The pronounced decrease in the peak current and the negative shift in the formal potential of CV at the gel-modified electrode, as compared with the normal GC electrode, was observed in the micelle-solution; this indicates that the diffusive FPEG molecules which form the micelle hardly penetrate into the NIPA gel. This result suggests that there exists an interaction between FPEG molecules and the NIPA gel in the vicinity of the surface of the NIPA gel in the micelle-solution. However, this also indicates that a small amount of FPEG molecules which can form micelles exist in the NIPA gel.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":20331,"journal":{"name":"Polymer Gels and Networks","volume":"5 4","pages":"Pages 369-383"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/S0966-7822(97)00007-5","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77233534","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The existence of three types of ice were suggested by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements for every frozen hydrogel. In the frozen hydrogels the states of water, except unfrozen water, were ice of free water and disordered ice crystals. The mobility and activation energy for motion of water molecules in unfrozen hydrogels were investigated by using pulsed nuclear magnetic resonance (PNMR) measurements. It was concluded that there are two states of water in the unfrozen hydrogel, i.e. unfrozen water and disordered water which is mainly formed in narrow apertures in the hydrogel. The discrepancy between the DSC and PNMR measurements was explained by a structural transformation during cooling.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":20331,"journal":{"name":"Polymer Gels and Networks","volume":"5 5","pages":"Pages 455-468"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/S0966-7822(97)00016-6","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81075199","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An X-ray diffraction study of the gel film revealed that the SA side chains in the gel film SA/AA/MBAA:24.7/74.3/1.0 (in mol) were spontaneously oriented perpendicular to the film surface in order to minimize the interfacial free energy between the gel film surface and air. The one-dimensional swelling ratio perpendicular to the gel film surface in an ethanol/water mixture was greater than that in the direction parallel to the film surface. Commercial linear samples of similar M<sub>n</sub> and various M<sub>w</sub> have been examined, together with samples crosslinked by electron beam irradiation. Apart from the linear sample of lowest M<sub>w</sub>, all the free induction decays (FIDs) are very similar and this is attributed to the presence of free chain ends. The magnitude of this problem is illustrated by generating theoretical FIDs from networks of different crosslink density and reptating linear chains of different entanglement spacings, with and without free chain ends. A new result for the FID using the reptation spectrum is presented and used to fit data from the linear polyethylenes. This yields an “NMR average” molar mass, similar to the accepted value and provides information on a sample's polydispersity. Three-arm polyethylene star polymers, of low polydispersity and various arm lengths, have also been studied. The large variation in the chain dynamics from the core to the free end of the star arm is not reflected in the FIDs, which can all be well-fitted by double exponentials. This highlights the importance of specific isotopic labelling in studying such systems.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":20331,"journal":{"name":"Polymer Gels and Networks","volume":"5 3","pages":"Pages 285-305"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/S0966-7822(97)00004-X","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78855852","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Relatively sharp decreases in force at break, elastic modulus and water vapor barrier properties, and increases in deformation at break were observed at temperature-dependent relative humidities; this relative humidity was reduced by increasing the temperature.
