In Turkey, it is observed that individuals engaged in amateur music education mostly focus on instrumental training, with the violin being one of the most preferred instruments. In the process of violin education, which holds significant importance in both professional and amateur instrumental training, the identification and resolution of issues related to the right hand is crucial for a healthy progression of the education process. This study, which aims to examine various right-hand problems encountered by amateur violin students and to offer solutions, uses a mixed-methods approach that collects and analyzes data from both qualitative and quantitative sources. The related literature was examined in the qualitative portion of the research to identify the right hand-based challenges faced in amateur violin education and to expose the current state of the problem. The quantitative data utilized in the study were gathered by the researcher’s examination of the participants’ video recordings (n=10)in which they perform assigned musical exercises that require different bowing techniques. The six relevant items of the “String Performance Rating Scale” developed by Zdzinski and Barnes (2002) were used in the evaluation of the participants’ video recordings. Based on the obtained data, solution proposals were developed for resolving the issues related to the right-hand technique.","PeriodicalId":214450,"journal":{"name":"Shanlax International Journal of Education","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136247583","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the study, the activities related to the learning environments designed by the lesson study groups before and after the research lesson with a focus on problem solving are investigated. In this way, the study aims to reveal how lesson study affects pre-service mathematics teachers’ awareness of teaching problem solving. In the study, 31 pre-service mathematics teachers first received a comprehensive training on teaching problem solving in mathematics for six weeks. Then, the pre-service teachers received a one-week training on the lesson study professional development model. In the last stage, they carried out problemsolving-focused lesson study processes under the guidance of the researcher with ten lesson study groups that they formed on the basis of volunteerism. Finally, the lesson study groups shared their experiences with the other pre-service teachers participating in the study by presenting the bulletins they prepared. The data were obtained through planning and evaluation meeting minutes, observation notes of research lesson practitioners and observers, initial and final lesson plans and documents. The data obtained in the study, in which the case study design of the qualitative research approach was preferred, were subjected to descriptive analysis using Polya’s (1957) problem solving process steps framework. During the lesson study process that they experienced within the scope of the research, pre-service teachers shared their knowledge and experiences about the problem solving process and teaching with each other, as well as activities such as collaborative work in groups, designing and implementing teaching materials such as lesson plans and worksheets. According to the results obtained in the study, it was seen that the activities in the problem solving-oriented learning environments of the pre-service teachers varied thanks to the collaborative structure of the lesson study. In addition, it was seen that the pre-service teachers had the opportunity to experience the steps of the problem solving process and the instructions they could use in these steps on the students through the research lesson and then make the necessary rearrangements through evaluation meetings. Considering the opportunities offered by the collaborative and school-based structure of lesson study, it is thought that lesson study can be a functional model for pre-service teachers to use theory and practice together in courses on problem solving instruction.","PeriodicalId":214450,"journal":{"name":"Shanlax International Journal of Education","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136247576","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Case study, one of the qualitative research design, was used and the study involved 25 sophomore mathematics teaching undergraduate students from Turkey. Data were collected with a semi-structured interview form with open-ended questions and analyzed with content analysis method. As a result of the analysis of the data three themes comprising of definitions of giftedness, characteristics of gifted students including sub-themes of cognitive, affective and social traits, and mathematically gifted students including sub-themes of cognitive and affective traits were emerged. As a result of the study it was determined that the majority of the participants thought that the gifted students have exceptional performance in intelligence or creativity in a spesific area. The cognitive traits of gifted students were favorably listed as being curious or asking questions, strong verbal skills, high performance compared to the peers, fast thinking and learning, creativity and abstract thinking. The affective traits mainly included sensitivity, sense of justice, impatience, sense of humour, intense interest/concentration, diligence and patience, responsibiltiy, curiosity, perfectionism and motivation. The social characteristics of gifted were emerged as preference to communicate with adults, enhanced social relationship (resulting in leadership), rarity in society and valued by society. On the other hand, characteristics of mathematically gifted students have been classified as cognitive and affective traits according to the views of PMTs. Cognitive traits of mathematically gifted students mostly composed of quick, unusual and multiple solutions to problems, analytical thinking, proficiency in mathematics, interest in numbers at an early age, and questioning. Affective characteristics of mathematically gifted students have been found to be introversion, peer disapproval, self-confidence, responding maturely, good sense of self-expression, sense of wonderment, and willingness to learn. Researchers manage large data sets using features such as editing data, transcribating, creating codes, and searching within data. However, while the data analysis uses software in a format, the analysis of the essence of the data is done by researchers. An AI language model, ChatGPT, released by the OpenAI company, has features such as text editing, creation, and abbreviation. In this research, considering the characteristics of ChatGPT, an answer was sought to the question of whether it can be used in data analysis for qualitative research. In this research, the case study of the qualitative research method was preferred. The data of the research consists of interview texts of two participants from an unpublished study. The texts were subjected to qualitative research analysis process through ChatGPT-4. Data analysis was done in two separate ways, specifying code, category and theme and not specifying. In conclusion, it has been found that ChatGPT can create code, category and theme, cite directly from within the text, interpret data sets, and analyze the meaning at the core of the data sets. In this context, the availability of ChatGPT in data analysis in qualitative research has been discussed.","PeriodicalId":214450,"journal":{"name":"Shanlax International Journal of Education","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136247700","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was employed to examine the relationships among accountability, school climate, and teachers’ perceptions of organizational identity. The analysis was conducted using the lavaan package in R. The proposed model included direct paths from accountability and school climate to organizational identity, with school climate also being influenced by accountability. Additionally, indirect effects of accountability on organizational identity through school climate were evaluated. The findings revealed that accountability has a differential impact on organizational identity across these school levels, with the strongest direct effect observed among elementary school teachers. School climate plays a significant mediating role in the relationship between accountability and organizational identity, with middle school teachers experiencing the strongest indirect effect.","PeriodicalId":214450,"journal":{"name":"Shanlax International Journal of Education","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136248141","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
