This microphone array is used in robot audition. Because the microphone array has many microphones, it has tolerance for not only environmental noise but also noise caused by the robot. Moreover, it can localize and separate sound sources in all directions. Sound localization by the microphone array is achieved by a delay-and-sum beamforming algorithm. A dedicated IEEE 1394 32-channel analog-to-digital (A/D) board with microphone amplifier was developed for the microphone array in order to keep a fixed cycle such as a sampling rate of 11 kHz. Sound localization is evaluated by a sound pressure distribution map. A sound localization experiment was conducted with the microphone array mounted on a Nomad mobile robot. One discontinuous sound source, such as music, can be localized accurately. The error margin of sound localization is within about 3/spl deg/. In the future, we will place our microphone array on humanoid robots to confirm system performance in human environment.","PeriodicalId":20476,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of IEEE Sensors, 2004.","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79994685","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A nanoporous thin film consisting of polyelectrolytes and sheet particulate /spl alpha/-ZrP was assembled by a layer-by-layer self assembly method on the electrode of a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM). This QCM sensor showed an eight times higher sensitivity than that of QCM deposited with /spl alpha/-ZrP by a casting method in low relative humidity. This means that the polyelectrolytes worked not only as a stabilizer to form a porous structure, but also as a material to keep moisture. Consequently, we considered that the gas sensitivity of the thin film is increased for other hydrophilic gases.","PeriodicalId":20476,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of IEEE Sensors, 2004.","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"90490818","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, selectivity remains one of the main problems for many applications. We report a new kind of mesoporous ceramic filter with nanoscale pores. The ceramic filter offers mechanical protection and can help to boost selectivity enormously through selective gas absorption. The developed nano-technological filters are based on mesoporous secondary and ternary silicon nitride derivatives with a defined particle size and are prepared via a new sol gel route. The interaction of the filters with CO, NO/sub 2/, H/sub 2/ and propane were evaluated using broadband sensors. Highly selective absorption was observed for different gases, especially NO/sub 2/. From these experiments a filter efficiency value is calculated, which allows easy selection of suitable filter materials for different applications.","PeriodicalId":20476,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of IEEE Sensors, 2004.","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-10-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74210774","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Most of the previous algorithms require a knowledge of the attitude or of the body vector measurements. For a fast spinning object, however, the body vector measurement is a difficult task due to flows of the object image. To overcome this difficulty, we search for the angular velocity which minimizes the cost function defined by the Euclidean distance differences of the observed star traces and the derivative star traces of an estimated angular velocity. With this formulation, angular velocity determination becomes a kind of minimization problem in 3D of the angular velocity vector. To reduce the search dimensions and use search techniques in 1D, we randomly sample points on the star traces and these random points assign a constraint to the possible angular velocity vector according to the kinematics equation. A numerical simulation for fast spinning cases is carried out to establish the results.","PeriodicalId":20476,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of IEEE Sensors, 2004.","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-10-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86622114","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The array consists of three tin-oxide-coated microhotplates with integrated MOS-transistor heaters and specifically designed circuitry. The programmable digital temperature controllers enable individual regulation of the microhotplate temperatures in continuous or dynamic mode. Nanocrystalline tin-oxide thick films with different Pd dopings (undoped, 0.2 wt% and 3 wt%) were tested. Excellent discrimination between the three gases was achieved with detection limits of less than 1 ppm for CO, 100 ppm for CH/sub 4/ (40% RH) and 10 ppb of NO/sub 2/ (30%/70% RH).","PeriodicalId":20476,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of IEEE Sensors, 2004.","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-10-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80474935","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The basic principle relies on the differential thermal behavior regarding both active arms of a micro Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI). Based on modeling results, an experimental sensor is realised as an integrated device made up of SU-8 polymer mounted on a standard silicon wafer. When subjected to a radiant source, such as laser light (980 nm), injected across the cleaved input face of the MZI, the significant change of output signal allows us to consider a new approach to measuring radiant heat flow rate. Experimental results are given regarding the obtained phase shift against the subjected thermal power. According to the modeling results, one can expect new highly sensitive devices to be developed in the next coming years, with numerous prospective industrial applications.","PeriodicalId":20476,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of IEEE Sensors, 2004.","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-10-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87409363","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The device responds to an external angular rate by a torsional motion around its sensitive axis due to the Coriolis effect. The shear strain in the upper torsional stem, which is proportional to the angular rate, is detected via a piezo-resistive read-out structure. Due to a change in resistivity at the strain sensitive elements, an electronic signal is generated. The change in voltage, however, does not solely derive from the torsional strain induced by the response of the device to the angular rate. In addition, there are unwanted contributions from the drive motion, e.g., from mechanical imbalance and from asymmetries of the piezoelectric excitation induced by fabrication tolerances. These effects disturb the sensor signal with varying contributions in amplitude and phase. They are identified and compared to results of FEM simulations. Suggestions for an optimized read-out structure are presented.","PeriodicalId":20476,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of IEEE Sensors, 2004.","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-10-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77465415","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Secondary echoes cause a complex interference pattern. Only the ToF of the first echo is of interest. Conventional matched filtering (MF) cannot cope with overlapping echoes. An explicit model for overlapping echoes leads to a generalized MF consisting of a parallel bank of filters rather than just a single filter. The proposed sensor consists of a UV laser diode, an optical fibre probe for simultaneous excitation and collection of the fluorescence and a USB powered palm-size spectrometer connected to a laptop. The sensor was applied on a set of oil samples, taken from production engines by a leading car manufacturing company, at various mileages. The subtle variations in the spectra, caused by the ageing process of the oil, are resolved using two methods: principle component analysis (PCA) and artificial neural networks (ANN). Their performance is compared with regard to utilization in a portable dedicated system for continuous in-situ monitoring. Because of the \"fingerprinting\" approach, which avoids detailed interpretation, the sensor has a wide range of application areas.","PeriodicalId":20476,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of IEEE Sensors, 2004.","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81137960","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
