In particular, such sources are necessary to test radiation detectors and materials. This study was concerned with the determination of photon and neutron fluxes generated by the interaction of a 6 MeV linear electron accelerator driven photon beam with a beryllium photoneutron converter. The double step procedure of an (e,γ) reaction followed by an (γ,n) emission results in a mixed radiation environment. The optimal converter geometry was determined by comparison of the computed neutron fluxes for each converter position. Computational results have shown that photon fluxes up to 10<sup>11</sup> photons/cm<sup>2</sup>/s and neutron fluxes up to 10<sup>7</sup> neutrons/cm<sup>2</sup>/s are achievable with the optimal setup. This paper is focused on the results of the MCNPX modeling and experiments and discussion of the converter orientation which leads to the largest radiation fluxes.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":20407,"journal":{"name":"Physics Procedia","volume":"90 ","pages":"Pages 164-169"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/j.phpro.2017.09.054","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85829750","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such systems use pulsed linac or betatron x-ray generators and produce alternate bremsstrahlung pulses with lower- and higher- end-point energies. Consequently, these systems provide about 50<!--> <!-->mm lower penetration than a system operated in a non-interlaced mode, have a limited range of cargo areal densities with valid MD, and cannot perform MD of objects smaller than the pulse separation. Also, the limited pulse repetition rate of x-ray generators in interlaced mode limits the radiographic image quality at nominal commercial speeds of vehicles or trains.</p><p>Several new methods of cargo inspection with MD were recently introduced to address the above-mentioned limitations: dual-energy methods based on Scintillation-Cherenkov detectors <span>[1]</span>; multi-energy method based on intrapulse time-varying of spectral content of x-ray <span>[1]</span>, <span>[2]</span>; multi-energy method utilized ramping-up energy packet of short x-ray pulses <span>[3]</span>, <span>[4]</span>; and methods based on multi-energy betatron <span>[5]</span>, <span>[6]</span>. The current setup provides a thermal neutron flux of 1.08×10<sup>6</sup> cm<sup>-2</sup>sec<sup>-1</sup> at the exposure position. In general, the sample was fixed on a plate at the top of rotary stage controlled by Labview 2009 Version 9.0.1. The incremental step can be adjusted from 0.45 to 7.2 degree. A 16 bit CCD camera assembled with a Nikkor 50<!--> <!-->mm f/1.2 lens was used to record light from <sup>6</sup>LiF/ZnS (green) neutron converter screen. The exposure time for each shot was 60<!--> <!-->seconds, resulting in the acquisition time of approximately three hours for completely turning the sample around. Afterwards, the batch of two dimensional neutron images of the sample was read into the reconstruction and visualization software Octopus reconstruction 8.8 and Octopus visualization 2.0, respectively. The results revealed that the system alignment is important. Maintaining the stability of heavy sample at every particular angle of rotation is important. Previous alignment showed instability of the supporting plane while tilting the sample. This study showed that the sample stage should be replaced. Even though the NT is a lengthy process and involves large data processing, it offers an opportunity to better understand features of an object in more details than with neutron radiography. The digital NT also allows us to separate inner features that appear superpositioned in radiography by cross-sectioning the 3D data set of an object without destruction. As a result, NT is a significant tool for revealing hidden information included in the inner structure of cultural heritage objects, providing great benefits in archaeological study, conservation process and authenticity investigating.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":20407,"journal":{"name":"Physics Procedia","volume":"88 ","pages":"Pages 123-127"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/j.phpro.2017.06.016","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83083282","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Sensitivity coefficients to convert this decrease to temperature were derived, and two-dimensional distributions of the decreasing rates, being proportional to the temperature distribution, were obtained. Carbon fibres act as stress redistributors while having increased electrical and thermal conductivities. These properties could also be utilized in metal matrixes, if the fibres are properly fused to the metal and the structure remains intact. Another recently developed high potential carbon structure, carbon nanotube- (CNT) yarns, has similar but even greater mechanical properties than common carbon fibres. Via laser cladding, these reinforcing materials could be used in a plethora of applications, either locally (or globally) as surface treatments or as structural reinforcements using multi-layer laser cladding (additive manufacturing). The challenges of embedding carbon fibres or CNT-yarns in a CuAl mixture and SnPb solder wire using lasers are here investigated using high speed imaging and SEM. Sandwiches made of thin high-purity Al, Co, Au, and Bi metal foils were installed in different positions across the whole spallation target. The gamma-ray activity of products of (n,xn) and other studied reactions was measured offline with germanium semiconductor detectors. Reaction yields of radionuclides with half-life exceeding 100<!--> <!-->min and with effective neutron energy thresholds between 3.6 MeV and 186 MeV provided us with information about the spectrum of spallation neutrons in this energy region and beyond. The experimental neutron flux was determined using the measured reaction yields and cross-sections calculated with the TALYS 1.8 nuclear reaction program and INCL4-ABLA event generator of MCNP6. Neutron spectra in the region of activation sandwiches were also modeled with the radiation transport code MCNPX 2.7. Neutron flux based on excitation functions from TALYS provides a reasonable description of the neutron spectrum inside the spallation target and is in good agreement with Monte-Carlo predictions. The experimental flux that uses INCL4 cross-sections rather underestimates the modeled spectrum in the whole region of interest, but the agreement within few standard deviations was reached as well. The paper summarizes basic principles of the method for determining the spectrum of high-energy neutrons without employing the spectral adjustment routines and points out to the need for model improvements and precise cross-section measurements.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":20407,"journal":{"name":"Physics Procedia","volume":"90 ","pages":"Pages 69-78"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/j.phpro.2017.09.021","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80814571","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
