There is, however, a lack of consensus on how these three constructs relate to one another. This study aims at testing whether satisfaction plays an important mediating role between commitment and trust, and whether satisfaction influences the three important outcomes in business relationships; namely: cooperation, coordination, and continuity. Data was collected from organizations that are part of the 500 largest companies in South Africa using computer-assisted telephone interviews. The findings support the proposed conceptual framework of the study, which show that trust and commitment are positively related to satisfaction; and that satisfaction is positively related to coordination, cooperation, and continuity. An important contribution is made by this study regarding the understanding of the nomo-logical network of quality constructs in manufacturer-supplier relationships. The results support the importance of developing trusting and committed relationships that increase satisfaction as precursors for ensuring coordination, cooperation, and continuity of business relationships.","PeriodicalId":213910,"journal":{"name":"Emerging Markets: Regional Perspective eJournal","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127327244","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Este documento pretende dar un primer paso en la respuesta a dichas deficiencias, ofreciendo una mirada global de la dinamica economica de la region. Teniendo como referencia el concepto del flujo circular y la interdependencia de los distintos sectores productivos, se exploran las caracteristicas generales de los mercados de bienes y servicios, capital y trabajo; procurando identificar el perfil de las economias del Eje Cafetero y su capacidad para competir. Para ello, ademas, se consideraran las particularidades del mercado externo y el marco institucional.The literature on the economy of Eje Cafetero is not vast and it has lacked, so far, of rigorous theoretical foundations. This paper aims to take a first step in responding to these shortcomings, providing a global view of the economic conditions of the region. Taking as reference the concept of circular flow and the interdependence of the various productive sectors, we explore the general characteristics of the markets for goods and services, capital and labor, trying to identify the profile of the Eje Cafetero economies and their competitiveness. For this, moreover, they are considered the characteristics of the foreign market and the institutional framework.","PeriodicalId":213910,"journal":{"name":"Emerging Markets: Regional Perspective eJournal","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127480072","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Kenya has experienced mixed fortunes in the vehicle export market. The growth in new vehicle export as well as the ratio of export to total sales has been very low. On the other hand, the three motor local motor vehicle assembly plants have remained highly underutilized. Although General Motors East Africa (GMEA), the leading vehicle exporter in Kenya, has allocated substantial resources over the years in the export business, little incremental value has been realized (Kenya vehicle Manufacturers Association Report, 2006). A case study of GMEA was conducted with the objective of identifying factors influencing vehicle export and evaluating effectiveness of the internationalization strategies employed. Primary and secondary data was used. Primary data was collected by use of questionnaires targeting 11 respondents drawn from GMEA senior staff and dealers. The research was conducted between November and December 2007 and 10 responses out of 11 received. Descriptive statistics (Mean, frequency and standard deviation) was used to analyze the data.The key success factors in vehicle export were identified as product quality, warranty, distribution, pricing, technical support, financing, parts support, delivery, brand name and promotion. The main challenges encountered are financial support in export markets, competition from cheap entrants, tariff, availability of market information and foreign exchange fluctuations.To address strategy gaps and improve export business, GMEA will have to strengthen or develop and implement strategies in the areas of pricing, promotion, product offering, distribution and financing. Great opportunity lies with regional integration and vehicle export remains viable.","PeriodicalId":213910,"journal":{"name":"Emerging Markets: Regional Perspective eJournal","volume":"214 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-11-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132361383","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It underscores that, while marginal liberalization of trade barriers under the Doha Development Agenda may not be forthcoming in the short- or even medium-term, the WTO has been successful in erecting a rules-based system of global governance and continues to be extremely important to the future health of the international trading system. Nevertheless, one can expect the current trend toward bilateral and regional free-trade areas (FTAs) will continue, particularly since it is easier to make progress toward 'deep integration' in a smaller group of like-minded countries than in the context of the general WTO membership.","PeriodicalId":213910,"journal":{"name":"Emerging Markets: Regional Perspective eJournal","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120979593","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper estimates a structural VECM and investigates the long-run effectiveness of trade liberalization as an FDI policy measure for Benin. The Johansen cointegration test identifies significantly positive long-run impact of trade openness on FDI inflows into Benin. Granger causality establishes unidirectional causal link from trade openness to FDI inflows. Based on the cointegration and causal analysis, greater participation in international trade by Benin will expectedly increase FDI inflows into the economy.","PeriodicalId":213910,"journal":{"name":"Emerging Markets: Regional Perspective eJournal","volume":"63 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133923060","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The jury is still out on the dynamics of price level convergence and the monetary authorities’ relative weights in the loss function. Consequently, the overall objective of this study is to examine whether or not the relative weights in the monetary policy rule under optimal policy solution differ from the posterior estimates. The study applied a dynamic stochastic general equilibrium model using Bayesian estimation techniques to identify the policy-makers’ policy preferences. The results show that the posterior estimates show evidence of sticky prices with an average duration of price contracts of around 2 - 4 quarters. In addition, the