Since the process of redemocratization in the 1980s and 1990s, police lethality and violence have been at the heart of the debate around public security. Control initiatives have emerged in the past two decades. Studies have shown the multiple features and dimensions of the problem, but effective policies to control police violence are yet to be implemented. This article presents a comparative analysis of police lethality based on polices’ experiences in the states of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. It further explores the influence of this lethality on homicide rates. It aims to identify some of the challenges that are currently posed to the exercise of this activity, based on the challenge of the Portuguese Sociological Association to its Deontological Council to review the code that regulates the scientific and professional activity of sociologists in Portugal. The empirical support for this reflection is based on the collection and documental analysis of deontological regulations in related social sciences, as well the ethical principles elaborated by the main European and international associations of sociologists. This comparative exercise allowed for the development of nine dilemmatic themes and a final suggestion. These are expected to contribute to trigger a broad debate on professional ethics among the community of sociologists.","PeriodicalId":212879,"journal":{"name":"SOCIOLOGIA ON LINE","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130602759","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper contributes to this debate by presenting and discussing the results of a quantitative analysis of the professional paths of recent PhD graduates from Universidade NOVA de Lisboa between 2010 and 2015. The professional paths of PhD holders will be compared to the ones of first and second degree graduates of the same institution. The data suggest that PhDs have an advantage in the world of work vis-à-vis other graduates, even though they are mainly enrolled in public higher education as teachers or researchers. It is also concluded that there are particularities in the professional paths between levels of studies that should be highlighted and monitored in subse-quent investigations about graduates transitions to work.","PeriodicalId":212879,"journal":{"name":"SOCIOLOGIA ON LINE","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131509458","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This article presents results from the application, at the local level, of the environmental indicator Env_WeGIx that combines several variables that translate the environment conditions of Portuguese municipalities. This composite indicator was developed based on methodological procedures used for the construction of other indicators. Preliminary results show that municipalities from Lisbon and Porto metropolitan areas are located at the bottom of the ranking due to waste production, pollutant emissions and fossil fuel consumption for transports. The municipalities located in the archipelagos, Alentejo, and Algarve regions are at the ranking top. This work’s main conclusions highlight that environmental issues have direct consequences on populations’ living conditions with more emphasis on urban territories, and that public policy design should take into account solutions for the environmental challenges of urban spaces.This study allowed for the development of an urban environmental sustainability indicator through a multi-scale analysis across the Portuguese territory.
