It was hypothesized that supplementation would attenuate the levels of indirect muscle damage markers and muscle soreness following exercise-induced muscle damage, and facilitate the restoration of muscle function. A total of 50 untrained males were randomly divided into five groups; Leu (n = 10), Ilue (n = 10), Val (n = 10), BCAA (n = 10), and placebo (n = 10). The muscle damage protocol specific to non-athletes is used in the current study. A 500 ml of group-specific solution was given to each group in two time points, 30 minutes before and immediately after performing the exercise. Multivariate analysis showed significant time differences for LDH in all groups (p<0.05); there were significant multivariate time differences in all groups regarding creatine kinase (CK) (p=0.000 for all groups). A significant time differences observed in all groups regarding repetition maximum [RM] (p<0.01) and pain (p=0.000 for all groups). The results of this investigation show that compared to combined BCAA, Ilue or Val; Leu provides more protective effect on attenuating the immediate increase in biochemical markers of muscle damage following eccentric-based resistance exercise, while combined BCAA may aid to maintain the range of motion. Additionally the results showed that perceived pain by individuals in the placebo group was significantly higher compared to all other groups. Hence, BCAA intake, especially Leu, in the dosage used in this investigation is ergogenic for untrained males.","PeriodicalId":20600,"journal":{"name":"Progress in Nutrition","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-03-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45825076","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

High-protein diets are often used as a quick and easy way to achieve weight loss in those who are overweight or obese. People using for a long time this type of diet are not aware that it can cause serious health problems, therefore it is very important to monitor the effects of long-term use of high-protein diets. Aim. The aim of this study was to evaluate the high–protein diet (Dukan Diet) and after its completion, as well as to assess the nutritional status of women on the basis of biochemical parameters of blood: morphology, blood sugar, lipid profile and hepatic profile, in order to determine the health consequences of the high-protein diet. Material and Methods. The study included 32 women aged 19 to 56, who had followed the Dukan Diet in the past (2 year ago). A 7-day nutrition diary was used to assess nutrition after the Dukan Diet, where 5 days were working days and 2 days were non-working days. Nutritional status was assessed on the basis of anthropometric measurements and the morphological and biochemical parameters of blood: blood count, fasting blood glucose levels, lipid profile, the profile of the hepatic were analyzed in an accredited analytical laboratory, and these values were determined using  haematological and biochemical indicators measured on an Analyzer at Sysmex K-1000 and Vitalab Flexor, respectively. Results. The resulting analysis shows that women did not receive adequate amounts of energy from the diets. Diets were deficient in terms of most nutrients, while in other cases the values exceeded the recommended standards. Analysis has shown that the Dukan Diet is deficient in many vitamins, including vitamins C and B, nor does this diet provide a sufficient amount of dietary fiber. It has been observed of minerals deficiency (iron, magnesium, copper) both during and after the protein diet. Moreover, subjects revealed an increased concentration of eosinophils, basophils, monocytes, triglycerides, LDL cholesterol, glucose in the blood. Conclusions. The diet of women after the end of high-protein diet is still abnormal as evidenced by improper blood chemistry markers. Women should be under the control of a dietitian.","PeriodicalId":20600,"journal":{"name":"Progress in Nutrition","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-02-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45305980","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The present study was designed to investigate the possible antidiabetic and antioxidant effects of goldenberry and lupin on brain and muscle tissues of streptozotocin-induced type II diabetic rats. Type II diabetes was produced in albino rats by the streptozotocin injection. Wistar albino rats were divided into four groups, each one containing 10 rats: non-diabetic control group, STZ- type II Diabetes group, STZ- type II Diabetes+goldenberry group, and STZ- type II Diabetes+lupin group. After one week from the injection, goldenberry and lupin were injected to rats for 2 months. Malondialdehyde, glutathione, cholesterol, and fatty acid levels, which are signs of lipid peroxidation, were measured in brain and muscle tissues. In type II diabetes, malondialdehyde increased compared to the control group. Glutathione decreased in the both tissues and all of the streptozotocin-induced