In order to get high precision position information of railroad vehicles, modules and subsystems such as GPS module, wheel sensors, and RFID tags are used for various detection methods. Among the detection methods, position detection based on RFID tags placed onto the sleepers of the track is examined in this paper. Position information of each tag is transmitted to the reader installed at the bottom of railroad vehicle, following the wireless power transfer from the reader coil to the tag coil. By the wireless power transfer, the energy required for the position information transmission is harvested by each tag. The wireless power transfer mechanism from the reader coil to the tag coil is the magnetic induction, so power transfer efficiency is substantially affected by the relative location and relative tilting direction of the reader coil to the tag coil. From this viewpoint, improved power transfer efficiency can be achieved by tilting coils. Two tilting coils, with their tilting angles favorable to the reader coil position, which is slightly off the axial position, and a leveled coil are combined. The power transfer efficiency obtained from these three coils is compared with the one by the conventional leveled reader coil. Due to tilting directions of the reader coils, significant gain is obtained even at off-axis positions of them. Simulation to show the improved efficiency by tilting coils is executed and the results are shown.","PeriodicalId":205916,"journal":{"name":"2015 International EURASIP Workshop on RFID Technology (EURFID)","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114965097","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We propose a scheme that exploits collisions in the acquisition phase, which is enabled by compressed sensing techniques. As an extension to previous work, it allows a more flexible usage of the compressed sensing-based approach for RFID. All activated tags randomly select a signature from a huge signature pool and simultaneously transmit it as a response to a query from the reader. The number of superposed signatures at the reader is significantly smaller than the total signature count, which introduces sparsity to the problem. Utilizing compressed sensing recovery, we determine the set of activated tags, which can then be read out and identified. Our formulation allows to use a computationally efficient approximate message passing algorithm for recovery. The tag identification proves to be quicker and more robust to noise compared to FSA, which we show by simulation.","PeriodicalId":205916,"journal":{"name":"2015 International EURASIP Workshop on RFID Technology (EURFID)","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116287780","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The localization of a conventional active UHF RFID transponder has obvious drawbacks in the needed hardware on the reader side. The transponder sends only its label and no additional position information is available at the reader. Therefore, a direction finding system and a received signal strength (rss) detector for distance estimation in addition to the reader itself is needed. The huge hardware effort required reader side can be prevented by developing a transponder with an integrated GPS Module for localization. Thus, the focus is on a small transponder design, which leads to a trade-off between the requirements of the desired performance and the realization of the localization system, consisting of an active GPS-UHF transponder and the corresponding reader unit. Especially the conditions for the communication between the transponder and the reader related to limited power supply has to be minded. Furthermore, the transponder realization is shown and the considerations were metrological demonstrated.","PeriodicalId":205916,"journal":{"name":"2015 International EURASIP Workshop on RFID Technology (EURFID)","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126568737","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we show how OOA estimation can be performed by an UWB-UHF RFID system that allows identification and tracking of passive and semi-passive tags attached to objects moving on a conveyor belt. Particle filtering on the energy samples of the backscattered signal is introduced for OOA estimation. The two most prominent scatter radio architectures, namely the monostatic and the bistatic, are compared. Comparison metrics include bit error probability under maximum-likelihood detection for the single-user case and outage probability for the multi-user case (including tight bounds). This work concretely shows that the bistatic architecture improves coverage and system reliability. Utilizing this fact, a bistatic, digital scatter radio sensor network, perhaps the first of its kind, using frequency-shift keying (FSK) modulation and access, is implemented and demonstrated.","PeriodicalId":205916,"journal":{"name":"2015 International EURASIP Workshop on RFID Technology (EURFID)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130893927","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper derives a transmission model to analyze the intersymbol interference generated by the PCD-to-PICC coupled antennas. An equalizer structure is then introduced and performance compared against previous generations of very-high bit rate systems using amplitude shift keying. It concludes that PSK modulations proposed for VHBR can be robust even when the resonance of the antenna circuits is relatively high.","PeriodicalId":205916,"journal":{"name":"2015 International EURASIP Workshop on RFID Technology (EURFID)","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116881526","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Tag localization is achieved via a phase difference of arrival technique. A channel measurement campaign was conducted in an engine test environment. Scattering parameters were measured at several line-of-sight and non-line-of-sight tag positions. The measured S parameters were used in the simulator to emulate a real indoor multipath channel. The simulator estimates accurate direction of arrival at several tag positions of the measurement campaign. There is a maximum error of 32° and minimum of 0.4° between the geometrically calculated and simulated angles.","PeriodicalId":205916,"journal":{"name":"2015 International EURASIP Workshop on RFID Technology (EURFID)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134396510","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The most part of last generation smartphones are provided with NFC connectivity and a wide number of applications are emerging in several different fields. While mobile payment and mobile ticketing applications have been widely tested and developed, no study exists concerning the use of NFC technology under water. While the most part of radio technologies is useless under water due to signal fading, NFC, operating at 13.56MHz, can be able to achieve a very short communication range, allowing contactless data transmission. In this paper the technical aspects of NFC operation under water are analyzed, the results of laboratory tests proving the functionality of the technological solution are presented and a set of possible use cases where NFC could be employed in underwater activities is suggested. In particular, the paper focuses on the possible use of NFC for an Underwater Smart Poster application.","PeriodicalId":205916,"journal":{"name":"2015 International EURASIP Workshop on RFID Technology (EURFID)","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122258085","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We move from our recent work, where we have shown that an UWB-enhanced architecture, that guarantees full backward compatibility with ISO/IEC 18000- 6C UHF standard, can improve by approximately 25% the performance in terms of success rate and energy consumption. The second step is concerned with the proposal of a further tag identification protocol, that is based on compressive sensing (CS) and UWB: the main feature of the proposed scheme is that it exploits UWB information to reduce the ID search space of CS decoding. This hybrid technique is still oriented to further decrease the speed in tag identification, while reducing the computational complexity if compared to an UHF-RFID only protocol. Finally, we extend our approach to the case of multiple readers, that do not only improve coverage, but can also further improve the performance indexes: in this case a cooperative approach is proposed in order to also manage readertag collisions and reader-reader collisions other than the typical tag-tag collisions.","PeriodicalId":205916,"journal":{"name":"2015 International EURASIP Workshop on RFID Technology (EURFID)","volume":"72 2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130328718","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to their outstanding mechanical characteristics, CFRP are increasingly used for high-volume production i.e. for the automotive industry. However, the industrial application of these materials results in high costs because of a lack of adequate production systems. High-volume production requires appropriate machinery and a reduction of material cost and cycle times. In addition, capable process control systems are necessary to ensure a full traceability of the CFRP products. Radio-frequency identification (RFID) is an innovative technique that can help to achieve the logistic objectives and avoid non value-adding activities for the documentation of the production process. Therefore RFID should be included in composite materials. This paper presents the fabrication process of CFRP and discusses its requirements for the integration of RFID.","PeriodicalId":205916,"journal":{"name":"2015 International EURASIP Workshop on RFID Technology (EURFID)","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133784681","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
