The families of wild birds that were captured alive and blood obtained from them include Apodidae, Hirundinidae, Columbidae, Psittacidae, Sylviidae, Muscicapidae, Ciconiidae and Accipitridae. The haemagglutination inhibition (HI) test and enzyme link immunosorbent assay (ELISA) were used to detect ND antibodies from sera of the wild birds. The overall seroprevalence of ND in wild birds by HI test was 29.2% with mean antibody titre of 2.69±0.51 log2 while the seroprevalence was highest in Ankpa, Ofu and Olamaboro LGAs each with 50.0% and lowest in Adavi, Mopamuro and Okene LGAs with 0.0%. Hirundinidae had the highest ND seroprevalence of 50.0% by HI test, followed by Apodidae with 33.3%, Columbidae with 23.1% and lowest in Accipitridae, Psittacidae, Muscicapidae, Ciconiidae and Sylvidae with 0.0% while 18.9% of the wild birds’ sera had antibody titre $7 log2. Using ELISA, the same sera from wild birds were analyzed with the overall seroprevalence of ND in free flying wild birds being 27.1% with mean antibody titre of 11.06±1.28 ELISA Units. The seroprevalence of ND using ELISA in wild birds was highest in Ankpa LGA with 42.9% and lowest in Mopamuro and Okene LGAs with 0.0%. Also using ELISA, the seroprevalence of ND among wild bird families was highest in Accipitridae with 66.7%, followed by Hirundinidae with 38.9%, Apodidae with 33.3%, Columbidae with 15.4% and lowest in Psittacidae, Muscicapidae, Ciconiidae as well as Sylvidae with 0.0%. The presence of ND antibodies in wild birds was an indication of natural exposure and the presence of wild type ND viruses in wild birds in Kogi State. It is recommended that vaccination of rural poultry should be encouraged, backyard poultry should be screened from wild birds and scavenging rural poultry.","PeriodicalId":21176,"journal":{"name":"Research Journal of Veterinary Sciences","volume":"15 1","pages":"52-60"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73351119","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study was designed to determine the factors affecting conception rate of non-descript local zebu cattle (n = 307) under Artificial Insemination (AI) program using frozen semen. The demographic factors were recorded by interviewing the farmers. All cows were examined for pregnancy diagnosis by rectal palpation of genital tract at 60-80 days post AI. The overall conception rate of zebu cows was 57.7% and the required service per conception was 2.19. The conception rate in cows that received 2nd and 3rd service was significantly (p<0.05) higher than that of 1st service. The conception rate in cows inseminated within 8-12 h after the start of standing oestrus was significantly (p<0.05) higher than the cows inseminated after 12 h of standing oestrus. Breed of semen donar bulls did not affect significantly the conception rate of zebu cows. The conception rate in cows that received insemination at $10 months post-calving was significantly (p<0.05) higher than that of #4 months. The conception rate was the highest in cows inseminated at parity 1 and 2 and in cows fed with combination of roughages, concentrate and grazing. Zebu cows of 4-6 years age and yield >1.5 L milk&day had significantly (p<0.05) higher conception rate than others. It is concluded that conception rate of non-descript indigenous zebu cows is influenced by postpartum insemination interval, interval from estrus to AI, parity, feeding practice, milk yield and age of zebu cows.","PeriodicalId":21176,"journal":{"name":"Research Journal of Veterinary Sciences","volume":"15 1","pages":"42-51"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79640575","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Despite the importance of the disease in animals, there is yet scarce trypanocides available for treatment of infected mammals. The present limitation in chemotherapy in trypanosomosis lead to assessment of the usefulness of imidocarb di propionate as an alternative trypanocide. Twenty one pathogen free albino rats were used in the study. They were randomly grouped into 3 of 7 members each. The GPA was uninfected control, GPB was infected with T. brucei brucei and treated with diminazene aceturate and GPC was infected with T. brucei brucei and treated with imidazole dipropionate. By 5 to 6 days post infection, there was a significant decrease in the PCV and Hb concentration values of the infected groups (GPB and GPC) and up to day 7 in GPC. There were haematological improvement in the infected groups by day 8 post infection (day 3 post treatment) on treatment with imidocarb dipropionate and diminazene in GPB and GPC, respectively. The rapid haematological improvements in the groups were attributed to prompt treatment and acuteness of the disease in the rats. It was concluded that T. brucei brucei alters both the PCV and Hb values of infected rats and treatment with imidocarb dipropionate significantly (p<0.05) improved altered haematological values and therefore could serve as an alternative trypanocide.","PeriodicalId":21176,"journal":{"name":"Research Journal of Veterinary Sciences","volume":"72 1","pages":"36-41"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78976473","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Moreover, when successfully transmitted to man, it may result in multisystem febrile illness, with hepatic, renal and pulmonary involvement and high mortality rates. This research determined the sero-epidemiology of Leptospira antibodies using, Microscopic Agglutination Test (MAT) in slaughtered cattle in selected states of North Central Nigeria. A prevalence rate of 57.9% for Leptospira antibodies were recorded for the slaughtered cattle. The most prevalent circulating serovars in the study locations were Hardjo 65 (27.8%), followed by Grippotyphosa 60 (25.6%). Older cattle were more likely to be seropositive, p = 0.000002. However, no significance was observed in seropositive rates between bulls and cows. The data generated by this study will help provide baseline information, as well as give latest indications about the extent of the problem in the study areas, assist in control and prevention of the condition in cattle and ultimately disease in the susceptible population.","PeriodicalId":21176,"journal":{"name":"Research Journal of Veterinary Sciences","volume":"35 1","pages":"21-28"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89876621","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
