In this study, the impacts of tourist trampling and topography on soil characteristics (texture, structure, bulk density, particle density, soil pH, electrical conductivity, organic matter, and microbial respiration) were investigated in three trails located in Sefid-Cheshmeh (Golestan Province, Iran) each with different tourist visitation frequencies; low, medium, and high frequency as well as an undisturbed area serving as the control. A suite of soil physical and biochemical parameters was measured at 20 randomized points along each trail and data was analyzed using a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Duncan’s test. The results indicated a notable effect of visitors’ trampling on some soil physical (soil structure, bulk density) and chemical features (soil organic carbon). It was found that trampling as well as topographic factors (elevation, slope and aspect) are associated with soil quality characteristics, especially on soil EC and respiration. However, soil texture was the same in all trails, and particle density mainly contributed to soil organic carbon content. The results of this study can contribute to soil preservation and restoration by identifying damaged or fragile areas, protecting natural and aesthetic aspects of the soil along walking and hiking trails, and associating with carrying capacity investigations to put limitations on the number of visitors. Thus, such studies can be helpful in the training of human resources for such efforts.","PeriodicalId":20155,"journal":{"name":"Plant, Soil and Environment","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":2.4,"publicationDate":"2023-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75906303","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the current research, effect of tillage practices on the soil characteristics, different wheat genotypes and their attributes along with farmer economics were studied. The field trial was conducted at a farmers field with randomized complete block design with split plot sequence having genotypes in the main plots while tillage operation in the sub – plots. Three wheat genotypes including two improved varieties i.e. Pirsabak – 15 and Fateh Jhang and a single landrace were sown. Tillage operations included deep plough, conventional tillage, mulch tillage and zero – tillage. The results showed that soil tillage significantly influenced the physico – chemical characteristics of soils. The interaction between genotype and tillage also exhibited significant effect except for soil pH and total soil nitrogen. The agronomic parameters showed significant effect of both varities, tillage practices and their interaction except for total biomass. The grain protein content showed significantly higher total protein (13.61%) in the landrace as compared with the improved varieties. The BCR calculated at the harvest of the experiment showed that 3.86 for the local landrace with deep plough and the least was observed 2.96 in the improved variety (Fateh Jhang) on zero tillage plots. It may be concluded from the results that improved variety (Pirsabak) gave better result in term of yield. Landrace also showed a good response to tillage.","PeriodicalId":20155,"journal":{"name":"Plant, Soil and Environment","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":2.4,"publicationDate":"2023-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85244604","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The research evaluated the potential effects, through modeling, of E. coca cultivation on physicochemical indicators and soil quality indices (SQI) in the Aguaytia valley, Padre Abad province, Ucayali region, Peru. Areas with E. coca cultivation of 2 (CO2) and 15 years (CO15), ex-coca with natural regeneration of 9 years (EC9), and secondary forest (BS) were evaluated as reference; evaluating soil physical and chemical indicators. The results show differences in all the soil indicators evaluated, except K+. The principal component analysis determined that the indicators clay, sand, silt, MO, N, Ca2+ and SAl were relevant and explained 82.97% of the total variance. In addition, the modeling shows that 15-year-old E. coca has a negative impact on sand, clay and Ca2+, and a positive impact on silt and SAl, but no statistically significant impact on OM and N. The soils presented low quality for BS and very low quality for CO15. In conclusion, the modeling and the ICS show that the cultivation of Erythroxylum coca under monoculture has a significant negative impact on Ca2+ and positive impact on Al3+, %AC, %SAl, % of silt, which caused a loss in soil quality, in addition, recovery is observed in the area of excoca with 09 years of natural regeneration.","PeriodicalId":20155,"journal":{"name":"Plant, Soil and Environment","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":2.4,"publicationDate":"2023-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81721735","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Spent engine oil (SEO) was added to the buckets filled with 15 kg of loamy soil at different volumes of 0 , 75 , 225, and 375mL. Another bucket was filled with 15 kg of industrial effluent (IE). The results showed that SEO in soil has highly significant (p ≤ 0.05) effects on some of the soil's physicochemical properties. Industrial effluent (IE) had the highest nitrogen content (0.89%) while the lowest was in 75 mL15kg-1 (0.72%). pH was higher in control (4.29) and the lowest was at 375 mL15kg-1 (4.89). The chlorophyll content range was 274.06 mg g-1 (IE) – 349.60 mg g-1 (control). Also, bulbils from IE had the least fresh and dry weight (20.21 g and 14.73 g, respectively). The bioaccumulation factor (BAF) of all heavy metals examined was less than 1, except for copper. Heavy metal uptake order by the bulbil is Cu > Fe > Zn > Pb. Considering the detrimental effects of SEO and IE pollution on soil and plants, it has become necessary for the government to have a policy that will prevent indiscriminate disposal of waste.","PeriodicalId":20155,"journal":{"name":"Plant, Soil and Environment","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":2.4,"publicationDate":"2023-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"90162783","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

(2023): Water and nutrient use efficiencies of Stipa purpurea Griseb. along a precipitation gradient of the Tibetan Plateau. Plant Soil Environ., 69: 230–237. Abstract: Water and nutrient use efficiencies are important adaptive features of plants in arid and semi-arid environments. In this study, water, nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) use efficiencies of Stipa purpurea Griesb., an endemic and dominant grass species, were investigated in the alpine steppe along precipitation gradients on the Tibetan Plateau. The leaf N content of S. purpurea increased along the precipitation gradient, but leaf P decreased, whereas carbon (C) remained unchanged. Leaf δ 13 C (water use efficiency, WUE) and C : N ratio (N use efficiency, NUE) decreased with increasing precipitation. But leaf C : P (P use efficiency, PUE) and N : P ratios increased with increasing precipitation. A trade-off was found between WUE and PUE but not between WUE and NUE. The changes in leaf traits were associated with changes in soil water, organic C, total N and P. These findings offer insights into understanding alpine plant water and nutrient use strategies along a precipitation gradient, as well as facilitate the prediction of alpine ecosystem responses to precipitation changes.","PeriodicalId":20155,"journal":{"name":"Plant, Soil and Environment","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":2.4,"publicationDate":"2023-05-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48178699","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