diabetic groups. In type II diabetes, brain cholesterol levels decreased. Treatment with similar doses of goldenberry and lupin significantly reduced oxidative stress, augments antioxidant system and altered fatty acid metabolism in these tissues, thereby maintaining favourable fatty acid distribution affected by diabetic complications. These results validate the use of goldenberry and lupin fruits as a treatment against diabetes mellitus and its complications and suggest it is suitable to continue studies for its safe therapeutic use.","PeriodicalId":20600,"journal":{"name":"Progress in Nutrition","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-02-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45846455","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Methods: The participants were 718 males and 761 females, in total 1479 adolescents aged between 13 and 18 years. The Eating Attitude Test-26 (EAT-26) and Body Cathexis Scale (BCS) were used to assess eating attitudes and body satisfaction respectively. Data from the study were evaluated statistically by chi-square test. Results: Our results showed that 2.93 % of males and 40.07 of females faced a high risk of having an eating disorder. Our findings confirm that females are more at risk of eating disorders. The BCS of males (90.8 ± 20.8) was found significantly higher than females (81.3 ± 16.8) ( p<0.001), which indicates that females are less content than about their appearance. We also found that 6.3 % of males and 18.2 % of females thought that they were overweight, and 22.9% of females and 4.3 % of males perceived themselves as obese. While 58.6 % of males perceived their body image as correct, 65.8 % of females did not (p<0.05). Conclusion: Together these results confirm that female adolescents tend to be less satisfied with their weight and more likely to display disordered eating attitudes. \u0000  \u0000Keywords: Adolescents, Eating Attitude Test-26, Body Cathexis Scale, Body Satisfaction","PeriodicalId":20600,"journal":{"name":"Progress in Nutrition","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-02-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48588773","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the study, 32 rats were divided into four groups consisting eight animals in each. Control group fed for 5 days with only saline with gavage, IN group fed for 5 days with an oral IN formula three times a day, MTX group with an intraperitoneal single dose MTX (20 mg/kg), followed by saline with gavage, MTX-IN group with a single dose of MTX, followed by an oral IN formula three times a day. The blood and jejunal tissue sample were collected and then the rats were sacrificed on the sixth day of the study. The level of TNF-α, IL-1β in serum, luminol, lusigenin, glutathione, myeloperoxidase, malondialdehyde and Na-K+ATPase in the jejunal tissue samples were analyzed. Histopathological examination was performed in the jejunal tissue samples. In the MTX group, TNF-α, IL-1β levels in serum, and luminol, lusigenin, malondialdehyde levels, and myeloperoxidase activity in tissue samples were found significantly higher than the control group. Glutathione and Na-K+ATPase levels were lower in the jejunal tissue of the MTX group compared to control group. However, the supplementation of IN with the MTX resulted in a significant increase in glutathione and Na-K+ATPase levels. Severe epithelium loss and inflammatory cell increase were observed in the MTX group on histological examination, whereas these parameters were regressed in the MTX-IN group. Increasing in the mitosis rate of enterocytes and inflammatory cell density decreased with the IN. In conclusion, this study shows that chemotherapy has adverse effects on intestinal mucosa and the IN formula has a protective effect of on MTX-associated intestinal damage.","PeriodicalId":20600,"journal":{"name":"Progress in Nutrition","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-02-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48518546","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this context, wheat flour was enriched with varying levels (5, 10, 15, 20 and 25%) of sesame protein isolates (SPI). Flour blends were used to prepare protein enriched muffins that were further evaluated for chemical composition, gross energy, color & textural analysis, and sensorial appraisal. The results were quite conclusive that nutritional quality of the muffins was improved with addition of SPI. Moreover, color analysis showed decreasing trend for L* & b* value, chroma and hue angle, while increasing trend was noticed for a* value. Likewise, the texture profile of muffins showed that firmness increased while elasticity decreased with gradual increase in protein contents. Sensory evaluation showed that muffins containing 15% SPI were rated better by the trained panelists. Conclusively, owing to high nutritive value and balanced nutritional profile, the use of sesame protein isolates can be handy tool to improve the nutritional quality