coefficient of interest rate smoothing were high at 0.62, 0.52, 0.61, 0.79 and 0.66 for The Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Nigeria and Sierra Leone, respectively, implying that the contemporaneous responsiveness of the nominal interest rates to inflation and output gap is dampened, an indication of a passive use of monetary policy as a demand management tool. Also, the impact of a change in interest rate on inflation is relatively non-persistent and short-lived. Overall, WAMZ member countries indicate preference for output stabilization.","PeriodicalId":213910,"journal":{"name":"Emerging Markets: Regional Perspective eJournal","volume":"44 4","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114112455","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It compares badly to the BRICs and to other comparable nations, while having lost its position as African leader. The African National Congress (ANC) government has emulated global best practice, but inappropriately and often for show. Additional state-owned enterprises were created to increase governmental involvement in broadband markets. Never trusting the idea of an independent non-majoritarian regulator, the ANC undermined its effectiveness, denied its legal mandate and forced commercial operators to come in person to ministers and officials for clarifications and permissions. It created legal confusion through overlapping powers of the regulator and the competition authority which was exploited by the state-owned incumbent operator, Telkom, through forum shopping and protracted litigation. Limited competition in mobile telephony easily outperformed the fixed voice network of Telkom in delivering near universal access and adoption. Similarly, mobile seems to be beating fixed broadband, because it is accessible and affordable. Local loop unbundling has been promised for years, but not yet delivered, despite commitments made to prospective fixed operators, provisions in legislation, consultations by the regulator and an official inquiry. The debate remains active in 2012, despite its technological obsolescence, diverting attention from the need for investments in optical fibre. In a unique instance of clarity, a court overturned a government decision limiting the self-provision of infrastructure by service providers, significantly opening the market. Previously, Telkom had behaved anti-competitively against value-added network service providers.The policy process has been deeply flawed, with ambitious targets adopted but never delivered. The government asserts it must be involved, despite the evidence it cannot or will not deliver and that properly regulated markets will.","PeriodicalId":213910,"journal":{"name":"Emerging Markets: Regional Perspective eJournal","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-08-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130443449","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using a panel of European commercial banks for the period 2004-2008, we find that higher levels of equity positions in industrial firms and higher proportions of industrial firms where the bank is the majority shareholder lead to higher bank activity and insolvency risk. At low levels of shareholder protection, these risk measures are reduced when equity investments are held for longer, an effect attenuated at higher levels of shareholder protection.","PeriodicalId":213910,"journal":{"name":"Emerging Markets: Regional Perspective eJournal","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-07-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124481609","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In joining the EAS, the Obama Administration espoused an approach known as divided functionality, one that would give priority to APEC, and its trade-focused Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreement economic engagement with East Asia, and the EAS for addressing political and security issues. Currently, two architectures for regional economic integration are contesting. The first embodies the US vision of a deeply institutionalized Asia-Pacific economic community, as articulated by the ongoing TPP trade negotiations. The second is represented by the Asia-only ASEAN+3 framework, a shallowly institutionalized grouping with weak enforcement compliance mechanisms. However, despite differences in the two approaches, prospects for a healthy complementarity between them—through overlapping memberships, the application of open regionalism, and the benefits of competitive liberalization among specific trade agreements—seem promising.","PeriodicalId":213910,"journal":{"name":"Emerging Markets: Regional Perspective eJournal","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-07-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128480859","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This calls for innovations to accelerate progress. Community Based Volunteerism (CBV) is one such innovation. Volunteers are people who work on behalf of others without pay or tangible gain, (Decker 2003). Volunteerism exists in all cultures and religions. It enhances solidarity and reciprocity among people. It is valued as a means of responding to human resource needs, most urgent in Africa because of limited resources (Smith, 1998b). This paper presents results of a study on the contribution of CBVs to efforts towards the MDGs in Nyakach District, Western Kenya. The study was cross sectional, descriptive and exploratory in design. The objective was to describe the contribution of volunteers in services relevant to the achievement of the MDGs in the study area, using quantitative and qualitative data collection methods. Results: Services rendered by volunteers were relevant to MDGs 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, and 7. Majority of volunteers spent 6-10 hours in a week offering voluntary services. This is equivalent to $20 per person per month, for 40 volunteers serving 5,000 people. Thus they contribute USD 9,600 per year, which is 4% budget of $170,000 the population at recommended $34 per capita per year. Majority of volunteers (70%) in study area had served for more than five years, indicating a reasonable retention rate. Conclusion: The study concluded that volunteers make substantial contribution to efforts, and budget towards the MDG relevant services, and are vital if MDGs are to be achieved. Due to the budgetary strains and human resource crisis, volunteerism presents an alternative of providing services. It should become a way of life for every citizen, as it is the only way most governments could progress towards the MDGs.","PeriodicalId":213910,"journal":{"name":"Emerging Markets: Regional Perspective eJournal","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-05-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128856432","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
