However, its use can cause significant losses in crop production. Therefore, new alternatives to enhance the tolerance of plants to salt stress are being studied, including seed priming with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Thus, this study aimed to assess the seed priming with H2O2 at different periods of exposure for enhancing the production, water status and pigments concentration of crisp lettuce grown under salt stress. The experiment was carried out under protected conditions, in a completely randomized design, with four replicates. The plants were cultivated in a floating hydroponic system, containing nutrient solution. Five treatments were tested: control (absence of H2O2 and absence of NaCl); salt control (absence of H2O2 and presence of 100 mM NaCl); 0.1 mM H2O2 (12 hours) + 100 mM NaCl; 0.1 mM H2O2 (24 hours) + 100 mM NaCl, and 0.1 mM H2O2 (36 hours) + 100 mM NaCl. In general, salinity reduced the height, production of the fresh and dry mass of the shoot, relative water content, and chlorophylls concentration of lettuce plants. However, the application of 0.1 mM H2O2 for 12 and 36 hours on the seeds, enhanced the growth, water status, and chlorophylls concentration of the plants. Seed priming with H2O2 at a 0.1 mM concentration for 12 hours can be recommended to increase tolerance of lettuce plants grown in a hydroponic system under salt stress.","PeriodicalId":21302,"journal":{"name":"Revista Brasileira de Engenharia Agrícola e Ambiental","volume":"182 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75071066","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, this study was conducted to evaluate production and water relations of coriander grown on nutrient solutions prepared with brackish waters with different cationic natures under hydroponic conditions. A randomized block experimental design with four replicates was used, in a 4 × 3 factorial arrangement. The treatments consisted of four electrical conductivities of the nutrient solution (1.6, 3.2, 4.8, and 6.4 dS m-1) which were prepared in waters with different salts (NaCl, CaCl2.2H2O, and MgCl2.6H2O). Thus, the objective was to evaluate the effect of enriching the nutrient solution with calcium nitrate in solutions prepared with saline water in the lettuce crop. A completely randomized design was used, with five treatments and four replicates. The treatments were represented by five nutrient solutions [S1 - standard nutrient solution (SNP); S2 - SNP + NaCl (3.5 dS m-1); S3 - S2 + Ca (NO3)2 (50% = 6.86 mmol L-1); S4 - S2 + Ca(NO3)2 (100% = 9.15 mmol L-1); S5 - S2 + Ca(NO3)2 (150% = 11.43 mmol L-1)] in lettuce from the curly group, cv. Elba. After preparing the nutrient solutions, the solutions had the following electrical conductivities: 1.8 (S1); 4.8 (S2); 5.4 (S3); 6.0 (S4); 6.6 (S5) dS m-1. Variables of growth, nutrition and postharvest quality of lettuce were evaluated. With the exception of stem diameter, number of total leaves, plant pH and vitamin C content, the other variables were affected by the extra addition of Ca(NO3)2 in the nutrient solutions. The lettuce cv Elba grown in coconut fiber is tolerant to the salinity of 4.8 dS m-1 (S2). In conditions where the use of saline water with 3.5 dS m-1 for the preparation of the nutrient solution is unavoidable, the use of extra doses of Ca(NO3)2 in the lettuce crop is not recommended.","PeriodicalId":21302,"journal":{"name":"Revista Brasileira de Engenharia Agrícola e Ambiental","volume":"67 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87507880","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This research aimed to evaluate lettuce production under different channel slopes and nutrient solutions in hydroponic and aquaponic systems using the nutrient film technique (NFT). A randomized block design was used, with three replicates, in a 3 × 5 split-plot scheme, with three nutrient solutions (conventional hydroponic solution and two wastewaters from the tilapia fish diets, with 15 and 18% of crude protein) and five slopes (2, 4, 6, 8 and 10%) of cultivation channels (PVC tubes). The following variables were evaluated: fresh and dry mass of shoot and roots and the chemical elements of the solutions. In the tilapia feed, the nutrient solution with 18% of protein (wastewater) provides greater production and accumulation of nutrients (N and P) in the lettuce shoot. The slope of 8% on cultivation channels provides greater production of iceberg lettuce, cultivar Lucy Brown. The different slopes and nutrient solutions studied did not influence the potassium (K) accumulation in the lettuce shoot.","PeriodicalId":21302,"journal":{"name":"Revista Brasileira de Engenharia Agrícola e Ambiental","volume":"42 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74905983","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The present study was conducted aiming to evaluate the production of bunches of Coriandrum sativum L., cultivar Tabocas, in hydroponic system plants exposed to nutrient solutions prepared with brackish water, obtained by mixing water from a community dam (electrical conductivity of 9.93 dS m-1) with rainwater. The treatments consisted of four values of electrical conductivity of the nutrient solution (1.49, 3.14, 4.87, and 6.44 dS m-1) and three seeding densities (1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 g of seeds per cell), arranged in a completely randomized experimental design in a 4 × 3 factorial scheme, with three replicates. Plant height was not affected up to the electrical conductivity of the nutrient solution of 6.44 dS m-1 with increasing seeding density. The experiment was carried out in a greenhouse of a banana plantlet production biofactory, in Cruz das Almas, Bahia, Brazil, in a