power loads and the voltage magnitude at the vulnerable load bus. A comprehensive set of input patterns for the ANN's covering all the pertinent loading conditions that may lead to voltage instability in the system, including both the pool operation and the bilateral transactions, are generated. The target output for each input pattern is obtained by computing the distance to voltage collapse from the current system operating point using a continuation power flow type algorithm (contour program) incorporating the Q limits of the generators. The proposed method has been applied to a modified CIGRE 32 bus test system. The trained ANN's are utilized to assess the effect of the individual bilateral transactions on the distance to voltage collapse at the vulnerable load buses, so that appropriate corrective actions, like limiting of bilateral transactions or mobilizing of suitable reactive power resources to ensure voltage stability, could be taken.","PeriodicalId":214545,"journal":{"name":"2007 iREP Symposium - Bulk Power System Dynamics and Control - VII. However, faults inevitably occur in power system due to bad weather conditions, equipment damage, equipment failure, environment changes, human or animal interference and many other reasons. Since it is very important that correct information about fault location and its nature is provided as fast as possible, an automated system is proposed to track status of equipment and to calculate fault location. Calculated results are available to users through detailed graphical representation. This paper presents elements of proposed solution and describes the benefits.","PeriodicalId":214545,"journal":{"name":"2007 iREP Symposium - Bulk Power System Dynamics and Control - VII. A mathematical formalism is introduced to model protection trip problems in radial distribution networks and a procedure to monitor failures of the protection systems based on Petri Nets and a simple matrices manipulation is presented. Such procedure allows designing a tool for a centralized monitoring system of a power protection scheme. In the paper also an architecture to support the tool is proposed and two case studies are simulated on a real Italian distribution network. The proposed approach represents an interesting solution to improve reliability into distribution systems in presence of DG.","PeriodicalId":214545,"journal":{"name":"2007 iREP Symposium - Bulk Power System Dynamics and Control - VII. Synchrophasors together with modern communication technology facilitate the monitoring of the current state of the power system including the phase angles of the bus voltages at critical buses in a time-synchronized fashion. The algorithms and the controller proposed in this paper detect the fast separation of phase angles among the critical areas automatically by using the synchrophasors, and proceed to mitigate the emerging angle instability by triggering suitable control action. Briefly, the algorithms initiate tripping of critical generators in the accelerating part of the system when necessary, and also initiate load shedding in the decelerating part of the system whenever necessary. The novelty of the algorithms is in the fact that all the decisions are made in real-time purely based on the wide-area synchrophasor measurements without any knowledge of the details of relay actions that may have resulted in the angle instability phenomenon. In the paper, we also explore the application of Hamilton's action principle from classical physics to the real-time analysis of phase angles and frequencies. We postulate that the notion of action or effort used in physics is inherently suited to real-time angle instability detection and illustrate the concept with examples.","PeriodicalId":214545,"journal":{"name":"2007 iREP Symposium - Bulk Power System Dynamics and Control - VII. The evaluation considered the uncertainty in forecasted demand, likely completion of proposed transmission and generation projects, anticipated retirements, forced and scheduled outages of generation facilities, demand response programs, and the estimated impacts of operating procedures. The potential for resources expected from proposed market mechanisms designed to provide for future resource adequacy was considered. The evaluation also included the impacts of Sub-Area transmission constraints, and incorporated, to the extent possible, a detailed reliability representation for Regions bordering NPCC.","PeriodicalId":214545,"journal":{"name":"2007 iREP Symposium - Bulk Power System Dynamics and Control - VII. It results one and very demonstrative application for practicing our students, just in order to be well specialised on their hydro-electric power engineering, future field of their activity. This small river which cross the City of Bucharest, assures an agreeable aquatic and atmospheric biodiversity, being at the same time a proper place not only for our students' practice, but also for power generation aim. For the beginning, the ideas of general design are crucial. The problem is the actual careful extension of the above project just in order to cover its double ambitious aim: continue power generation with local distribution and proper place for skilful devoted students, students preparing masters or their PhD - to cope with full management program onto a real scale power lab.","PeriodicalId":214545,"journal":{"name":"2007 iREP Symposium - Bulk Power System Dynamics and Control - VII. Complementary limits have been used in the power system literature in the past for modeling the Q limit problem in power-flow equations. This paper presents a general theorem about static bifurications induced by complementary limits. A direct application of the theorem is a powerful characterization of the static bifurcations induced by Q-limits in any general large set of power-flow equations.Specifically, we prove that the Q-limit induced static bifurcation occurs whenever there is a change in the sign of the determinants of the respective power-flow Jacobian matrices when the critical generator bus changes from a PV bus to a PQ bus.The paper also discusses another application of complementary limits in power-flow equations for a system with phase shifting transformers.","PeriodicalId":214545,"journal":{"name":"2007 iREP Symposium - Bulk Power System Dynamics and Control - VII. A three-phase, physically based power system model is utilized, allowing inclusion of system asymmetries and imbalances. The proposed modeling and simulation is based on a quadratic power system model and on a numerical integration technique that assumes quadratic variation of the state within an integration step. Numerical experiments are presented for the purpose of quantifying the phenomena and identifying the major parameters affecting these phenomena.","PeriodicalId":214545,"journal":{"name":"2007 iREP Symposium - Bulk Power System Dynamics and Control - VII. The paper shows that the local control loops are strongly involved in the voltage instability phenomenon and how they modify the shape of the nose curve. The paper also analyzes how these local control loops, together with the local load characteristics, impact on the \"speed to run\" the PV curves and on the stability of their equilibrium points. A detailed analysis of the nose shapes and characteristics is preliminarily performed for each relevant control loop and different types of loads. The subsequent analyses refer to a realistic load representation and compare, in terms of nose characteristics, the results of some Italian EHV buses with a proposed equivalent dynamic model, giving evidence of the strong correlation between the two and confirming the relevant differences with the corresponding static nose curves. The focus given in the paper was mainly motivated by the new opportunities to estimate the proximity to voltage instability from fast and synchronized bus measurements, provided by a local Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU).","PeriodicalId":214545,"journal":{"name":"2007 iREP Symposium - Bulk Power System Dynamics and Control - VII.
