In particular, the composite extensional tectonism in the Maures Massif (e.g. the Grimaud Fault) and Sardinia (e.g. the Posada-Asinara Line) consists of two shearing events: a ductile event in the amphibolite facies and and a following ductile (greenschist facies)/brittle and brittle event. During the latter event, syn-tectonic magmatism took place. The correlation of the pre-Alpine successions of the Northern Apennines with ones of the Central and NE Sardinia suggests a possible continuation of the Posada Valley Zone and the Posada-Asinara Line within the Tuscan segment of the Variscan belt. Also on the basis of paleogeographic data, we suggest that, during the Carboniferous-Permian times, the Maures Massif, Corsica-Sardinia block and the Tuscan part of Adria (Northern Apennines) were likely adjacent in the southern part of the Variscan Belt. Water samples collected randomly from fifty-nine tubewells/dug-wells were analysed chemically in the National Institute of Health, Islamabad (Pakistan). Chemical quality data thus obtained have been verified statistically for its reliability and conformity in terms of chemical identity among aquifers. This data is then projected graphically on the Trilinear Piper and Stiff Pattern diagrams by using USGS software \"HC-GRAM\". The Stiff Pattern diagrams thus developed for each well are projected on the map of Islamabad to visualize the distribution of groundwater chemistry. \"WATEQ\", USGS Water Equilibrium software, is used to evaluate the variety of chemical parameters to be used for further extending this study. Results indicate that most of the Islamabad aquifers are of excellent quality and fall in the category of HCO3-type, Ca-HCO3 type, Na-HCO3 type, and Na-type. Groundwater available at Dhok Mori, Dhok Chapran and in some sites of Sectors I-8 and I-9/4 are highly contaminated. http://virtualexplorer.com.au/article/2006/153/groundwater-contamination-of-islamabad-aquifers Citation: Shah, Z., Ahmed, Z. 2006. This has lead to a surge in the numbers of investigations using electron backscatter diffraction analyses. Electron backscatter diffraction allows the systematic measurement of the full crystallographic orientation of grains as small as sub-micron in size in rockforming minerals as well as other crystalline materials such as metals and ceramics. Performance of electron backscatter diffraction requires samples to be specially prepared and correctly orientated to suit the aims of the research, such as understanding the deformation kinematics of the sample. This paper aims to outline the methodology necessary to go from orientated hand specimen or experimental laboratory sample through to collection of electron backscatter diffraction data. Practical information often omitted from EBSD publications will be presented such as detailed descriptions of sample preparation and discussion about how to achieve good quality results. Guidelines are restricted mainly to the use of Oxford Instruments HKL Channel 5 software and do not cover other analysis hardware and software. However, parts of the paper such as sample preparation and orientation guidelines will be useful to anyone performing EBSD analysis. Citation: 2010.
