There are many opportunities for these organizations however, additional tools are needed to generate potential value from these data. When dealing with value creation it is essential identify the main beneficiaries from value being created. The research's objective, still in development, is to create applications using open technology for information treatment and display to make them more explicit creating value in such open data. To validate the principal research's theoretical concept, this paper conducted a proof of concept with open data from a federal government agency that supports and finances investments in small and medium enterprises. The results proved to be possible to develop predictions about the possible investment expenditures for next year in each sector.","PeriodicalId":210248,"journal":{"name":"2017 Computing Conference","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-01-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121708817","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is agreed that acquiring critical thinking skills is of utmost significance in higher education. Also several studies have shown that academic and classroom interventions are effective in improving learning and academic performance of students. In this paper, we study some learning strategies and interventions and examine their effect on improving learning and critical thinking in higher education. Specifically, we examine the effectiveness of carefully designed subject matter instructional interventions to improve and promote critical thinking skills in graduate computing courses. The evaluation results of this study are very encouraging and show that our interventions have positive effect in improving critical thinking skills among students.","PeriodicalId":210248,"journal":{"name":"2017 Computing Conference","volume":"70 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-07-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126903959","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Microblogging and social networking data are one of the most helpful and proper indicators of public opinion. The aim of this paper is to classify tweets to their classes using cross validation and partitioning the data across cities using supervised machine learning algorithms. Such an approach was used to collect real time Twitter microblogging data tweets towards mentioning iPad and iPhone in different locations in order to analyse and classify data in terms of polarity: positive or negative, and emotion: anger, joy, sadness, disgust, fear, and surprise. We have collected over eighty thousand tweets that have been pre-processed to generate document level ground truth and labelled according to Emotion and Polarity. We also compared some approaches in order to measures the performance of K-NN, Nave Bayes, and SVM classifiers. We found that the K-NN, Nave Bayes, SVM, and ZeroR have a reasonable accuracy rates, however, the K-NN has outperformed the Nave Bayes, SVM, and ZeroR based on the achieved accuracy rates and trained model time. The K-NN has achieved the highest accuracy rates 96.58% and 99.94% for the iPad and iPhone emotion data sets using cross validation technique respectively. Regarding partitioning the data per city, the K-NN has achieved the highest accuracy rates 98.8% and 99.95% for the iPad and iPhone emotion data sets respectively. Regarding the polarity data sets using both cross validation and partitioning data per city, the K-NN achieved 100% for the all polarity datasets.","PeriodicalId":210248,"journal":{"name":"2017 Computing Conference","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-07-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132129481","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The objective of this work is to empower the building occupants by putting them in the loop of efficient energy use, supporting them to achieve their objectives by pointing out how far their actions are from an optimal set of actions. Different levels of explanation are investigated. Indicators measuring the distance to optimality are, firstly, proposed. An algorithm that generates deeper explanations is then presented to determine how changing some actions impacts comfort. The paper emphasizes the importance of explanations with a real case study. It identifies the type and level of explanations needed for different occupants. The concept of replay is presented. An occupant can replay his past actions and learn from them.","PeriodicalId":210248,"journal":{"name":"2017 Computing Conference","volume":"197 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-07-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121995158","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is usually handled with heuristic and/or artificial intelligent approaches. Examination timetabling problem is part of Timetabling problem that consists of allocating a set of exams (courses) in a finite period of time while satisfying a set of constraints of various types. Examination timetabling problem have still been studying due to their wide applications. Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) technique is a well-known intelligent method that has been successfully applied to many hard combinatorial optimization problems but not widely used in this field of problem. In this paper, we propose a new hybrid approach based on PSO. The proposed algorithm has considerable results and usually a good stability.","PeriodicalId":210248,"journal":{"name":"2017 Computing Conference","volume":"72 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-07-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132695695","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper seeks to understand how AI and ML have been applied to the realm of patient care within the context of chronic disease, with a specific focus on Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). First we present an overview of IBD, highlighting the nature of the disease and some of the challenges the various stakeholders face within the framework of outpatient care. Then we outline the current state of research into the application of AI and ML in general clinical care and in relation to IBD. After which we explore how both AI and ML have been utilized to help with the outpatient treatment of chronic illnesses which share similar challenges to that of IBD, such as Diabetes, mental health conditions and Parkinson's disease, so as to gain precedent into how similar techniques may be used to assist in IBD outpatient support. Finally, we discuss the work that has passed and explore the prospect of future research into the field.","PeriodicalId":210248,"journal":{"name":"2017 Computing Conference","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-07-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114410186","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We attempt to prove a hypothesis that expert skills have lower frequency motions, rather than the similarity of novice skills as human gesture control. To this end, we use volleyball to attack the time series of moving images for experimentation and exercise techniques to analyze the movement frequency. In our study, using high-speed cameras to record motion image data to analyze volleyball matches, we do not use physical information like body skeleton models. The time series data is measured from moving image data with four marker points and analyzed by fast Fourier transform (FFT) as well as Mel-frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCC), using clustering methods. The experimental results show that novice data has higher frequency data, which means that novice moves with high frequency motion, which may help us to assume that expert players use low frequency motion.","PeriodicalId":210248,"journal":{"name":"2017 Computing Conference","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-07-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116487308","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Researchers found that young users are particularly inclined to believe what they read on social media without adequate verification of the information. There has been some research to study the spread of misinformation and identification of key variables in developing simulations of the process. Current literature on combating misinformation focuses on individuals and neglects social newsgroups-key players in the dissemination of information online. Using benchmark variables and values from the literature, the authors simulated the process using Biolayout; a big data-modeling tool. The results show social newsgroups have significant impact in the explosion of misinformation as well as combating misinformation. The outcome has helped better understand and visualize how misinformation travels in the spatial space of social media.","PeriodicalId":210248,"journal":{"name":"2017 Computing Conference","volume":"144 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-07-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123247407","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
