Evidence is provided on: (1) mean levels of self-reported life satisfaction; (2) trends in these means; and (3) differences in the determinants of life satisfaction between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians. The results indicate that Indigenous Australians’ wellbeing has changed little over the period from 2001 to 2015. Contrary to a priori expectations, Indigenous Australians with higher levels of income and education are observed to report lower levels of wellbeing. This result questions the direction of current policies aimed at enhancing Indigenous wellbeing.","PeriodicalId":208037,"journal":{"name":"Routledge Handbook of Indigenous Wellbeing","volume":"81 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114852471","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The book provides a summary of the respective domains of wellbeing by region. Young Sami people and children are proud to be Sami; they have great respect for their culture and take an active responsibility to ensure the preservation of their language and traditions. The Inuit in Canada have faced dramatic and rapid changes in ways of life and livelihoods, including land dispossession, and environmental changes that are disrupting their ability to practice and participate in traditional, land-based activities. Research conducted on the employment income of Canadas Indigenous peoples demonstrates the explanatory significance of human and social capital as measures of wellbeing. A review on the measurement of subjective wellbeing among Aboriginal peoples of Canada demonstrated an underdeveloped and restricted understanding of the perceptions of life satisfaction and happiness in these Native populations.","PeriodicalId":208037,"journal":{"name":"Routledge Handbook of Indigenous Wellbeing","volume":"138 5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128803696","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
