This kind of truck has no risk of the reverse steering and is able to decrease the wheel lateral force greatly in the circular curve section. However, compared to the general bolster trucks, the steering truck has problems such as complicated truck maintenance work because of the complicated truck structure equipped with steering devices such as a steering links. Therefore, in order to devise a type of steering truck with a structure as simple as possible, the authors carried out a fundamental study of steering trucks equipped with fewer steering links than the existing one. In this paper, the authors report on the curving performance simulation analysis of a railway vehicle equipped with the steering truck, and also its result that the influence of the position and the number of steering links was confirmed. Regarding the types of the mounting position of the steering links, there are eight types including four links and none. The authors compared the curving performance by the lateral force of a leading axle in the curve section. In the simulation results, the lateral force under four-link condition was the smallest in the circular curve section. However, it increased in the trailing transition curve section. On the other hand, in the case of two links, the lateral force was greatly reduced in the trailing transition curve section.

In order to find a feasible configuration that satisfies the complex set of requirements, numerous timetables and track topologies have to be evaluated. Therefore, there is an immense need for automatic timetable and track topology design. This paper discusses the concept of creating abstraction layers based on a data model to support and simplify these designs. It uses different state-of-the-art models and combines them so that all aspects of railway operation are included. Using this method, a layer model has been developed that was inspired by the OSI Reference Model and takes current developments such as the UIC RailTopoModel into consideration. Possible applications of such a layer model are the automatic generation of timetables and track topologies, as well as entrance data for synchronous railway simulations for capacity evaluation, and a universal representation of a railway network.

The display of permissible speeds on the cab itself allows a relocation of the speed change from the signal to the actual point of danger – in this paper the start of a switch. Additionally, it is possible to display the speed as an exact value instead of an indicator rounded down to the nearest ten. The investigation of several switches shows that optimized speed changes can significantly reduce the running time. In a result, minimum headway times are decreased and hence the capacity is increased. Requiring less running time for a section makes it possible to carry out more train movements with the same operating quality or to improve the operating quality for an unchanged number of trains.

DEM can simulate peculiar deformation characteristics of ballasted layer, for examples, differential settlements around rail joints and migrations of ballast grains around canted track. DEM enable us to observe the micromechanical process of formation of such settlements or migrations. However, the quantitative accuracy of DEM has not been examined in railway engineering field. Then the author carried out a series of simple box tests by applying cyclic sinusoidal loadings on ballasted layers with same thickness and grading of real ballasted track. The series of tests have two cases of stiffness of box base, with and without rubber mat. The author took images of the ballast layers by using a high-speed camera to observe the behaviour of ballast grains with micromechanical views. Then the figures were analysed by using Particle Imaging Velocimetry to visualize the movement of ballast grains. At the same time, the author simulates the simple box test by DEM to validate the discrete element model of ballasted layer. The DEM results show that the difference of amplitude of loading plate’s displacement is influenced by contact stiffness of ballast grains predominantly, and that the difference of ballast settlement is influenced by friction coefficient between ballast grains predominantly.

Within this project we develop concepts for a new high-speed train, a regional train and a fast freight train. \u0000 \u0000For the fast freight train concept, called NGT CARGO, we analyzed an exemplary European corridor between Madrid and Bucharest. The train uses high-speed lines in Spain, France and Germany and then follows the Danube corridor railway lines through Austria, Hungary and Romania. A scenario was set up to shift adequate (high-value, expeditious goods) from truck transport to this high-speed rail system. Knowing the volume of goods from the traffic forecast 2030 from the German Ministry of Transport (BMVI) two rail-logistic approaches have been compared: a single-wagon system with shunting and a line train system where the goods are transshipped automatic between the trains in terminals. The goods of course have to be treatable in an automatic way, e.g. Euro pallets with maximum loading volume and fastened goods. The departure frequency of the trains has to be high in order to reach a high average transport speed. That’s why the volume of goods per train is low, which makes a single-wagon system inefficient. There complete wagons have to depart for instance daily notwithstanding their load factor. \u0000 \u0000Furthermore, a timetable analysis has been done for the German and partly the French section of the route to evaluate the feasibility of integrating a high-speed cargo train into the current and future traffic flow on conventional and high-speed lines. Passenger trains keep their higher priority (even local trains). Only conventional freight trains are ranked lower than the NGT CARGO. The analysis shows, that a train path under real conditions is slightly slower than the ideal trajectory, but this has not a deep impact to the average transport speed.

Martín
Polymeric materials (such as thermoplastics, rubbers, polyurethanes, etc.) have been extensively used to manufacture resilient rail pads; plastics, however, suffer from a series of intrinsic limitations since the environmental agents (UV rays, temperature, air humidity, etc.) as well as the compressive fatigue loads negatively affect their mechanical properties. This study proposes the use of a novel solution, the so-called “metal-rubber” pads, as a reliable alternative to polymer pads. They are made of stainless steel wire, knitted, embossed and cold-pressed down into a mould to achieve the required shape and size. The thorough experimental campaign carried out to validate the metal rubber pads includes the following tests: (i) Static and dynamic stiffness as indicated in EN 13146-9+A1 and EN 13481-2 guidelines respectively. Furthermore, by changing design factors like wire diameter, mesh density and geometrical shape variations, the evolution of stiffness characterization results is analysed. (ii) Corrosion resistance under UNE-EN 13416-5 and UNE-EN ISO 9227 guidelines. Metal rubber performance under these guidelines was compared with six polymeric materials. Four of them are employed in numerous railway lines. Results reveal a good fulfilment of requirements. Despite resulting in relatively higher values than recommended, both static and dynamic stiffness reach a close range to traditionally employed EVA and TPE-M. In the case of fatigue aging, the foremost wearing suffered by metal cushion occurs mainly in the early cycling stages, although the total cumulate damage is also comparable to traditional. Finally, it is found that design factors have a great influence over static and dynamic stiffness. Porosity reduction reveals to be a key factor to improve stiffness towards lower values as recommended in literature.

Yet most current travel demand models used for strategic timetable design do not support the evaluation of transfer reliability. An indicator is proposed which values the risk of missed transfers as the expected additional door-to-door travel time. The indicator allows transfers to be classified according to the total damage which breaking it would cause to passengers’ travel plans, in terms of later arrival at the final destination, and not just the extra wait time at the transfer station. The definition, calculation method, and data sources are discussed in turn. The most immediate application of the indicator is to identify high-risk transfers during strategic timetable design and apply multi-criteria comparison between timetable variants including the transfer risk in addition to more conventional indicators like travel time or number of transfers. Several additional use cases are presented, ranging from macro-economic valuation of passenger time loss within cost-benefit analyses, to estimating the amount of penalty payments by operators to passengers due to large delays, and assessing the value of infrastructure improvements from the perspective of reducing passenger risk.
