According to UNESCO, nearly 90% of the world’s student population has had their learning experiences disrupted by precautions and policies implemented to overcome the spread of the disease. The project “Home, but not alone: Home, but not alone: Empowering preschool teachers and parents for digital education”, a European funded project focused on the exchange of good practices to improve preschool education throughout Europe, will mitigate educational losses by supporting teachers and parents who are the main providers of education for young children. This work describes the actions made to analyse the influence of the pandemic on children and preschools.","PeriodicalId":202540,"journal":{"name":"2022 International Symposium on Computers in Education (SIIE)","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115472898","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Programming is regarded as a difficult subject to learn, and as the size of classes and the number of students enrolled in online courses continues to increase, providing individualized support to determine where the difficulties of a student lie may appear impossible, resulting in frustration, lack of motivation, and an increase in dropout rates. Chatbots can mitigate this problem as it can provide simultaneous support to multiple students 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and by allowing introverted students to express questions more comfortably. This paper proposes the implementation of a chatbot denominated Pyo aiming to provide assistance to novice programmers. It was evaluated how students enrolled in an online introductory programming course interacted with Pyo in order to draw conclusions about the effectiveness of the chatbot’s features. The results indicate that Pyo facilitates student learning; however, more straightforward explanations of its functionalities were requested.","PeriodicalId":202540,"journal":{"name":"2022 International Symposium on Computers in Education (SIIE)","volume":"195 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114252878","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this context, an important advance is the increase in the different possibilities of the teaching-learning process provided by Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs). ICTs integrated with the Project Based Learning (PBL) methodology allow students to develop their potential to solve real-world problems while increasing their learning capacity. This paper presents two PBL methodologies to be performed in higher education, using open-source Quantum Geographic Information System (QGIS) software as an ICT tool. Each PBL methodology presents its potential use as geoinformation technology for forest management and energy resource assessment, respectively. The PBL methodologies allowed the students to acquire knowledge in the use of one of the most demanded software in geomatics applications. The results showed a high quality of the delivered exercises, and a good personal evaluation of the proposed methodologies and a high qualification by the students.","PeriodicalId":202540,"journal":{"name":"2022 International Symposium on Computers in Education (SIIE)","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127511274","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Our exploratory study aims to understand if the C-Pen Exam Reader (C-Pen) helps in the learning process of students with language and writing difficulties. The methodology chosen was interviews with elementary school teachers, no special education teachers, and a speech therapist, as well as the support of CRTICee of the Amato Lusitano School Grouping. Thus, it was possible to assess the added value for students, not only in terms of their autonomy, since it is a reading pen, but also their self-esteem and inclusion in the school environment. It was also possible to clarify which points to improve in the use of this instrument to maximize its effectiveness and, thus, improve the quality of life of these students, such as prosody (accentuation, intonation, duration, rhythm of words and phrases).","PeriodicalId":202540,"journal":{"name":"2022 International Symposium on Computers in Education (SIIE)","volume":"52 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124609420","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
