In this paper, we present a reusable general-purpose software framework for the visualization of and interaction with such digital object memories. The framework simplifies the implementation of applications which support end users based on information stored in object memories. Challenges arise from the open nature of object memories, where format and semantic of contained data is usually not known in advance. The framework applies plugins for visualization, data conversion and inferencing. A planning algorithm automatically constructs a data processing and visualization pipeline for each new object. Objects can become self-representative by providing their own plugins, which the framework dynamically integrates into the generated pipeline. These are the first steps of a human-centered ambient intelligent system, ranging from data acquisition to robust tracking, for the purpose of interpreting human behaviors in monitored environments. The first objective is to improve human detection through the fusion of thermal-infrared and color video segmentation. On the level following to segmentation, the traditional tracking problems (e.g. occlusions, crossings, etc.) are faced. Finally, the use of several classifiers such as support-vector machines and artificial neural networks are proposed to enhance the tracking level. The development processes, underlying tools and methods have however not yet been in the focus of researchers. A significant amount of time has to be spent for building a novel ecology of distributed systems to form an Intelligent Environment to conduct novel research in. A sophisticated middleware can shift the focus from building to research. Yet, a middleware is only one of the many requirements for leveraging the development process of Intelligent Environments. In this paper, we present a complete tool chain to simplify research on Intelligent Environments and to ease their creation. This tool chain consists out of middleware, simulation, visualization and prototyping tools. We start by modeling the physical environment using a CAD software and visualization tool including physical properties. The tool chain is complemented by a middleware and a sophisticated simulation environment allowing e.g. to simulate mobile phone interactions triggering, and the deployment to the real-world events. For developers and researchers of Intelligent Environments, creation and maintenance of Intelligent Environments is significantly improved. The use of simulated data is necessary because there is very little sensor-level behavioural-data available in the literature and, moreover, these data are very specific of the set-up used to collect them, i.e. the kind of sensors, the people behavior and age, the environment characteristics, and so on. Moreover, data collection requires a long time since the phenomena we are interested in last months or years. The experimental implementation is realized in collaboration with the professors of the 1st General High School of Agios Dimitrios. Temperature sensors, humidity and illumination are placed in structures parametrically designed according to the bioclimatic conditions of the space of the school yard and have been sited in accordance with the operational needs of the complex. Using a web interface, the customer can create an electronic shopping list, associate items with recommended music, and thus create his individual shopping play list. The provided instrumental music tracks are additionally categorized by their emotional expression to allow a selection based on the user's favorite mood. The product-associated music tracks start playing at the customer's instrumented shopping cart as soon as he enters specific product departments where items from his shopping list are located. We also introduce a service to provide product-awareness through non-speech audio cues. This location aware service notifies customers when they come closer to products that are listed on their shopping lists. We use a two stage notification approach by creating user-centric notification zones. Depending on the customer's distance to the product, he gets notified by an ambient or arousal noise that is mixed into the background music. In this paper, we present a detailed small-scale model of an instrumented two-rooms apartment and show how the model can be utilized for designing, evaluating and controlling intelligent environments. Moraru","doi":"10.1109/IE.2011.29","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/IE.2011.29","url":null,"abstract":"As a first stage task, this paper presents the study on what represents and how it is possible to ensure the indoor office comfort, which are the most important types of comfort (thermal, visual, acoustic, air quality, etc.) and how each of them could be analyzed (characterized). Few of them have a mathematical interpretation, more or less precise, which permits to make estimations. All types of comfort could be described using their characteristic parameters. When it is necessary specific building installations react to correct the parameters values, using different predefined methods, for establishing in this way a higher comfort level. Usually it is not possible to ensure the same comfort level for all occupants, due to the differences which exist between them (metabolism, activities, clothing, etc.).
