Such a model considers explicitly queues in the links, in order to take into account congestion phenomena which usually characterize urban traffic neworks (spillbacks, bottlenecks, etc.). The traffic network is modelled by means of a directed graph, and the equations which drive the dynamics of the system derive from the well-known LWR model. The proposed model has been applied to the urban traffic network of the city of Bologna, North Italy; in this connection, some results are reported in the paper.","PeriodicalId":211095,"journal":{"name":"2007 IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Conference","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-10-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128118865","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As one piece of environmental traffic information, the direction of approaching vehicles can be estimated from an analysis of sound sources. This gives information of approaching vehicles to drivers at intersections when visibility is poor. To prevent traffic accidents, it is necessary to detect the direction of approaching vehicles more accurately and rapidly. This paper describes a scheme that uses a uniform linear microphone array with four microphones to estimate the direction of approaching vehicles. We employ a correlation method to realize sound source localization and we propose a direction estimation method with cubic spline interpolation in Carter, G. C. and Abraham, P. B. (1980). Trials show that the proposed scheme offers good performance.","PeriodicalId":211095,"journal":{"name":"2007 IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Conference","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-10-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128140702","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A number of collision avoidance systems involve the deployment of sensors before the intersection to relay important information to the base station (BS) which controls a stop/warning signal visible to the driver. To this end a study of the limitations that sensor-intersection distance, sensor spacing, the number of sensors, measurement noise and variance in acceleration of a vehicle are examined through simulation of a sensor network. Specifically, a network employing magnetic field sensors that communicate wirelessly with the BS is examined, with the idea that general design principles can be applied to various other types of sensor networks. Special emphasis is placed on rural intersections which typically have static intersection driver directions (stop/yield signs) rather than traffic lights. Thorough analysis of the simulated system performance under ideal and non-ideal conditions is provided.","PeriodicalId":211095,"journal":{"name":"2007 IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Conference","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-10-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125246004","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

But driver's behavior depends on his or her mental states, so it is better to predict driver's behavior considering his or her states. In this paper we focused on driver's \"hasty state\", and induced it with quota to run using driving simulator. And we found that driver's \"hasty state\" has effect on AR-HMM model parameters such as gas pedal stroke and brake pedal stroke, and also on autonomic nervous activity. As a result, we could show possibility to improve prediction accuracy by switching driving behavior model depending on driver's states.","PeriodicalId":211095,"journal":{"name":"2007 IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Conference","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-10-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125611078","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Emerging positioning and communication technologies allow extending swarm intelligence to the traffic system. Vehicles equipped with sensors, actuators and wireless communication technology virtually annotate their local environment for indirect communication and therefore form a smart collective with self-organizing capabilities following the example of nature. Unfortunately, vector maps are not always available for many areas -especially for many of the third world countries. On the other hand, good paper maps collected by the city authorities are widely available. A solution is the collaborative map generation process that allows people to share the collected GPS traces. Nevertheless, the integration of these GPS traces is itself a challenge and requires a good base map. This paper presents a method to extract calibrated road topology from raster maps to provide such a base map for collaborative map generation process. Our approach takes a bitmap and uses different graphics filters to infer the road geometry. We propose an aggregation algorithm that extracts the actual vectorized road fragments and construct a graph of road network. To evaluate the proposed algorithms, we have implemented them and tested on real raster maps collected from the city authorities of Dortmund, Germany. We also report the integration of our approach into SUMO, a state-of-the-art traffic simulation tool for urban mobility.","PeriodicalId":211095,"journal":{"name":"2007 IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Conference","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-10-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133578143","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The corridor has been treated as a one dimensional link in the building network from which the pedestrians have to be evacuated. The governing flow equations are derived from the discretized continuity equation and a flow density relation for the pedestrian flow. Necessary conditions for the optimal control of these differential equations are developed using the calculus of variations method. The necessary conditions constitute a 2 point boundary value problem that has to be solved for the state, the co-state and the optimal control. Method of steepest descent is used to solve this problem. Numerical results are presented in the end for a test case.","PeriodicalId":211095,"journal":{"name":"2007 IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Conference","volume":"66 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-10-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133664199","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, most such systems are for freeways and very few of them focus on arterials or urban streets. This paper presents a real-time Google-map-based Arterial Traffic Information (GATI) system for urban streets in the City of Bellevue, Washington State. Open source web tools and emerging web technologies, such as Ajax, are used in implementing the system to ensure its performance and minimize its cost. Convenient administrative functions are enabled through advanced database design and the Model-View-Controller (MVC) application.
