Two case studies from medieval Serbia are examined to demonstrate the peculiarities of the relationship between female rulers and bishops, as well as of the different forms and aspects of female patronage of monasticism, like founding and donating to monasteries or commissioning liturgical books. One of the most important questions concerns the motivation of women for patronizing monks. It is suggested that there was some interplay in cooperation between female patrons and monks. The question is posed whether prayers, commemoration, spiritual guidance and even the composing of a vita (i.e. contributing to the veneration of a new saint) may be understood as a form of compensation on the part of the monks towards female patrons.","PeriodicalId":203993,"journal":{"name":"Endowment Studies","volume":"47-48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-07-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114809631","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The land was subsequently seized by the Ottoman state and the remaining structure was converted into the imperial mosque of Galata Yeni Cāmiʿ by the reigning sultan’s mother. This study examines the history and shared functions of these two places of worship through the mosque’s endowment deed (vaḳfiye) and additional Ottoman and European contemporary sources. Moreover, local and regional historical contextualisation provides an insight into how both European-Ottoman political relations and internal socioreligious tendencies influenced Ottoman policy towards Galata’s most prominent Latin Catholic church during the late seventeenth century.","PeriodicalId":203993,"journal":{"name":"Endowment Studies","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124293080","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These problems largely arose as a result of colonial powers directly or indirectly imposing legal “reforms” on Islamic endowments. Attempts to restore their systems as well as impediments to the process of restoration in these countries are also identified.","PeriodicalId":203993,"journal":{"name":"Endowment Studies","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123626583","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper aims to reconstruct the communities’ role as administrators for those foundations whose capital was invested in immovable property. The focus lies on threeStiftungshäuserand on nine mortgage-backed buildings located in today’s first and second district of Vienna. The history of these buildings – from the purchase to the benefactors’ death, and from the establishment of the foundations to the buildings’ sale – will be reconstructed by taking into account Vienna’s urban development and housing situation in the 19th-century. Furthermore, the benefactors’ identities as homeowners and their relationship to the buildings and their residents will be examined.","PeriodicalId":203993,"journal":{"name":"Endowment Studies","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132336244","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An Initial Critical Presentation and Assessment of the Phenomenon","authors":"Ikaros Mantouvalos","doi":"10.1163/24685968-00201001","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1163/24685968-00201001","url":null,"abstract":"In the organization, operation and growth of Greek communities and companies in the Hungarian hinterlands during the 18th and 19th century, a special place was held by the philanthropy of the expatriates who chose Hungary as their new homeland. These activities were expressed through legacies, bequests and charitable works in the host society and country of origin alike. The aim of this paper is not to deal with this topic as a whole, but rather to identify a number of issues associated with the personal philanthropy of the Görögök in Central Europe, a subject that still preoccupies historians who describe the phenomenon of beneficence. Among their concerns are: since the practice of bequests was widespread in all the newcomers’ social strata, what were the aims and uses of legacies and donations in the various periods, and how was the practice of philanthropy expressed in the adopted country as well as in their homeland? Also, to what degree does this benevolence reflect the internal discord and antagonisms between the members of a community, as well as the migrant subject’s entrance into the different religious and social environment of the Hapsburg Empire, and their eventual incorporation and/or assimilation into the national body of Hungary?","PeriodicalId":203993,"journal":{"name":"Endowment Studies","volume":"1133 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123347111","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