randomized block design with four replications. The use of longer recirculation intervals of nutrient solution (0.75, 3.75, 5.75, 11.75, and 23.75 hours) than those commonly used for vegetables (0.25 hour) was evaluated in the present study in two seasons: winter and summer-autumn. The effect of increasing the interval of nutrient solution recirculation on plant growth was more pronounced when the temperature was higher, during the summer-autumn season. Considering the plant growth period between 15 and 20 days after transplanting, there was no effect of the recirculation frequency, showing the viability of using lower recirculation frequencies or only one recirculation per day in the first 15 days of plant growth. However, the use of shorter intervals after this period is needed because the use of intervals equal to or higher than 0.75 hour decreased plant growth in both seasons. Thus, the use of a 23.75-hour interval in the first 15 days and a 0.25-hour interval after this period allows a decrease in energy consumption, compared to the use of a 0.25-hour interval during the whole plant cycle.","PeriodicalId":21302,"journal":{"name":"Revista Brasileira de Engenharia Agrícola e Ambiental","volume":"33 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89684701","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Thus, it is extremely important to identify strategies to mitigate the effects of salt stress on plants, such as the foliar application of salicylic acid. In this context, the objective of the present study was to evaluate the effect of foliar application of salicylic acid as an attenuator of salt stress on leaf gas exchange, water relations, photosynthetic pigments, and growth of okra cv. Canindé grown in a hydroponic system. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse, in Pombal, PB, Brazil. The treatments consisted of four levels of electrical conductivity of the nutrient solution - ECns (3.0, 5.0, 7.0, and 9.0 dS m-1) and four concentrations of salicylic acid - SA (0, 1.2, 2.4, and 3.6 mM) distributed in a completely randomized design in a split-plot scheme, considering the ECns levels as the plots and SA concentrations as the subplots, with four replicates and two plants per plot. ECns from 3.0 dS m-1 inhibited the synthesis of photosynthetic pigments, leaf gas exchange, and growth of okra cv. Canindé. Foliar application of salicylic acid at concentrations of up to 3.6 mM does not alleviate the effects of salt stress on water relations, gas exchange and growth of okra. Salicylic acid at a concentration of 1.8 mM stimulates chlorophyll a and b biosynthesis in okra under ECns of 3.0 and 4.0 dS m-1, respectively.","PeriodicalId":21302,"journal":{"name":"Revista Brasileira de Engenharia Agrícola e Ambiental","volume":"16 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85167532","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Thus, the study aimed to evaluate the effect of foliar application of thiamine and niacin on growth and gas exchange activities in two lettuce cultivars in an ebb and flow hydroponic system. The completely randomized design (CRD) was used with four treatments and eight replications. The treatments were as follows: T1 - control, T2 - thiamine at a concentration of 200 mg L-1, T3 - niacin at 200 mg L-1, and T4 - thiamine and niacin combined at 100 mg L-1 of each vitamin. Each experimental plot consisted of a lettuce plant. The combined application of thiamine and niacin stood out, increasing the activity of gas exchange of lettuce plants and increasing by about 30% the fresh mass, concerning the control, for both cultivars, followed by the isolated application of niacin. For thiamine, the application alone did not result in significant changes. The vitamins affect the morphophysiology of lettuce, where the use of niacin has the potential for use in hydroponic production systems. Its combined use with thiamine increases this potential, with a synergistic effect between the compounds being verified.","PeriodicalId":21302,"journal":{"name":"Revista Brasileira de Engenharia Agrícola e Ambiental","volume":"52 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84827960","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As an alternative for these regions, brackish waters have been used, despite the severe risks of soil salinization, as well as losses in crop production and quality. Thus, the adoption of adequate technologies should mitigate or control the impacts caused by salt stress. Therefore, in the present study two experiments were conducted to evaluate the cultivation of cauliflower with brackish waters using a nutrient film technique (NFT) hydroponic system from July to October 2019 (winter-spring) and from October 2019 to January 2020 (spring-summer). Cauliflower plants were subjected to six values of ECw: 0.3 - control (without NaCl), 1.5, 2.5, 3.5, 4.5, and 5.5 dS m-1 (with NaCl), in a randomized block design with six replicates. For the leaf blade area at inflorescence harvest, reductions per dS m-1 increment in ECw of 7.22 and 6.41% were found in the winter-spring and spring-summer experiments, respectively. The quality losses of cauliflower inflorescences were more pronounced in the spring-summer experiment, varying according to the ECw used. Therefore, it is possible to grow cauliflower hydroponically under ECw of up to 5.5 dS m-1; however, in the hottest seasons these waters should be reserved and used only for the preparation of nutrient solutions or replacement of water consumed by plants.","PeriodicalId":21302,"journal":{"name":"Revista Brasileira de Engenharia Agrícola e Ambiental","volume":"54 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89154407","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