of wheat based bakery products. These protein enriched products i.e. muffins can also help to fulfill the nutritional requirements of masses especially in developing countries.","PeriodicalId":20600,"journal":{"name":"Progress in Nutrition","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-02-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41975851","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Methods: One thousand and fifty five adolescents aged 13-15 years old completed this cross-sectional study. Participants were selected from secondary schools in Shiraz, one of the megacities of Iran, using stratified random sampling. A modified version of revised children’s diet quality index (M-RCDQI), was calculated for each adolescents and its association with the model construct was assessed using linear regression. Results: Mean M-RCDQI score was 58.91±8.58 out of the total of 90 points. Among the M-RCDQI components, the worse scores were obtained by dairy intake, dietary fiber and vegetables in which less than 20% of the students reached maximum score. Among HBM constructs, cues to action (B=0.194, p=0.003) and self-efficacy (B=0.04, p=0.007) had positive, significant association with adolescents’ diet quality. Also there was a positive, significant association between cues to action and fruits consumption (B=0.026, P=0.026), and a negative significant association was seen between cues to action and total fat intake (B=-0.629, p=0.021). Furthermore, self-efficacy had a direct significant association with dairy intake. Conclusion: M-RCDQI could be a suitable tool for assessment of diet quality index and it is recommended for use in further studies in similar populations. Some studies suggest that obesity may be related to eating patterns, such as meal frequency, temporal distribution of eating events during the day, meal skipping and the frequency of out of meals. Therefore, in this cross-sectional study was investigated the relationships between meal frequency, anthropometric measurements, energy-macro/micronutrient intakes and meal skipping frequency for 1829 volunteer (520 men, 1309 women) adults aged between 40 and 64 years old, from Ankara, Turkey. The median meal frequency of women and men were 4 and 3, respectively. Approximately 57% of men and 61% of women have skipped meals and 76.8% of them were skipped their lunch. The meal frequency positively correlated with waist/ hip ratio in women (p<0.05). Additionally, there were positively significant correlations between meal frequency and saturated fatty acids, fiber, vitamin A, tiamine, riboflavin, folate, vitamin B6, vitamin C, calcium, magnesium, iron and copper intake (p<0.05). As a conclusion, the data indicate that increased meal frequency may have a beneficial effect on micronutrients intakes and some anthropometric measurements among adults.","PeriodicalId":20600,"journal":{"name":"Progress in Nutrition","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"68833820","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Lipid abnormalities in diabetic patients are not only related to higher risk of CVD, but also accelerate the progression of diabetic nephropathy. To the best of our knowledge, there is no study that has assessed the effects of probiotic soy milk on lipid profile in type 2 diabetic patients with nephropathy. Objective: The current study was designed to examine the effects of consumption of soy milk containing lactobacillus plantarum A7 compared with conventional soy milk on lipid panel in type 2 diabetic patients with nephropathy. Methods: A total of 44 type 2 diabetic patients with nephropathy were randomly assigned to receive 200 ml/day of either probiotic soy milk (n=22) or conventional soy milk (n=22) for eight weeks, in this randomized double-blind clinical trial. Fasting blood samples were taken at the beginning and after eight weeks of the intervention for analysis of lipid profile and other relevant variables. P values < 0.05 were considered as statistically significant. Results: Consumption of probiotic soy milk for 8 weeks led to an increase in serum genistein (17.6±15.3 vs. 4.5±2.3, p=0.002) and eGFR (15.9±10.8 vs. 3.2±8.4, p<0.001) compared with conventional soy milk. Additionally probiotic soy milk resulted in decreased LDL-cholesterol (-9.2±10.4 vs. -2.2±5.2, p=0.01), total cholesterol (-12.4±4.8 vs. -4.87±14.7, p=0.04), non-HDL cholesterol (-15.3±4.5 vs. -5.9±14.7, p=0.01) and serum TG (-14.6±12.5 vs. -3.9±9.3, p=0.007) compared with control group. We did not detect any significant effect of probiotic soy milk on serum HDL-cholestrol (1.11±3.38 vs. 0.90±2.7, p=0.8) and serum phosphorus (-0.14±0.10 vs. 0.05±0.5, p=0.1). Conclusion: Administration of soy milk containing lactobacillus plantarum A7 in type 2 diabetic patients with nephropathy had beneficial effects on lipid profile and glomerular function, but did not affect HDL-cholesterol. In addition probiotic soy milk did not result in a significant elevation in the serum phosphorus concentration.
