We propose a bandwidth routing algorithm for multimedia support in a multihop wireless network. This network can be interconnected to wired networks (e.g. ATM or the Internet) or stand alone. Our bandwidth routing includes bandwidth calculation and reservation schemes. Under such a routing algorithm, we can derive a route to satisfy the bandwidth requirement for the QoS constraint. At a source node, the bandwidth information can be used to decide to accept a new call or not immediately. This is specially important to carry out a fast handoff when interconnecting to an ATM backbone infrastructure. It enables an efficient call admission control. The simulation results show that the bandwidth routing algorithm is very useful in extending the ATM virtual circuit service to the wireless network. Different types of QoS traffic can be integrated in such a dynamic radio network with high performance.","PeriodicalId":211490,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 23rd Annual Conference on Local Computer Networks. The challenges of handling data traffic in high speed networks are the processing power and space requirements. The hardware implementation of the required protocol processing, through a high gate density application specific integrated circuit (ASIC), provides much of the processing power; however, the space requirements for data handling are still demanding. From the reasons of cost and space, on a network adapter card, often such ASICs rely upon the host for data buffers in the host memory in addition to control and configuration. Such a reliance places demand on the host memory and requires a data and buffer management mechanism that provides a framework for optimization of the memory utilization and data packet latency. The design and implementation details of one such data and buffer management mechanism, the scatter and gather mechanism, are discussed in the paper.","PeriodicalId":211490,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 23rd Annual Conference on Local Computer Networks. The architecture uses a standards based infrastructure (TCP/IP, LDAP, X.500, and X.509) and 80% of the inter-application transaction requirements can be met with a few easy to use API primitives. The project's pilot phase demonstrated the feasibility of the architecture, and a broader implementation was planned Several interagency application interfaces for a new HS case management system are now in production. The architecture implements robust communication between applications using Message Oriented Middleware (MOM), a PKI security mechanism, a centralized directory for addressing and configuration information, incremental deployment, and centralized infrastructure management. Current development will incorporate enterprise level information management capabilities based on the common interchange mechanism and access to enterprise data via the WWW.","PeriodicalId":211490,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 23rd Annual Conference on Local Computer Networks. It provides all the classic functionality of a transport protocol, plus new services such as transport multicast, multicast group management, transport layer priorities, traffic descriptions for quality of service negotiation, rate and burst control, and selectable error and flow control mechanisms. XTP has wide interconnectivity because it operates over any network layer (IP, CLNP), any datalink layer (LLC, MAC), or directly on top of the AAL of ATM. In general, XTP avoids coupling policy with mechanism; XTP offers services but the user's application defines what communications paradigm is most appropriate for its particular environment. In spite of its richer functionality, XTP's reliable data transfer modes have performance characteristics similar to TCP and XTP's unacknowledged transfer mode has performance similar to UDP. Since XTP can run simultaneously with other transport protocols, and can run over whatever network layer (if any) is provided, it represents a low risk way to exploit the increased functionality required for cluster computing without sacrificing connectedness or interoperability.","PeriodicalId":211490,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 23rd Annual Conference on Local Computer Networks. The physical topology of an ATM network should be designed to provide flexibility to the logical VP reconfiguration in order to adapt to changing traffic conditions. Numerous algorithms have been proposed, but there is a lack of methodologies to assess these algorithms, to compare them and to determine the algorithm best suited for a given networking and end-system environment and application. In this paper a methodology to assess synchronization algorithms for distributed multimedia applications is presented. The methodology is based on four quality of service (QoS) parameters for synchronization comprising: asynchrony, synchronization error probability, synchronization delays, and buffer requirements. An analytical analysis of these parameters is performed. A key feature of this methodology, is that it parameterizes the network, the end-system, and the application. Thus, it allows for the assessment of any synchronization algorithm independent from the network and end-system. Influences of the infrastructure on synchronization can be determined by the proposed methodology.","PeriodicalId":211490,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 23rd Annual Conference on Local Computer Networks. Protocols of this family have been proved to achieve a significantly higher performance than the well-known contention-oriented or round-robin protocols. However, the need for electronic control of the filtering mechanism as well as the use of slowly tunable acoustooptic filters have been limiting factors in their performance. Furthermore, since the network hub of WDM star networks represents a single point of failure, the extensive use of electronic circuits at this point reduces the reliability of the system. In this paper, an all-optical centralized protocol is introduced. According to this protocol, the passing of the transmitted packets to the star coupler is controlled by means of optical logic circuits, without the need of optical to electronic translation or electronic processing of the network feedback information. In this way, the processing time is drastically reduced, while the need for acoustooptic filters is eliminated. Therefore, a significant performance improvement is achieved. Furthermore, due to the all-optical nature of the network hub, the reliability of the system is improved. The performance of the proposed protocol is studied via extensive analytical and simulation results which indicate that a WDM star network operating under this protocol achieves a high throughput-delay performance under any load conditions.","PeriodicalId":211490,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 23rd Annual Conference on Local Computer Networks. Improving network simulation with feedback 利用反馈改进网络仿真

Yet much modeling and simulation work employs exponential interarrivals in open-loop traffic sources. Historically these sources were chosen because they are amenable to analysis and easy to simulate, but they have serious shortcomings. Even when the source distribution is changed to reflect the burstiness of real traffic, we found that open-loop models fail to reproduce the detailed time structure and the crucial effects of feedback on traffic sources. An evaluation of a hybrid fiber coax (HFC) architecture is used to illustrate the inadequacy of traditional open-loop modeling. In addition, a promising intermediate technique of using \"local feedback\" is shown. Finally using feedback models, the interaction of the HFC architecture with TCP dynamics was studied using Web-browsing and file transfer applications. These studies led to a novel architectural improvement that would have been missed in an open-loop model.","PeriodicalId":211490,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 23rd Annual Conference on Local Computer Networks. Edge devices connecting LANs to an ATM network can use GFR to transport multiple TCP/IP connections over a single GFR VC. These devices would typically multiplex VCs into a single FIFO queue. It has been shown that in general, FIFO queuing is not sufficient to provide rate guarantees, and per-VC queuing with scheduling is needed. We show that under conditions of low buffer allocation, it is possible to control TCP rates with FIFO queuing and buffer management. We present analysis and simulation results on controlling TCP rates by buffer management. We present a buffer management policy that provides loose rate guarantees to SACK TCP sources when the total buffer allocation is low. We study the performance of this buffer management scheme by simulation.","PeriodicalId":211490,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 23rd Annual Conference on Local Computer Networks. LCN'98 (Cat. We model VBR carrying long-range dependent, multiplexed MPEG-2 video sources traffic. The actual traffic for the model is generated using fast-Fourier transform of the fractional Gaussian noise sequence. Our model of compressed video sources bears similarity to an MPEG-2 transport stream carrying video, i.e., it is long-range dependent and generates traffic in a piecewise constant bit rate manner. We study, the effect of such VBR traffic on ABR carrying TCP traffic. The effect of such VBR traffic is that the ABR capacity is highly variant. We find that a switch algorithm like ERICA+ can tolerate this variance in ABR capacity while maintaining high throughput and low delay. We present simulation results for terrestrial and satellite configurations.","PeriodicalId":211490,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 23rd Annual Conference on Local Computer Networks. LCN'98 (Cat.
