Personal observations, documented observations, and discoveries in the literature all provided an incentive for this investigation. Some systematic observations revealed that academic staff in Nigerian universities are subjected to some unfavourable workplace conditions, even though they are expected to perform well in teaching, publish quality research papers that can contribute to global knowledge and development, and engage in community development services. Major theories have attempted to explain employee productivity in the workplace. Using secondary data, this article explores the Two Factor model by Fredrick Herzberg, the Contingency theory of leadership and the Expectancy theory by Victor Vroom. They were most relevant in associating motivating factors with the work performance of employees in the organisation. The criticisms of each theory have paved the way for theoretical triangulation and, thus, a synthesis of all three theories to explain the work performance of academic staff members in Nigerian universities. The article resolved that incentives are indeed essential in order to increase the performance of academic staff in Nigerian universities.","PeriodicalId":200024,"journal":{"name":"Przegląd Krytyczny","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135398968","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This reflective case study at a highly international European university finds five areas wherein internationalization has shaped teaching and learning during the pandemic, and which are undertheorized in existing models: mobility and basic needs, instructional modalities, vulnerability, language, and university alliances. Accounting for these areas enables better analysis of pandemic experiences, and when combined with CoI and Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles, can foster more inclusive and effective learning experiences for students and faculty.","PeriodicalId":200024,"journal":{"name":"Przegląd Krytyczny","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128060042","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The COVID-19 pandemic has been a major driver of this trend recently. Although there has been extensive research on online teaching and learning in general, very few studies focus on how this needs to be done specifically in social science research methods (SSRM). This literature review summarizes the most current research evidence on SSRM teaching in an online setting. Such information can facilitate setting up future online teaching and learning activities regarding social science research methods. In addition, the article discusses how this knowledge can be transferred to a practical SSRM online teaching and learning tool (a toolbox in the Navigating Social Worlds project).","PeriodicalId":200024,"journal":{"name":"Przegląd Krytyczny","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124394505","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The changes in the regulations concerned the organization of universities and ensuring the sustainable development of academic centers across the country, which influenced the model of university management after 2018. The analysis begins with a historical background that shows how higher education has been changing after the political transformation of the 1989, and proceeds with a discussion about the conditions in which remote learning emerged. On the one hand, these conditions relate to the existing programmes that e-learning offers – the tools. On the other hand, they refer to the level of digital preparedness – the skills. The article is meant to be descriptive and combines didactic (both institutional and student-related) and administrative perspective of responding to COVID-19. As campuses around the globe were forced to shut down, online distance learning became an everyday reality for all students. At the same time, faculty were rushed to adjust their teaching content and methods, as well as forms of assessment, to online teaching. As a result, this transition exposed flaws in technological abilities, digital preparedness and flexibilities within universities. In this work, my goal is to analyze how the Hungarian HEIs adopted online educational practices during the pandemic and how they were able to address some of the difficulties while adjusting their teaching and creating new forms of support for both students and faculty. To that end, the article first discusses the prevalence of distance and digital learning before the pandemic, then evaluates the steps and challenges of transition to remote online education during the pandemic, and finally highlights some lessons learnt and best practices of some Hungarian universities.","PeriodicalId":200024,"journal":{"name":"Przegląd Krytyczny","volume":"79 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125108117","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study (N=191) was conducted online and answered the following research questions: 1) Does the time spent online influence students experience with cyberbullying? 2) Are students from vulnerable groups more prone to cyberbullying? 3) What are the ways students believe cyberbullying should be addressed? 4) Are there gender differences in the way cyberbullying is perceived? Among others, the study revealed that women are more likely to acknowledge cyberbullying and that their professors are identified by a large part of the sample as perpetrators of cyberbullying.","PeriodicalId":200024,"journal":{"name":"Przegląd Krytyczny","volume":"94 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124175593","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While there is research suggesting that the impacts and “the troubling effects of the pandemic on research and higher education… might be felt for years to come” (The Lancet Editorial, 2020), there is also discernible pandemic fatigue, not only among the population, but researchers and subjects of research as well (Patel, Webster, Greenberg, Weston, & Brooks, 2020). Indeed, there has been an overabundance of published research articles in nearly all disciplines about the pandemic. The purpose of the current special issue is not to repetitively take stock of what happened during the pandemic but rather explore how the pandemic transformed the education system while rethinking certain practices and strategies engrained in the education system. To some extent, then, taking stock of what we know about the pandemic should help us prepare for the era some call the “new normal post-COVID-19 era” (Cahapay, 2020).","PeriodicalId":200024,"journal":{"name":"Przegląd Krytyczny","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127722199","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Apart from disrupting the ecosystem, their overwhelming effects are felt in the agricultural sector as farmlands are washed away. The media are expected to enlighten the residents of FCT, Abuja, about the impact of climate change. They have to be aware of global warming and its effects. Hence, this article sought to determine the level of awareness about the existence of climate change discourse among the residents of the FCT, Abuja; to ascertain respondents’ perception about the media creating enough awareness around climate change and how it exacerbates flooding, and to confirm if the press is mobilising residents enough on how to mitigate flooding. The study was anchored on Status Conferral and Media Development theories. A questionnaire and question guide served as instruments for data collection. Findings showed that the FCT residents’ awareness level about climate change was generally low, whereas improvement on the awareness level will result in activities that reduce flash floods; they perceived the media as not creating adequate awareness about climate change and educating the populace enough on how to mitigate the flash flood problem. In their sensitisation exercises, the media should partner with relevant government agencies and traditional rulers to educate residents on safety issues, particularly human activities that tend to exacerbate flash floods in the area.","PeriodicalId":200024,"journal":{"name":"Przegląd Krytyczny","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-08-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121669731","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
