More specifically, the power consumed by the transmit circuitry during a call will typically be three to four times that used in receive. Dominating the transmit power consumption is the RF amplifier (\"PA\"), a component whose efficiency today is at best 55% (i.e. approx. half the PA battery drain is wasted as heat) and more typically only 30% to 40% for CDMA and TDMA handsets. Techniques for improving PA efficiency will therefore have the single greatest impact on improving talk time in all handset designs. This paper describes the front line candidates for increasing amplifier efficiency, (in some cases beyond 70%), and provides measurement and simulation data from test units.","PeriodicalId":208285,"journal":{"name":"WCNC. 1999 IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference (Cat. One of the major problems in OFDM systems is nonlinear distortion caused by high-power amplifiers. In this paper, the effect of non-perfect power amplification on OFDM-CDMA systems is examined. Simulation results show that, with an ideally linearized amplifier, the performance of OFDM-CDMA systems can be improved over an AWGN channel. Each scheme is simulated for one- and two-path Rayleigh fading channels, and for a one-path Rician fading channel with different k-factors. For configurations employing a coding rate of 1/2 , it is shown that PSTD can significantly outperform OTD when the fading is Rayleigh distributed. For configurations using a coding rate of 1/3, the two methods provide similar performance under Rayleigh fading conditions. Under Rician fading conditions, OTD provides gain over PSTD for both code rates. In this paper, based on CORBA security service specification which the OMG defined, we propose an integrated secure-negotiation service for subjects of electronic commerce, providing mutual authentication and label-based authorization. This proposed structure, by Kerberos for authentication and authenticated key exchange, assures not only the identification of a partner but also the confidence of origin of the business item for negotiations between subjects of electronic commerce. Additionally, the majority of the latency in a WWAN connection is incurred over the wireless link. Under such operating conditions, most contemporary wireless TCP algorithms do not perform very well. Sinha, Venkitaraman, Sivakumar and Bharghavan (see Proc. of ACM Mobicom '99, 1999) we presented WTCP, a reliable transport protocol that is designed to operate efficiently and fairly over wireless wide area networks. WTCP is rate-based, uses only end-to-end mechanisms, performs rate control at the receiver, and uses the ratio of sending rate to receiving rate as as the primary metric for rate control. In this paper, we evaluate the performance of WTCP over CDPD networks. We have implemented and evaluated WTCP over the CDPD network, and also simulated it in the ns-2 simulator. Our performance results indicate that WTCP can improve on the performance of comparable algorithms such as TCP-NewReno and TCP-Vegas by between 20% to 200% for typical operating conditions.","PeriodicalId":208285,"journal":{"name":"WCNC. 1999 IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference (Cat. The kernel's architecture is modular, and follows a composition-based approach to protocol kernel construction. In this approach, interacting policies are logically, vertically closely-coupled, but physically loosely-coupled. Thus, various components of the kernel may be changed more easily. The architecture supports the notion of routing through an IP-layer routing \"fabric\", a construction which is a logical union of multiple, multi-hop topologies-each network using a different link layer technology. Knowing that the optimal design has an exponential complexity which hinders the practicability, a reduced complexity approach is proposed. This approach keeps the existing channel estimation and decoding schemes almost intact, while applying the turbo or iterative processing principle to enable information exchange between them. Thus the complexity is rendered linear; and the filter adaptability can be easily established. We apply this approach to two commonly used modulation schemes for noncoherent detection, namely, pilot symbol assisted modulation (PSAM) and differential modulation, with the intention to overcome certain disadvantages seen in their demodulation. It turns out that the performance is improved and the robustness is enhanced. In this paper, we first give the system descriptions of the two applications. Their performances are then simulated and compared with the existing systems. The turbo code is recommended as a channel coding scheme in cdma2000 for data rates higher than 14.4 kbps due to its superior performance over the conventional convolutional code. We compare the performance of turbo codes using optimum log-MAP decoder and sub-optimum max-log-MAP and SOVA decoding schemes in direct spread forward link (from BS to MS). Different multipath channel environments are studied with Monte-Carlo simulations. The effect of channel estimation is also addressed. The performance of turbo codes is compared to conventional convolutional coding.
