The difference between online and face-to-face learning has invited some perceptions and obstacles to the implementation. Thus, this study aimed to describe the parents’ perception on the benefits and challenges towards the distance learning during the pandemic at school in Aceh, Indonesia. This study took a case in one junior high school in Banda Aceh, Aceh, Indonesia. There were 25 parents taken purposively as the sample. The study used questionnaire and interview to collect the data. The questionnaire and interview guide consisted of 10 questions posted on Google Form. The results found that the implementation of distance learning has led to the benefits and challenges. A number of challenges faced by parents when assisting their children with distance learning included lack of access to technology. Furthermore, parents had lack of knowledge or skills to assist their children with their homework, especially if the subject matter was unfamiliar. The last challenge was time constraints among the parents, making it difficult to find the time to support their children's distance learning. On the other hand, the Covid-19 pandemic has also brought significant gains toward education. The benefits were to minimize the children to be infected by the Covid-19, to engage relationship between the kids and parents, and to encourage parents to use their creativity and digital literacy in implementing the learning material.","PeriodicalId":204215,"journal":{"name":"ACCENTIA: Journal of English Language and Education","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116762177","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study was conducted to investigate the experiences of two Indonesian students taking a Master’s degree at the University of Adelaide, in constructing academic writing. Interview, to give an ethnographic perspective, was used in this study and the participants were asked with seven open-ended questions. The findings showed that, the students identified second language difficulties with regard to writing in general (grammatical and orthographic category), and difficulties with understanding the readings, and translating that into critical analysis to support argumentation. English as a foreign language (EFL) educational background was another issue to appear during the interview in relation to their obscurities in constructing the writing academically. Peer review, furthermore, also played a significant role to help them produce a better writing through proofreading.","PeriodicalId":204215,"journal":{"name":"ACCENTIA: Journal of English Language and Education","volume":"3 3","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132237111","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of the EFL learners was from stage 2 and the other was from stage four. Therefore, both learners had different periods in learning English, and also grammatical knowledge of English. The learner in stage 2 has studied English for three terms and the learner in stage 4 has learnt English for two terms. The study was conducted using mixed-method approach. The results of the study showed that writing competence highly relied on the learners’ grammatical structure knowledge in order to express a clear message in writing. The learner of stage 4 was more capable of expressing his message in his writing because of his better ability to use grammatical knowledge in his sentences. The study concludes that the better English grammatical knowledge the learners have, the better expressions can be written by them.","PeriodicalId":204215,"journal":{"name":"ACCENTIA: Journal of English Language and Education","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121272598","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The SQ6R method was offered as the appropriate method to solve the problem in this school. It is aimed at assisting students to get reading information and its meaning. This research utilized quantitative method, i.e. experimental research to find the answer as to whether the SQ6R method could increase students' reading comprehension. The sample of this study was 30 students, equally distributed in both experimental group (class IX3) and control group (class IX2), of a junior high school in Central Aceh, Indonesia. The data of the study was gathered by conducting two tests (pre and post with the treatment in between) which was further analyzed by using t-test. The results indicated that although both classes increased their scores in the post-test, the scores of experimental class who experienced the SQ6R method in their learning increased significantly (39 – 84) and outperformed those in the control class (33 – 63). Furthermore, the result of t-test was found to be 13.53 which was higher than t-table of 1.4 at a significance level of 0.05. This signified that the hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and the hypothesis (H0) was rejected. Thus, SQ6R method could increase the students’ reading comprehension. Based on the results, the teachers are recommended to apply this method in their teaching and learning process.","PeriodicalId":204215,"journal":{"name":"ACCENTIA: Journal of English Language and Education","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121696564","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
