The approach taken was to perform a survey of the nematodes and certain environmental parameters of sandy and mangrove areas at Lok Kawi beach, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia. Two stations were established at the sandflat (S1) and mudflat (mangrove) areas (S2) of the Lok Kawi beach. Stations 1 and 2 are located at the same tidal level (Mean High Water Neap). Sampling was carried out once every two weeks for periods of 18 months. The species diversity and species richness in the sandy station were lower in February and April 1993. In the muddy station, the species diversity and number of species were lower in May 1993. The rainfall had a strong correlation with the species richness at the sandy station, and thus influenced the diversity of the nematodes. Low rainfall in the drier months (Jan to March) triggered blooms of benthic algae and caused the dominant nematode species to increase in densities. However, the number of nematodes species were reduced possibly due to high competition for food amongst the species.","PeriodicalId":206512,"journal":{"name":"The Philippine Scientist","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-07-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126848299","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A mark and recapture technique was employed to quantify the overall population of Dolabella in the area. A feeding experiment was also conducted to determine if algal type (food preference among the green alga, Cladophora sp., the brown alga, Sargassum cristaefolium and the seagrass Cymodocea rotundata), time of day (daytime vs nighttime) and size (small vs large specimens) could significantly affect the feeding rate of D. auricularia. The estimated population of D. auricularia ranged from 4,163 – 14,288 individuals. Assuming only 2 hectares of the 15-hectare embayment are inhabited by the sea hare, the population density would ranged from 2-7 individuals/10 m. The ingestion rate by food type showed the following order of preference: Cladophora sp. > C. rotundata > S. cristaefolium. Time of day did not significantly affect overall ingestion rate of the sea hare. However, smaller individuals ( 100 g) whether it is during the day or night. The daily ration of D. auricularia for the green alga, Cladophora is about 47 g FW *Corresponding author’s email address: dydt_up@yahoo.com The Philippine Scientist, Volume 42 (2005) 68 for sea hare 100 g. Considering the population size of the Dolabella and its ingestion rate with particular preference for Cladophora, it can be deduced that the D. auricularia population should be an important structuring force in regulating the growth of Cladophora in the shallow embayment.","PeriodicalId":206512,"journal":{"name":"The Philippine Scientist","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-07-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126969011","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
