Vrettos","doi":"10.1061/9780784481899.008","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1061/9780784481899.008","url":null,"abstract":"Within the frame of the major national research project ROBEX dealing with the robotic exploration of extreme environments, dynamic penetration tests combined with seismic tests have been conducted at an altitude of over 2,600 meters on Mt. Etna. Focus was placed on the assessment of the near-surface soil properties. A light dynamic sounding penetrometer with variable impact energy has been employed. Parallel to this, seismic data generated by a surface impact source were collected with geophones mounted on embedded spikes of different lengths. In addition to the performed in situ tests, samples of the volcanic soil were collected for classification and shear strength testing in the laboratory. The paper describes the experimental set-up and the deduced soil properties from the two types of in situ test. The results show the limits of available empirical relationships derived for routine geotechnical applications. The project implemented a number of key technologies to achieve this aim; a drilling control loop based on ultrasonic power feedback, a bayonet interface system to allow a drillstring to be built up in-situ then disassembled after use, a coring design which captured the cores drilled out, and a mechanism for caching the core samples in sealable containers. The system was demonstrated in the laboratory with results indicating low power, low weight on bit, achievement of the targeted depth, and the retrieval of still-frozen core samples. The routines to allow the system to become fully autonomous were also demonstrated. The drill was deployed to Coal Nunatak on Alexander Island, Antarctica, for analogue trials. The drill was demonstrated to work, as was the caching and drill assembly/disassembly system, but the target depth was not achieved. A review of drill depth is provided along with a laboratory solution to the problems encountered in the field.
